If your not going to disclose find out the companies policy on back ground checks. If you do not disclose and they do a background check and find it, your out automatically. (I used to do the hiring for a typical corporate america company) They wouldn't hire anyone if they found a discrepancy like that.

I imagine it's like your still pulling time. Everyone complains about the amount of tax money we pay to incarcerate people. Then we turn around and make it impossible for them to support themselves on the outside.

Then they have the nerve to complain about recidivism rates.

See my deal is I have 2 nasty heroin charges but they are almost 10 years old. I havent recieved so much as a ticket since then (ok one speeding ticket)
 But you get my point..Ok I fucked up at 24 years old..
 As Im going thru my stack of apps I see some say "have you been convicted in last 7 years"
 Some its nine years so I can honestly say "no"
 I think that non violent/non theft shit should be sealed after 10 years of no trouble.

depending on the state you can petition to have them exponged or adjudicated (excuse spelling) Talk to your legal aid or a lawyer. You must do so in the state of conviction. call a couple of back groung check agencies and ask how far back they usualy go.

Thanks...I cant get it expunged Ive had lawyer look into it because I had 2 charges..one did get dropped in plea deal but due to the nature of it its there for good.
 But I know people that have jobs with charges like "abuse of a corpse" "murder" etc...
 At least I dont have abuse of a corpse...imagine explaining that on job interview..haha

Yeah fuck em..went to one place and got a "were full" and started hustling ...talking shit about how great I am..the not hiring turned into 2 interviews followed by a 3rd monday.

OK so I deserved the DUH. But what I was trying to say was that most people exaggerate or lie on their resumes. Some companies care enough to check some don't.

Linchpin, that's not manipulation. Unless you're just lying about yourself. But to say what you're good at shouldn't be something to be ashamed of.

So does anyone know how far back they do look? I have something from now 12 years ago that came up last year for an apartment. I am starting to look for jobs too and, since it just passed the 12 year mark, I'm hoping this wont show up anymore. It's really frustrating. Any more advice from anyone??

depends on line of work..if its just some waiting tables or whatever no...almost no restaurants check.
 If you are more professional type person you might be best using the "When I was a kid I made a mistake...blah blah Im in recovery"
 I know a woman who went to the joint for ~ Abusing a corpse~ and she works.
 I filled out 13 applications...of those one said have you been convicted in 7 years? other was nine.
 The rest were "ever"
 I lie on mine because Im trying to work at places like Abuelos, Outback etc..

One time I was talking to my old manager 2 years into the job ...and told him "yah I lied on my app about my felony" cuz at that point it didnt matter..
 I laughed about it...
 He said " I wish you would have told us..we get tax break for hiring felons"

 I dont tell anyone shit...in my opinion I didnt do anything that bad...the heroin I had was going in my arm...I wasnt dealing. I recieved no treatment through my incarceration...unless you call living on a unit run by MEXIKANEME ( Mexican mafia) drug treatment..but it was better than straight

Ive tried being honest about my record and as soon as the word "heroin" comes out of my mouth...its over...
 Why cant they just settle for Poss controlled substance? They always wanna know what it was...
 More people have tried a line of cocaine or ecstacy
 than heroin...
 Heroin has a bad stigma...and it should its the king of dope.
 But not every heroin addict stays that way..I havent used H in 4 years and just kicked methadone at home cold turkey.

Here's what I found in TX about getting records expunged:


Can you get criminal charges cleared from your record?

Were you arrested but never charged?
Were you arrested on a charge that was later dismissed?
Were you acquitted of a charge against you?
Was your conviction overturned on appeal?
Were you pardoned for a conviction?

If you can answer yes to any of these questions, then you MAY be able to get your record expunged.


Which really sucks because none of this applies to me. You would think after 10 or 12 years it would drop off.

I just found this though. Linchpin, did you get deferred adjudication for it? If so you should be able to get what's called an Order of Nondisclosure (at least in TX). Apparently if you wait a certain amount of time you can get it off. I think I actually fall under this category so maybe I can use this. It doesnt take it off, just keeps them from being allowed to report it.

This would be such a relief.

OK well actually it may not help me cause I might want to work for a governmental agency, which doesnt apply to this apparently.

Im kind of leaning towards just dont tell them. If you put it down, what are the chances of getting an interview?? Not high I think.

No there was no deferred. I was busted in 30 something person heroin "ring" sweep. I had multi charges...was followed by narcotics detectives for a year being filmed etc..
 I was in what you call deep shit.If I hadnt had a ok lawyer and no priors I woulda lost 25 years
