I don't look at this site often and I post even less frequently...but I felt the need to today.
I just need to get a few things straight for the people who were never at the Whitmore. Kids who are there will do anything (and I mean ANYTHING) to impress Cheryl and stay on her good side. Believe it or not about 90% of the posts made in the defense of the Whitmore are made by students there, not Cheryl herself. It's like proof of loyalty. I remember one afternoon we a few students, Cheryl, and I were sitting in the pool room. This was only a few days after Cheryl's discovery of this site and the forum devoted to her program. She had been frantically calling ex-students trying to find out who had been posting these things. After that she came to a few of the current students and asked us to start posting "the truth" about our program. Of course that meant discrediting anything negative that was being said. Because of the lies I was asked to post then, I have decided to redeem myself by posting the REAL truth. I covered for the Sudweeks many times when I was there and I did many things for Cheryl's approval that I will regret for a long, long time. If anyone has any questions or doubts, please feel free to PM me at any time. I would love to help out. I feel like people are being lead in too many different directions by all the lies and mendacity polluting much of this site. PLEASE ASK ME... I CAN TELL YOU

Can you tell us about the food?  About therapy?  About group?  about School?  About sneaking kids in places without paying?  About calling kids names?

What reasoning did Cheryl Sudweeks give you kids for not posting HERSELF?  Why does she depend on kids to speak for her?  Why not post herself and defend Whitmore for herself?  She is the owner of this "school" after all.  How would you kids know "the history of former students you had never met?"  Would she merely sit there and give you a RUN-DOWN of their private, confidential histories, so you kids would know what "dirt" to post? How did this work?

What's the Whitmore like for a newcomer? I understand they take involuntary placements, sometimes by escort. But they don't have the same kind of lock-down, physical security that many other programs do. I think I understand a bit about the process by which kids go from resistant to complicit. And, believe me, I don't think any of you should waste a day being ashamed about it. I do think it would be worthwhile to explain it, though; both for the benefit of ppl who have no idea how that happens and for those of us who may have an inkling but would apreciate more insight.

Thanks,

If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.

From reading the various posts: There seems to be "three types of kids sent to Whitmore" Those kids whose parents THOUGHT they were sending their kid to a nice boarding school for academic purposes etc etc... and Those kids whose parents THOUGHT they were sending their kid to Whitmore to address serious behavior problems that required academics, along with therapy...and Those kids whose parenets KNEW their kids needed placement because they had drug, legal, juvenile delequency problems.

The Sudweeks most certainly DID NOT advertise Whitmore Academy as a  "school" to address these various types of needs:  How could the Sudweeks plan or even HOPE to mesh these three very distinct NEEDS into ONE PROGRAM?

My guess? The same kind of pretzel logic that led them to believe that the kid in Canada was up to the task of wintering a herd of horses.

For the community to have 10% to 25% of its men unable to vote or unable to access credit or other privileges of citizenship for the rest of their lives in some states creates a permanently diminished
group within society.

Because they did it before and got away with it.  They did advertize as a youth treatment center at one time, had kids there and got away with it--this is why they think they are above the law- at least Utah law.  They must be paying off the officials because no officials in their right mind would have let them get this far---- since the whistle was blown on them along time ago.

But why? I mean, there are a lot of ways to get money, honesly or not. What would make someone think they're capable of fixing all kinds of problems in other people's kids?

"Narcotics have been systematically scapegoated and demonized. The idea that anyone can use drugs and escape a horrible fate is an anathema to these idiots. I predict that in the near future right-wingers will use drug hysteria as a pretext to set up an international police apparatus."

I'm not certain that the Sudweeks' goal is to fix the problems of these children. I think the Sudweeks enjoy the power they have over not only the kids, but also the power they have over parents of these kids.

Yes, they con the parents out of thousands, and thousands of dollars a year--that's a fact.

But they derive their POWER through total control:
The Sudweeks control all communications-in and out of Whitmore. That is powerful--to be able to tell parents (who by all rights are paying the Suds) when and how they can talk to their own children.

The Sudweeks manipulate these kids, and turn the Sudweeks and Whitmore into THE FAMILY--and are rather successful at this. Just listen to the students on this site.  That is powerful stuff we read here.

The Sudweeks break these kids down to the point that the kids will obey scary demands by the Sudweeks: Kids will beat up other kids--their own friends there, and humiliate each other.

Parents either accept this control and manipulation of their children, or deny that the Sudweeks behave in this manner.

Conning parents out of thousands of dollars is a way of life in many of the Utah (and other states) programs for troubled teens.

Unfortunately, the same can be said for the ed consultants and program referral agents who also see troubled parents as a cash crop.

Bottom Line ... the for-profit teen help industry is driven by desperate, woefully naive parents but the ones who are really paying the price, are the children!

Shame on these misfit owners and operators and the snakeoil salesmen who sell abuse disguised as tough love.

Anon: reference to the ed cons who make so much money referring children to these programs:

To any parents who sent their child to Whitmore:
Please post which educational consultant referred you to Whitmore Academy.  Would be interested in knowing IF anyone besides Sue Scheff or one of her "volunteers" at P.U.R.E. ever referred "CLIENTS" to Whitmore Academy. I was told by Tim Lowe, the therapist at Whitmore, that 100% of the placements came through Sue Scheff.

Send a private message if you prefer.
