Anyone have any thoughts on kidnation?  I think it borders on neglect and abuse of children

The Troubled Teen Industry / animal planet movie: "hope ranch"
« on: July 29, 2007, 04:30:01 PM »
synopsis:

Not dissimilar to such earlier Hollywood features as Boys' Ranch and Johnny Holiday, this made-for-cable drama stars Bruce Boxleitner as ex-cop and former marine J.T. Hope. The owner of a 2,000-acre ranch in Utah, Hope makes it his mission in life to rehabilitate youngsters who, as a result of their criminal records, have been deemed incorrigible. In this instance, Hope focuses his attention on a trio of street punks, including incipient drug-dealer Keith Frazier (Brian Gross). With the help of his no-nonsense ranchhands Colt (Lorenzo Lamas) and Shorty (Barry Corbin), Hope works the boys hard and long (12 hours a day, in fact), tending the horses, cleaning out the barns, and tackling other such grueling chores -- all the while promising the kids that if after two weeks they have straightened themselves out, they will not have to return to the penal system. At first reacting in horror to the strict regimen of Hope's ranch (one of the teens declares, "What is this? An episode of Survivor?"), two of the boys begin showing signs of redemption, and even begin to enjoy their working vacation in the great outdoors. Alas, Keith proves to be a bigger challenge than Hope had anticipated, especially when the boy steals some horse tranquilizers and escapes into the mountains. One of the first films to be produced exclusively for the Animal Planet cable network, Hope Ranch debuted on September 2, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

The Troubled Teen Industry / The State of GA

i worked in a program that has since closed in georgia.  the department of juvenile justice was very similar to florida's way of thinking by sending these kids who were "troubled" and had gotten in trouble to a place in the middle of nowhere.... yeah a shithole for sure.  alot of the southern states, florida, georgia, alabama, south and north carolina, along with the western states, utah and colorado,  insist on locking their youth in a shithole that is essentially a torture camp.

as a counselor for 3 springs, they made us memorize the creeds and recite them as well as made the kids memorize the creeds.  its hard to NOT memorize especially when they made the kids recite the creeds 3 times a day (before meals).  after nightly each group had their own chant they yelled to the world.  ours was

tschintanoesshen (shintanowessen) one group, one vision, one victory..... wooooooohooooooo.

we also had to recite: god grant me the serentity to accept the things i cannot change, the courage to change the things i can and the wisdom to know the difference.  there was a little more to it but i forget the other things.  we also had to chant our prayer over our meal.. and i cant remember what we chanted.

oh and i almost forgot... we also had made the kids memorize the 100+ rules of the facility.... shit like

"shirts must be tucked in"

"hair must be brushed"

"beds must be made"

most of the time i dont react if the kid says 1-2 weeks.... the kids who are the ones who are in trouble are the ones who DONT know they're being sent away to a facility.  9 times out of 10 in most domestic situations, the child has no idea they are about to be ousted from their environments and put through some form of hell.  Chances are good if a kid mentions camp, it brings alot of good memories (boy and girlscouts, regular day camps, overnight camps) especially during the summer months.  unfortunately those kids who get sent away in the 9 times out of 10 cases (you wont hear about it until its too late.)   Additionally that 1 out of 10 was sent there by the state, in which the child knows the consequence and doesnt have time to weasel out of it as they likely transport the child right from the courthouse to the facility they were sentenced to.

unfortunately its a sad majority of parents who do not want to deal with their kids.  does that make them a bad parent? probably not, however many parents dont consider other options before "sending their kid away" to some "facility" that looks good on paper and on the internet.  like hanzomom said, i do feel bad for those parents who are manipulated and dont intend to abuse their kid... but those are the same parents who LEAVE their child IN the abuse because its "the program" and their kid is being "manipulative".  It is the child i feel sorry for at that point especially when theres legitimate accusations of abuse by the facilities.

guest: you say flat not true.... congratulations, you've just joined the bunch of parents who actually CARE about their children. Unfortunately, you've also joined the group of parents who buy into a program when they feel they have no options... hope you have money for a psychologist and psychiatrist cuz ur gonna need those happy meds.  I also never said that ALL parents are that way... just a sad majority... so before you start spouting off on me, get your facts straight.    You're also admitting your a programmee... therefore the program can do no wrong... congratulations child abuser.

We get the schedule. Weekends we get to visit from 3:30 to 5pm, T-Th it's an hour in the evenings---6 to 7, iirc. She gets a five minute call home twice a day--morning and evening--but she has to sign up on a sheet each day for them to know she wants the evening call.

what is iirc?

I wouldnt classify that place as a program.  It sounds like a good place for someone to be.  In all honesty though.  You are the a-typical parent.  You genuinely care for your daughters safety and well being.  You choose carefully based on her best interest.  You arent afraid to ask questions and demand answers if they're not being given.  I admit at first I was skeptical, because I know from experience that while facilitys can appear clean and well kept, its only a front.

However when you started describing the "levels" it was clear that they were not the typical restrictive programmie levels.  It sounded to me that regardless of what "level" the kid was on, he/she could recieve and make phonecalls, and recieve visitation from loved ones.  It also became clear when you stated that the facility would only keep the child as long as the child needed to be kept.  It sounded to me like you had no problem putting your child in and taking your child out when she was ready to be taken home.  That in my mind is not a program.

There are good places like that, but again you are not the typical "program" parent -- if you can even call yourself that.  Most people who are searching for a place to put their kids dont even consider what kind of reputation the place has.  Most of them are so sick of their own offspring that they wished they had used the condom and flushed them down the toilet.  Its THOSE people who are program parents.  Sadly, their kids are caught up in the middle of a money making hellhole which promises nothing but devastation and pain to kids, but "peace of mind" to those who could not care for their offspring.

Kudos to you for finding a place that could care and offer the quality you and your daughter need.
