I remember in VA straight when Ms. Byrd, birdlady,
(ironic how bird-like the woman was...like some kind of evil harpy) came out and read the group a bedtime story one night. It was The Velveteen Rabbit. If you don't know how the story goes, look it up if you want, I'm not up to recounting it here. So after she read it to us, she asks how this kids' story could relate to us having a drug problem. I remember drawing a complete blank. Thankfully, I wasn't called on to try to pull a rabbit out of my hat and start talking about how I thought this story is similar to my being a druggie and being subsequently 'saved' by straight
inc. There were a lot of tears shed during this one, if memory serves me. We were sitting on the tile floor in the big room. The lights may have been dimmed. Any other VA straightlings (barf) remember this?

Whatever the outcome of this madness you call Christian justice you can know this:
in my minds eye my thoughts light fires in your cities...

Spare the child and spoil the rod! I have not sold myself to God!

Eventually, these tiny radio transmitters will replace bar codes as a way of identifying products in the stores. IMMEDIATELY, the conspiracy theorists picked up on this and began talking about how the U.S. government will use RFIDs to spy on all of us all the time! Oh, no! Panic! Orwellian future! Thought crimes!

I have a problem with such theories, just as I do with the one about how the FBI has a "virus" that tracks all your keystrokes and monitors everything you do with your computer. The problem is DATA. Gathering such information creates vast quantities of DATA. No one can cull through that data fast enough to make it of any use to
anyone.

Our government just isn't that smart! It isn't with-it enough to successfully pull off any such scam. It can't deliver the mail. The FBI is missing boxes of guns. The IRS lost 5,000 computers. The INS lets known terrorists walk across the border. The CIA, FBI, and NSA don't share information. Could such an outfit successfully monitor all of us using zillions of RFIDs? I doubt it.

Open Free for All / Which Code is Worth Crunching?
« on: July 21, 2003, 11:06:00 PM »
Question for you programmers out there...in your collective estimation, what is the best place to start for someone who wants to learn some code that will get them EMPLOYED at a decent salary (or other form of income) in this day and age?
I know a little HTML and some DOS batch file commands. If you were me, where would you go from here? I've been told not to waste my time with web design by lots of people...that it's hard to find a job in this field. Right now I'm an A+ NET+ tech with a fair amount of experience. So what then? Visual Basic? Java?

Any input would be greatly appreciated...

I remember getting pulled out of group and "exercized" for falling asleep in group. There seemed to be an unusually high amount of tension and over-zealous straight fervor when I first came in. It was November of 1982, and the "Mayflower" group had just migrated north from St. Pete to VA. It seemed as if the group was in a "bad place" or something. I think it was a little unusual to pull someone out and exercize them for just nodding off in group. They made me do push-ups until I couldn't anymore. I remember Mike Mallone and Greg Dutton were in on it. When I started crying that I could do no more, Greg said something like, "You feel those feelings coming out that you've pushed down?" I was like, "Yes...YES" (telling them what they wanted to hear) I think Greg was in a way giving me an "out" by asking me this, otherwise the others may have kept trying to make me do more...

So does anyone remember those days after the group first came to VA? It seemed like there was just nothing but confrontation going on then. Is it just me, or is that true?

I wonder if there are survivors of Tranquility Bay. Perhaps there should be another Forum?

I'd rather see bad Americans replaced by Americans than see their jobs exported. Here
are some links to check up on this ugly situation:

A new, 1-inch round 1.5GB (yes, 1.5GB) hard drive may revolutionize the digital camera industry. Holding more memory than a flash memory card and smaller than existing hard drives, the teensy-weensy Cornice hard drive may soon find its way into cell phones, video cameras, MP3 players, and evil robots all over the planet.

"Chemically dependent for the rest of your life"
I had a real hard time with this. Finally, I let
them convince me that I was, or I just played along. I guess deep down I knew that it was a
bunch of crap. I don't know whether or not there were any 'heavy' reasons for my drug use, I think I just liked them...and enjoyed listening to music more than doing schoolwork.
I had let up for a while before I went in the program. School was just a drag, and I wanted to leave home if my parents were going to continue to interfere with my sex life. So I left home for a month, came back, and it was only a couple of weeks before I ended up in straight. (Now talk about interference!!)
I was not an addict. I was not even "becoming" one...Like I said, I wasn't drinking or smoking much of anything at that point. My parents just didn't know what to do about me, them being who they were, and straight was good at selling itself to them.
