Don't be so quick to dis a paralegal.

A paralegal is not necessarily just a law office gofer or file clerk.

An good paralegal is an expert in preparing correct legal documents, recognizing and correcting inaccuracies, and gathering research and resources that build an attorneys case. Paralegals can have specialties in particular legal fields, just like attorneys.

I know of one attorney who says the paralegals at his firm are better and more  knowledgeable about this than the attorneys, including himself .

Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again.

Memphis sex-therapy group faces complaint

It claims to convert gay teens to heterosexuality

By MATT GOURAS
Associated Press

The state is investigating an abuse complaint against a therapy group in Memphis that claims to turn gay teens into heterosexuals.

The Department of Children's Services says it received a complaint about Love in Action, which runs an outpatient therapy program. The complaint was screened and enough substance was found to open an investigation, state officials said.

All other details are confidential and the state can't specify the nature of the complaint or investigation, K. Danielle Edwards, a DCS spokeswoman, said yesterday.

Love in Action, which runs a program for children and teens called Refuge, said the investigation is without merit and was filed anonymously by someone with little knowledge of the program.

"The Internet accusations on holding kids without their permission ... and the other crazy allegations are ridiculous," said John Smid, the group's executive director.

The group's work has been the focus of protest by gay advocacy groups, who say it is dangerous and irresponsible to engage in so-called ex-gay therapy.

Earlier this month, a Web logger going by the name of "Zach" said his parents were sending him to a religious organization that would try to convert him to heterosexuality.

The teen identified himself as a 16-year-old from Bartlett, Tenn., and said his parents "tell me that there is something psychologically wrong with me. ... I'm a big screwup to them, who isn't on the path God wants me to be on. So I'm sitting here in tears ... and I can't help it."

Edwards said DCS can't say if its investigation is related to that boy's situation, or even specify when the complaint was filed.

But Smid says it is connected. He said the accusation was probably filed by someone who read the blog and used it "as a foundation to stir up a bunch of stuff."

"The doors are not locked down and the kids are not required to be here, and they come here with their parents," Smid said.

The Web site for Refuge states it offers programs ranging from two to six weeks. The group says it "is a ministry designed to be a safe place for young people and their families to find true freedom from addictions through the power of Jesus Christ."

It says it can fix "addictive behaviors" such as pornography, drugs, sexual promiscuity and homosexuality.

The cost runs from $1,500 to $4,000, the Web site says.

Another non-Seeder here...

"Getting Over It"  is not the same as forgetting about it. If there is one thing veterans of these programs can do it is to speak out about their experiences.

It may go some way toward preventing others from being hurt.

No coincidence.  But here's something, the posters at Free Republic are howlin' and trying to blame it on the "liberals"  or the Dems. ubet.

Somethings coming down, maybe just maybe the wingnits will get a clue that the "Family Values, Patriotism,  Keep America Safe and Free blah blah is just that.

The movers and shakers in this administration don't really care about the individual American's home, family, life or liberty.

If ya don't have money power yer just so much meat fer the grinder.

But of course, if ya don't make money, you can't be a REAL American now can ya.

I suppose it would be unreasonable to propose that those who have their property confiscated would be forever after exempt from any  taxes assessed by the State who siezed their property for the sake of higher tax revenues

google "John Paulk"  "gay bar"

Still, if you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.

I agree, and it's not that I think this guy was wise at the time.

Religion is based . . . mainly on fear . . . fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand. . . . My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race.

A "Green Warrant" is a warrant served on a person deemed to be a danger to himself or others, allowing this person to be taken into custody for evaluation.

Not me... but this "person of my aquaintance"  resisted  someone trying to serve a "green warrant".  In the struggle he bit the man's hand and escaped.  As he ran, he spit some hard spiky lump of something into the bushes.

I condemn false prophets, I condemn the effort to take away the power of rational decision, to drain people of their free will--and a hell of a lot of money in the bargain. Religions vary in their degree of idiocy, but I reject them all. For most people, religion is nothing more than a substitute for a malfunctioning brain.

Hmmmm,

I wonder if "the one who kidnaps" is aquainted with a person of my aquaintance.

I found the story on fornits and surfed about. Yeah, I'm amazed at how quickly the blogs rallied... Many of the comments express astonishment that this sort of thing goes on.  Theres been a few mentions of Straight, (including a link to anonymity anonymous) more mentions of Tranquility Bay.  I posted info about Synanon here and there (Thanks Ginger!)also the Fred Collins story (Thanks FKA!)   because no-one seems to recall where this stuff came from. Plus it would embarasss LIA  to be asked questions about their relationship to "Synanon Church"

(They are neither wise as serpents OR innocent as doves, and likely never heard of Synanon.)

It's true what Patriot said about talking in past terms. How many times have we been told to "get over it" ?

Also,  thanks to Ginger, for the Synanon thought. I posted some Synanon info as comments to some blogs.

Wonder how Smid would answer questions about his relationship to the Synanon Church?

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed
to the government's policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Does any of this sound familiar?

When the government's boot is on your throat, whether it is a left boot or a right boot is of no consequence.
