Dallas STRAIGHT teens
« on: October 29, 2004, 01:44:00 PM »
I thought I would ask again since many more ex-Dallas STRAIGHT people have come across the site since the last time I posted...

Does anyone know of any specific KIDS (El Paso, North Jersey, and/or Greater Salt Lake City) teens that were admitted to the Dallas STRAIGHT program after the KIDS facilities closed?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Someone from Dallas STRAIGHT once posted:
""I didnt know if you knew but after California Straight closed down around half of their kids were transfered to us in Dallas. Sometime in August-September of 1990 maybe a little later""

This made me curious...

The mini-timeline of where and when is as follows:

10/89
KIDS of EP closed and most EP teens went to other KIDS facilities (Utah, California, Jersey).

1989
KIDS of SC closed (transitioned to STRAIGHT).

07/90
KIDS of Greater Salt Lake closed (transitioned to LIFE-LINE).

08/90
STRAIGHT California closed and teens (some from former KIDS of Southern California) were sent to other STRAIGHT (crooked) facilities, primarily Dallas.

10/91
STRAIGHT Dallas closed.

"STRAIGHTLINGS" never heard of KIDS???  We heard about you!!!  We often referred to ourselves at the time as "the second toughest program in the world" to infer STRAIGHT was the first.  There were also other references to the STRAIGHT program throughout my years in the KIDS program.

A list of those California teens that left the El Paso program to start KIDS of Southern California in Yorba Linda is posted below.

I was the one who made the comment that you posted regarding the California kids.

The only kid I knew of who had been in Kids of El Paso was a boy named Paco Durant.  He did not come from the California close down though, he was there when i came in.

Oh sorry, I didn't mean to make you dig up a bunch of info. But none of the names sound familiar, although I think that Paco was there when I was also. I think the only other program I ever heard about while I was there was another straight in California, they talked about it a lot and how lucky we all were to be in Texas.... of course they also used to tell stories about there being alligators in the creek down the road, and how people would get attacked by the alligators. That had been my initial plan too, to run out and hide in the stupid creek.

We never heard of your group, (at least during the 10 months I spent at Dallas Straight).  Funny thing is that we were always warned of Cynacore and how lucky we were to not be there and that Cynacore was the toughest rehab to be placed at.  I'm pretty sure you could only go there if you were court ordered.  My mom said she had checked into it.

Yes, Carmel.  I remember that you replied to my post about California KIDS/STRAIGHT.  I just thought I would fish around with the same question again to see what I could catch.  I also re-read the thread and recall that I also said I would scan in the Texas Monthly and the National Geographic STRAIGHT articles....I never did.  That promise was over 771 days ago.  Sinc there has been more talk of the two articles I thought I would finally try to make good on my promise today. Thanks again for your help.

We were also told spok stories about Cenikor.  However, I realized many years later that t was actually an adult only facility.  My cousin eneded up checking himself into it.

We did hear some things about the old KIDS groups.  Mostly threats and warnings about how we should be so thankful that we didnt have it as bad as the KIDS program.  Funny, we were always told by staff too about how hard their programs were compared to ours.

As a rule, children love their parents, believe what they teach, and take great pride in saying that the religion of mother is good enough for them.

before entering straight, dallas in 91', about three different long term treatment programs tried solicieting their services to my family...being that i was about to turn 18, cenikor was one of them....i was terrified of that place, because i heard horror stories, so i chose straight....ya dumb idea....oh well, at least i was able to leave straight, and nobody has ever tried to collect money from my parents since i left....i was very glad to learn that they shut down a few months later

In college I had a presentation to do to do with two other guys.  I met them at Cenikor as they were working there at the time.  I had no idea where I was going or what I was walking in to.  It was a strange place that creeped me out and reminded me of my program at the time.
I think they also hold haunted houses each year for Halloween though this year I heard nothing of them.  "Cenikor" is similiar to "Synanon", I wonder if there is any connection.~

When I was on 4th phase a guy escaped from Kids El Paso and hung out in my Georgraphy class everyday for a while.  His aunt was the teacher.  We talked for a while the first couple of days.  The simularities of straight were mind boggeling to me because I did not know of any affiliation between the two.  But I was told that I wasn't allowed to speak with him by staff members that went to the same school as me after a couple of days.
That teacher, his aunt hated Straight/Kids.
She was awesome.
She'd sit me next to girls just to defy straight rules.  I'd ask to move and she would say her classroom was not Straight.
