The Troubled Teen Industry / A cult?

Niles,

It really is pointless to debate these things with Christians.  They really are set in this way, and are not open to change.

They just need to keep that stuff out of the government, out of the (public) schools, out of doctors' offices and pharmacies.

It is totally sad how some people are so convinced that we are living in "the last days".  That sort of thinking is very egotistical.

This "last days" theory is also an excuse for people to continue polluting and destroying the environment.  One politician (okay, I really don't remember which one.  A House representative, I think) *actually said*, when questioned about pollution and shouldn't we try to keep the earth clean for the coming generations,  "I'M NOT SURE HOW MANY MORE GENERATIONS WILL BE HERE BEFORE CHRIST RETURNS".

These people can make any claims to salvation as they want...it doesn't change the fact that they will reap the repurcusions (whether through karma, or judgement by God, or whatever) for DISRUPTING THE ECOSYSTEM, AND DESTROYING THE EARTH, IT'S ATMOSPHERE, AND THE CREATURES WHO LIVE HERE; basically for failing to respect and live in harmony with the earth and with each other.

Linchpin, I hope you are feeling better.

For muscle cramps, Flexaril 10mg should help (talk to your doctor or street pharmacist).  Make sure you are getting plenty of potassium.

As cliche as this sounds, yoga can do a world of good.  Get some videos and do it at home.  I recommend "AM and PM yoga", by Guiam (comes in white packaging).  These videos are short, only about 25 minutes each.  Do it when you wake up, and before you go to sleep.

It is very important to eat a healthy diet.  Organic fruits and veggies, ect...  I promise you will feel lots better if you stick to a healthy diet (no fast food!)

Good luck.

If your daughter is promiscuous, or even just sexually active, the very most important thing is that she has had good sex education (really, all kids need good sex ed.).

From what I understand, these days kids are not getting thorough, informative, or even factual information in sex ed.

I was sexually active since age 16.  But about age 12, I read (every month) "Teen" magazine, and nearly every month they had excellent information about STD's and contraception.

Having all that information empowered me to make responsible and informed choices, both before and after I started to have sex.

Good sexual education is *very* important.

Perri, sorry if I missed any posts you may have made (explaining this), but could you please tell me:

*How old are you and when were you in the program?

*Were you sent there by your parents?  Voluntary or not?

*How long were you there?

*What do you think would have happened to you if you had not gone to the program?

*What exactly were you doing that got you sent there?

By the way, I was also adopted (as an infant).  While at PCS, my therapist always tried to turn this into a big issue, and, for me, at the time, it was not an issue at all.

Teenagers have enough issues to deal with, and it was difficult enough (for me) to have to deal with the 2 parents who raised me.  The very last thing on my mind was to think about any additional parents.

What are your thoughts on that?

Thanks.

Amanda-  I know you did not like thinking where you were going, if you kept "living like..living, thinking like...thiking, doing what..doing".

But part of getting older is that people *change* what they are doing, how they are thinking, ect...  It's only natural.

When I left PCS, I was worse off than when I went in.  I was quite angry at my parents, but hesitant to let them know that, for fear of being sent back.  I had all the symptoms of PTSD, but wasn't able to articulate on it.

And I began to hang out with a very seedy and negative group of people.  I had an abusive boyfriend.  I stopped going to school in 12th grade.  I guess I thought that no one else would want to hang out with me, considering where I had just been.

But, suprise, suprise!  I grew out of it!  I finished high school and college, I began living in my own apartment at age 19, I have an excellent boyfriend and good friends and a cool job, and I'm very happy.  I eventually lost the 30lbs I gained at PCS.

Thats not to say that I don't do anything risque.  I enjoy a few cocktails, might smoke pot once a year, or if I have a stomache flu, I have been know to take my clothes off, after a night of dancing, and swim in a fountain.  But thats okay!

I am a responsible, contributing member of society, *in spite* of going to PCS, not *because* of it.

Anyway, I've seen plenty of kids who could have been construed as "troubled" as teenagers, kids who did worse things than I ever did.  These kids never got sent to programs, and most of them are fine now.

One reason the Christian church picks and chooses from the bible is *propoganda*.

I also find their deity, "God", to be mean and vengeful.  I think perhaps they are trying to look toward something good, the creator, the original source of love, the light, or whatever; they have just been misled or manipulated into believing that this entity is jealous and vengeful and should be feared;  and I think that the church and community leaders have been instilling these ideas for many years, for propoganda purposes, or to exact more money out of people, or to control people and keep them in line, and to promote patriarchy and repress women.

I think this is very sad, and I feel bad for people who view creation/ or it's creator in this manner.

What makes you so certain that your Christian ideas of the afterlife, the divine, and this one compilation of writings are the *one truth*???

Again, if you want to be on that narrow path, fine.  But you are really in no position to judge others' paths.

"racism against pretty people"??

Yeah, sometimes it's hard to be a young woman... especially being blonde, and you always feel like people are staring at you (I guess they are..pervs) and men are always trying to talk to you.  Plus many women are initially distrustful of you.

But I would never say something like that on television.  In fact, I don't understand why people go on the "bachelor"-like shows anyway.  My family would be humiliated if I went a show like that.

If the bible helps you to know God, then thats good.

What I am saying is, it is ignorant and small-minded to think that the bible is the *only* way to know God, and that Jesus is the *only* way to God, and that the bible is the *only* way to know Jesus.

My relationship with "God" became strongest when I stopped reading the bible and learned about other philosophies, and I became close to Jesus when I take care of people (which is why I became a nurse), and also when I started studying literature (found outside the bible).

So, I know first hand that the bible is not necessarily the best tool for everyone to learn about history and God, and in fact, it is not necessary to read the bible in order to know Jesus.

If you listened to Jesus now, he would probably tell not to judge others relationship with the divine.  And to lighten up and keep it simple.

Anyway, "God" is all encompasing, non-discriminatory, absolute love.  "Satan" is the one who wants you to fear, and discriminate, and feel guilty.

Anon- stop comparing these programs to pharmacuticals.

Anyway, cancer patients make AN INFORMED CHOICE to receive chemotherapy.  There is tons of scientific research that goes into chemotherapy research, and scores of doctors and scientists who  devote their careers to cancer research.  The same cannot be said for the "teen help" industry.

It is a very poor comparison. "Don't you see how silly you sound?"  :wstupid:

Insulin is a controlled substance, available only by prescription, and administered only by health care professionals or someone who has been specifically trained to administer it.  It is also not the first nor the preferred method of controlling diabetes.  And if someone is using insulin, their blood sugar levels need to be monitored several times a day.

I don't care (what the bible says) Jesus says!!

Buzzkill, I think it is you who doesn't see "the simplicity of it".  "God" is original love, pure and simple.  You do not have to follow any prophet to find love,  nor follow these specific little rules.  Just spread love- love others, love yourself, love the Earth, and you will be happy!  It's really quite simple.

The Troubled Teen Industry / Why WWASP is so dangerous!!
« on: May 04, 2005, 09:29:00 AM »
Hmmm..."perception"..."guess everyones perception is different"...well I guess my "perception" is that no program should be implemented by unlicensed, untrained people, EVER!  Any nurse or doctor (worth their license) would agree.

You see, nurses and doctors and other licensed people are held ACCOUNTABLE for our actions at work.  If we fuck up, we would be investigated, and could have our license taken away, and could not practice anymore.

These unlicensed workers are not monitored and are not held accountable for any of their unprofessional and non-theraputic behaviour (mostly, I guess because they don't know any better).

I don't mean to sound like some snob, or that I think I'm so smart or great cause I went to college for a few years.  I don't.  But I can see just how dangerous it is to have these idiots working with adolescents in these sorts of programs.
