I already wrote one to him personally, and I am glad I did, I wanted him to know how much he helped me and that I  am  forever gratefull to him and Shelly.

Art was human, He was not perfect, but he managed to make a difference for the positive in many of our lives and that's more then most of us can say.

            I am not wishing the Seed on Ginger, in fact I am glad she wasn't there, Why is she speaking for everyone that was, and Greg I wish you weren't there either,
I think your father  deserves credit for that. I speak for no one but myself, I was there and for me it worked, when I left, I really left. I made decisions that the Seed would not approved of. I made my own decisions, so much for brainwashing. Now looking back
and with 19 years of sobiety I have have gratitude for the role the Seed played in my younger life. I also can see some of the imperfections of the Seed , but I believe it had more to do with the times we were living in. People were just learning about the drug problem and they may have over reacted back them.

           Thanks for sharing old memories, since discoving this forum so many things came back to me, the good and the bad, but mostly the good. It seems there are a few people that just can't handle anything good  being said about the Seed.  I know your mother and your sister Ginger made sandwiches during a period when I was there and I want to thank them for there hard work.  As a whole group the Seed did have a special power it was a spiritual experiece for me, I had a chance to be a part of something positive which I never had in life before the Seed and people really mattered to me. I wish your sister could have been there to have experienced that love, but she wasn't. she will try to compare the Seed to many other places, but they were copycats. There was only one Seed and you had to be in it to have experienced it.  And for those that feel the Seed was abusive and a brain washing prison, well that's their perception and I won't dispute that, but I would blame them and their parents for puting them in there, in case they all forgot it was a drug rehab.
Thom,  I hope you will continue to post for those of us who enjoy what you have to say...

               I was in the Seed the same time as you on SR84
and I don't remember seeing John U all that much back   then. I was there march of 73 till 75 , I believe John was somewhere else during that time, He did show up every now and then.  I also agree with FtLauderdale, the blame is on your parents. Why on earth did they put you in the seed?, I quess you were an angel.
When I did deal with John U , He was pretty decent to me,  Once after the group came down on me for something petty John called me up to his office and asked me  what was wrong , he seemed to be very sensitive to my feelings. He listened to what I had to say, gave me a pat on the back and told me to go back to the group.

           I was in the Seed around 70 & 71 . I returned
73 to 75  Ft Lauderdale.   The Seed helped me set a foundation to work from. I nevered felt brain washed, I do believe there was a certain control the seed had on me or most of us while we were there, but  seeing that my life in my own hands wasn't working, I had to turn over some trust, and I am glad I did. I can look back over thirty years of being away from the Seed and Honestly say it was one of the best things that happen to me. I also feel a strong connection with people that went thru the program. I believe we were apart of something bigger then Art and the Seed itself, there was a spirituality from the group a connection with humanity a love and concern people around us, and also a chance at an early age to aquire some life time lessons.  I am sure we crossed paths back then. I also enjoy reading your posts and thanks to
you wonderful sister Ginger, we have this great forum to express our personal experiences.

             You were not in the Seed. Making sandwiches for the seed as a small child does not make you an ex -Seedling or a pro on the Seed. What are you talking about, so many people posting violent abuses and rapes, I only  read a couple of postings.  You are blowing thing way out of proportion.  Straight and the Seed were two different places, please don't blur them.
The only abuses I remember at the Seed was when someone was in the hot seat, some people sometimes became a little to cruel, and for people or did not want to be there (forced by their parents) well of coures they would feel abused. The Seed was like a bootcamp , it was a tough love program,  it worked for me.

John U.,
            I am grateful for this forum, For years I would think about the seed and wonderd how people were doing.  It is so great to have my memories refreshed by so many people.  The Seed  was not  an easy place but it helped wake me up, there was plenty of tough love, sometimes it could have been a little more gentle,
but the Seed help me pull my life together, and I remember you as being a really great person and I want to thank you and most of the staff that worked so hard to help many of us that really needed it.  I hope things are going well for you in life.  Thanks again for
being a person that helped make a difference in this world, you helped save lives.

           You  have a remarkable memory. Didn't Rick and Linda Get married at the seed?  Maureen was also a tough girl from NY, also had a major habit, she had auburn redish hair and bad teeth, but actually very good looking, she was bout 24 at the time, she was fighting to get her baby girl back and Art  helped get her baby back. She was wonderful, I really loved her. I rember Darlene and her younger brother from the early andrews ave days. I also remember the hot seat ( toilet cover)

           I remember the house on 3rd ave.  in 1970
Did Pam  have long blond hair ?  , she was very beautiful from what I remember. I was about 16  at that time as well time and they served free meals,  which attracted a lot of the young street hippies at that time
Do you rmember Maureen, she was like a staff member,  and Hap and Mavis, I remember a wedding there as well, it was very Billy Jack like, that was a great discription. People came and went as they pleased. No one tried to make me cut my hair , lots of  hugging and genuine caring, it was a very special time. There was a record player up front with several of rock  albums .  I  remember   Maureen  getiing down to "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain.  I remember telling my friends about this cool place called the seed.  Every time some one knew came in we really wanted to help them, I remember really caring about everybody back then.  My friend Tom W. turned me on to the seed back then and he was only 14 at the time, we both Just walked in, and we were greeted with open arms, and of course a free meal , we used t hitch hike to the meetings from hollywood and some of the time someone would ride us home.  [ This Message was edited by: rjfro22 on 2005-09-17 00:54 ]
