Got a call from a resident from 30 years ago today. Actually at lunch time. She pick my phone # off the Elan Alum Site.
We chit chatted a bit found out she arrived around Sept of 1977 and stayed until 1979. She is from Chicago and I do not have permission to say who she is.

Anyway she went on to tell me she had a conversation with Jeffery Gottlieb last Wenesday 8/25/10. In the course of this conversation Jeffery explained to her that Elan had been reduced to one house E-3 and that only 41 students resided there. That by late spring of next year after Graduation, that Elan would be closing down. She went on to say that Jeffery was retiring after next year, that there was nothing more to do. Sharon no longer really wanted to keep Elan open, that the building E-3 showed the affects of being neglected, all the houses other then E-3 had been sold off with the land.

Folks I have called others to verify this and it looks at this point to be valid info.
 
Man, I say bravo to the folks who have worked their asses off to see this day, many folks behind the scenes pushed and badgered many employees to stop the madness, most listened and moved on while others did not.
Why, no one I knew ever reported abuse or brought lawsuits against Elan, I am sad to say, "I just don't know". I don't have a answer why I sat around waiting for so many years and did nothing, I can not blame others.

His family history is bellow, They say he is a Zuni, Indian Not a Chicagojo Nor Navajo , and so live's the legend of Pan Face and his Father, Dad was the head shrink at the States Ville Prison in Ill, for over 40 years, That Prison is still one of the worst in the country, I was there for 5 years back in 77-82, never had the privilege of meeting Dr Pan Face, but did hear of him. Kind of a spooky guy, But so is Pan Face, one has to imagine what Pan Face did to get thrown out of Psychiatrist Fathers home, If anyone was equipped to handle problems and violence it should have been his father. He could run a prisons psych problems, but not his own,?? Pan Face pulled something that could't be tolerated, and he was  banished, Probably threw Dr Marvin Swartz, who was very active in Elan placements, and worked with the courts very closely, considering the good Dr.  also had a law degree and practiced.

Elan was a very different and horrifying place  back in the 70's, Things went on that normal minds couldn't even think of. Not to take anything away from the folks at Straights Inc.

There are those who suffer from grave emotional and mental disorders , but they too can recover if they have the ability to be honest with themselves.

I have to say Arty... I don't agree on many post that are made, however on this one you nailed it.. I also appreciate the fact that you put in some sources from the AA Traditions. If a person is in fact a member of said orginization should they not follow these Traditions to the best of their ability?? I ask this question not to point any fingers but only to validate what you have stated.

I only use Straight Survivors as an example ,because they ran and run a no holds bared attack, and truly stand up as a group, against Sembler and his Mob. Look at some of their video's, they are as bad as Channel 5 News, they get right in the thick of it and don't back down, Amen to all of them.

Most conservative folk's that can afford Elan's services, would not understand nor take this type of stuff seriously. It's strange, and out there, kind of like the problems the parents are dealing with at home already, Jeff W. Takes a more professional subdued way of going at it, with great photo format and the whole layout is very prepositionally done. I believe that is what Jeff does ,is a web designer. He is a great guy and very smart. :rocker:  :rocker:

Then we can all go back to our perspective feuds, and wars, and bashing of each other.

But taking a break from that just might stop some of the feuds and bashings,??

For years after getting out Newton still scared the hell out of me, especially because I lived close to him.  Then when my dear friends RTP, Kpickle and others and I went to "confront" him, I realized he's nothing more than a wanna-be guru and total control freak.  When we were in Straight, we couldn't speak our minds and wouldn't dare (at least I wouldn't...too scared) to even question what was being done to us. When I saw him later, out here in the real world he showed himself for what he truly is....a malignant narcissist (even his neighbors see this and they had no idea of his past) and it drove him absolutely NUTS that he couldn't call the shots or shut me up.  He couldn't slam us to the ground for speaking like he did when we were 'inside'.  It was one of the single most healing things I've ever done.  For so long I saw him as the boogey man but in real life, he's just a pussy that hides behind either his Straight director status or now, the cloak of religion.  

It may be time for another visit.   :seg2:
