Stuff you've been listening to
« Reply #2385 on: September 03, 2007, 04:19:03 PM »
Again you prove your excellent taste in sounds..........

"Ghost Rider", hell yeah!  That's a great one.  Martin Rev helped produce the Raveonettes tip of the hat to Suicide, "Attack Of The Ghost Riders", or so I hear.   I'm not sure the song you were thinking of, but I am in no way an expert on them.   I did neglect to mention "Frankie Teardrop" in the songs I listened to the other day......and I did have my STEVE BROWN shootout yesterday,  listening to "Dominic Christ".  That one was for you, STEVE......(actually, it was more for me......)  But back to the greatness of Suicide----"Frankie Teardrop" is one intense piece of music, a song about a Vietnam vet who got laid off from his job and is contemplating killing himself (and possibly his kid).   Fucking great piece, and it kinda makes ya think about, well, I don't wanna go into in great detail, but I understand the feeling of the song's protagonist...these guys had a realistic view of what life can be in the shitty times.  I wouldn't be surprised if "Frankie Teardrop" is about someone they know.

My first introduction to Suicide was on a Ryko or DIY (I think) sampler series that chronicled the punk scene in several different cities, there was one for LA, one for Boston, and one from NY, as well as two from the UK.  There may be more, but those are the ones I heard.  They were really great, and a lot of the bands on there I would have otherwise nevewr heard of.   Anyway, "Cheri, Cheri" by Suicide was on the NY compilation, and it just fucking floored me.  My roommate at the time would get a littled worried as I listened to the song again and again, usually while drinking heavily.  It's fucking magic, though, a really sad, slow paeon to a (lost?) love.......I was having a hard time getting over a break-up, and it provided a nice soundtrack to brood by.   I'm over her now, but my love for Suicide remains.  There's a track on one of their releases, called "23 Minutes Over Brussels" which is really about five songs recorded from a live show, one I assume was played in Belgium.  Check it out.  Oh, yeah, another virtue of Suicide is that they really bothered another roommate's asshole girlfriend, it freaked her out to the point where she was screaming and ran away.  She's a real cunt, that one.  I'm glad they bothered her,  I only wish she had stayed gone.

What kind of music..?

I heard the Led Zeppelin song on the radio, downloaded Metallic K.O. on SoulSeek, and found the Neil Young CD at the library.

Iggy & The Stooges - Metallic K.O.

What a great fucking record......ladies and gentlemen, The Stooges' next number is a slow dance called "I Got Shit"!!!!!.  This record is what live, in your face, raw rock and roll is all about.  This shit reminds us that rock and roll was at one time considered dangerous, a predatory beast stalking your teenage daughter's virginity and enticing your 17-year old son with a gallon of liquor, some pills, and the keys to a '72 Charger.

Sure, the sound quality of the recording is less than perfect, and there are some rough spots throughout, but it captures the energy.  It is a wonderful document of what was an incredible, incindiary, live rock and roll show.  Jesus loves The Stooges!
