Tommy, they may be crazy but they ain't dumb. Just look at how they're intimidating this generation of kids. Not long ago, there was a story about some idiotic teachers and cops actually hand cuffing and arresting a 6yo little girl for handing her friend a little baggie full of clover. You think this generation will come up free of anxiety? Please! We have to challenge it or it will be accepted.
Here's an amusing example of how that works. Ever wonder what's so bad about dandelions? I mean really! They're pretty. They're nutritious. They have some useful and relatively safe medicinal quality. You can make a delightfully spicy wine from the flowers. So why all the hate? There's actually a reason, but few who spent some part of their weekend spraying reformulated Agent Orange on the dandelions in their yard probably ever heard of it.
The reason why dandilions are so universally despised is
because they're such a good and hearty food and medicine source. Dandelions are a staple in older European peasant cultures. So, back in the days of the coal wars, you could tell if a man were getting ready to join a strike if his wife started cultivating dandilions in the yard. It became dangerous to allow dandelions in your yard.
Few really recall the reason why these particular useful and attractive plants are so hated. But hated they remain. Even though grocery stores now sell dandelion greens for about a buck a pound, people still don't seem bothered by the contradiction. I wonder how often you could find Roundup and dandelion greens on the same sales receipt.
Same goes for Cannabis. The WWII generation who vote and write letters today probably aren't much impressed w/ the dry fact that MJ is safe, medically useful and just about the most benign recreational drug ever discovered. What they hate is all of the vague associations w/ communism, tye-dye, negro musicians seducing wide eyed white girls. It's all about attitude and culture war.
When a religion is good, I conceive it will support itself; and when it does not support itself, and God does not take care to support it so that its professors are obliged to call for help of the civil power, 'tis a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one.
