Gang assault in school leaves victim in hospital

9/12/2006
By: Staff

A group of students attending the Academy at Ivy Ridge in Ogdensburg were expelled for beating up a new student. Four 17-year-olds allegedly punched and kicked a 14-year-old boy in the groin area, sending him to the hospital.
The four teens were arrested and jailed. The Academy at Ivy Ridge is a boarding school for troubled teens. The school expelled the four students immediately after hearing about the fight.

Tom Nichols, public relations coordinator, said the issue is taken extremely serious.

"Ivy Ridge has a zero tolerance policy for any bullying that goes on and we take that very seriously and we have cameras to monitor and take care of our young people,? he said. ?And when there is an issue, we deal with it quickly."

Bail for the alleged attackers was set at $2,500 each. They're scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

I've been warning parents about this for a while now. To think that a 12-14 year old is on the same maturity level as 16-18 year olds is ridiculous. Kids in high school barely talk to others in seperate grades their lives are so different. But for some reason WWASPS idea of one treatment model for everyone who comes in appeals to some parents. When you are an adult a year or two is not a big deal but when an adolescent it makes a big difference both physically and emotionally. There were always rumors going around when I was locked up if you assaulted a kid you would get arrested, expelled and eventually return home. Even if you had to serve a couple months for assault, it's better to know your sentence. WWASPS is an open-ended sentence that can continue indefinitely. These kids who beat up the other kid probably had a plan in mind when they did it, and they succeeded.
I hate to say it, but violence seems to be the only way to escape and shut down a program. Whenever there is a riot, or fighting, the kids involved get sent home.

Wow, believe it or not.......this doesn't make WWASPS look bad. It makes them look good. They set an example with these boys, and I am sure they damn well made sure the press got a hold of it too.

Take it from someone who has experienced being locked up at a very young age. You get teased to death, I was pushed around by older kids. Then I had some girl freak out on me by coming into class where I was minding my own business, and I had no clue she was even yelling at me, there was a whole classroom of us, anyway before I knew it was directed at me, she started punching me in the face, that black eye I got was bad, not to mention the cartilage damage that took a few years to go away.

But, the longer I stayed the more I became like her. I had several altercations with kids both older and younger. I even punched an autistic girl in the face. In Cross Creek there was a girl who was developmentally disabled, and she even got on my nerves, as well as everyone elses, but it was I who punched her in the face. I got away with it because everyone in the van took my side. Isn't that just awful. We all said we were just playing, and she accidentally got an elbow to the face. They believed us over her. There were plenty times when I was 12-13 that girls did stuff that was very abusive to me and got away with it.

It's just not a healthy enviroment, these warehouses for kids. What staff isn't doing to mess with your head, believe me another student is. It's a dog eat dog world in there. Mentally you can go off the deep end. It's really sickening to me.

Thats the point of those places.

To live in fear, and work the program, and in doing so "hold the other kids accountable" and sell them out so nobody has any friends, making the breakdown even more complete and quicker in coming.

Obviously when someone does something that FORCES the outside authorities to get involved, they have to feign action, like 'expelling' them to... Tranquility Bay, but oh well.

I just hope the kids who assaulted the 14 yo got sent to jail and not TB. Ive heard of kids trying to kill another child to force the program to close, or at least to go to jail where its not so bad as a program.

What I am saying or suggesting is that this was a publicity stunt. I am sure that this really happened, but how many other worse cases have happened where nothing has happened?

I agree, I hope that they do go to jail, and not TB.

It depends on how gullable or crooked (and paid off) the doctor or other authorities dealt with are.

My other point was 'expelled' is... just euphamestic for being sent to a harder program. These kids might as well be in the hands of the gestapo or the CIA... it sucks to think about.

Look I am just glad that TB didn't exist when I was at Cross Creek. When I threatened to expose something, there was someone who threatened me with sending me away to Wilderness Boot Camp. Had they had Tranquility Bay, my ass would've been there. That I know for sure.

In the TB documentary, one of the guys they interviewed described how another student tried to kill him while they were both scuba diving (must've been high upper levels to get that privelege!). The would-be murderer was under the mistaken belief that if someone died in the program, it would have to shut down for at least 6 months. He was willing to murder another student just to have the chance to be somewhere else for at least 6 months.

Gee, I wonder if the parents of the 14-year-old decided the place was too dangerous and took him home. One can hope.

Sounds to me like the only reason the kids got the boot was the police somehow got involved. I bet bottom dollar had the 5-0 not caught wind of the devilish deed the attackers would have been consquenced and life goes on.

Seen far worst things happen myself. Had to wade into more than one full on group stomp down to rescue some kid. Got a few punches and kicks for my efforts most of the time. Used to piss me off though.. I always wished I was like water flowers or something with a garden hose and the beat down took place when I had the hose in my hand. That way I could spray them all down. Probably should not find that idea amusing, but I can't help it.

I somehow missed this story, and I'd never seen pictures of AIR before. Isn't it supposed to be one of the premier WWASPs programs?
It looked like an tenament building in the slum.
Wonder how many parents have actually seen the facility. Amazing.

An excellent testiment to the disadvantages of aggregating distressed teens. Might other boys fall victims to attacks when someone desparately wants out?
