Biddeford voters throw support behind racino

BIDDEFORD, MAINE

Voters in Biddeford, Maine, have given their support to bringing a racino to the city.

By a margin of 59 percent to 41 percent, voters approved a referendum Tuesday asking if they favored allowing a so-called racino, a horse track with a slot machine facility, to be built.

Scarborough Downs, which now operates a horse track in Scarborough, and New Hampshire-based Ocean Properties Ltd. want to build a new track, hotel and entertainment complex in Biddeford if voters give their approval.

Statewide voter approval is also required before a racino could be built.
