A friend of mine suggested this route for an upcoming trip to china. He admits his information may well be out of date and suggests I have it double checked.

Quote

This itinerary is based 90% on train travel, with a few bus rides in Yunnan province and possibly a flight from Guangzhou to Beijing at the end.

Qingdao - Beijing - Datong - Taiyuan - Xian - Chengdu - Leshan - Chongqing - Chengdu again - Kunming - Dali - Lijiang - Kunming - Nanning - Guangzhou.

The first time you could just skip through Beijing. Just head to the bus terminal and jump a train to Datong, a buddhist city with loads of caves and statues....I think it's a UNESCO site. Next down to Taiyuan...there's a city near there called Pingyao or something....supposed to be a great hangout spot....from there to Xian, terracotta warriors etc.....to Chengdu and the stupid pandas.....pretty cool city though....next to Leshan and the world's tallest Buddha statue. Bus from there to Chongqing....if possible do the three gorges boat trip, or at least get out on the Yangtze on a boat. Chongqing is supposed to have the spiciest food on Earth, but I never noticed. Guess I ate the wrong places. Next, you'll prob have to head back to Chengdu to get your train to Kunming.....which is also a cool little town....do a day trip to the Stone Forest. Take a train from there to Dali.....town in the mountains, takes a few hours.....bus from there to Lijiang which is a stunning old chinese town...amazing views, great food.
After here you might need to suck up an overnight sleeper bus back to Kunming. Train to Nanning. If you want to a side trip to Yangshou. On to Guangzhou.....plane or train back to Hong Kong or wherever you are flying out of.
Make sure you have a guidebook before you get to China. It can be a tough place to travel in otherwise.

Any thoughts on this?

you spend all this time fighting against child abuse, and various forms of psychological manipulation which results in the suffering of countless people...all the while exploiting this (usa's) countries laws of freedom of speech for your radical means.

and you want to go to CHINA? ancient history aside, china is one of the most tyrannical govts in the world. they do everything you fight against, but to their citizens on a massive scale. and you want to give them your tourist dollars?

what is it with the newfound tourist curiosity with china? capitalist or communist, at the core, it's still the same fucked up tyrannical corrupt country it used to be. they still kill and torture falun gong and other religious groups. they imprison anyone they suspect of being against the goverment. and their cultural mentality has led to china's overpopulation, which in turn has led to the erosion of basic human dignity and morals to the point that people throw baby girls in dumpsters so they can have a chance at having a baby boy. on top of that, they are the world's worst polluters and will end up turning all of their cultivatable land into a barren landscape from overuse of fertilizer within the next century

it's a disgrace that people are willing to overlook china's daily human rights violations in return for free trade. it's pathetic, and the bejjing olympics are an absolute abomination. i always watch the olympics, but i'm not even going to glance at them this year.

nothing against the People of china, just their mentality, the goverment, and the way things are run.

dont waste your tourist dollars.
by spending money in china, you are casting a vote for the continuation of their policies.

so are your for or against torture?

What niles said.. and frankly having visited China before I'd have a hard time telling the difference between the USA and Chinese government when it comes to torture and the abuse of civil rights.

I got a good laugh out of the China protest post.   This person obviously has NO idea what the US has been up to... in the past or the present.   This same person probably thinks we supported democracy in Vietnam and South America, and would be baffled to know we put the Taliban in power to begin with.

would totally have to agree with you, but we still have freedom of speech, press, and religion. in the u.s you can put up a website or march on a street advertising your hate for the government or your radical beliefs all you want, and then the press can publish all the stories they want about it. sure, you'll attract attention, but you'll be ok as long as you dont pose a serious threat. in china doing that could get you executed.
on top of that, i'm sorry if this sounds intolerant, but i can see how a culture which believes that eating deer antlers will give you a boner and STILL hasn't gotten over it after modern science, failed as a whole in the total scope of history.

i understand your resentment, but direct it somewhere else. i've known that "spreading democracy" is a euphemism for "protecting foreign economic interests" since i was six years old. I probably know much, much more about this subject than you do, considering i majored in history, with a concentration in post-WWII U.S-foreign affairs, and minor in philosophy.

I'll check on this myself once I get there. Do I have to whack the deer myself or can I get the antler's preground?

Hey Che!

Will you please send me a post card, and perhaps a souvenir from your trip?  WTF am I saying? Everything in America is made in China anyway.

Also: consider to changing your name to Mao Gookin when you post from your trip!

Xie xie! and 旅途愉快!

Are you guys ever going to tell us the story of how one brother ended up in a program and the other working for it? That is absolutely Shakespearean , you must tell us everything.

Dear Brother,

Go to Memere's(grandma's) old house and count 25 meters past the end of the divingboard facing directly away from the pool. It should take you behind that line of ugly assed trees.

Dig straight down and don't stop till you hit a 4 foot long 6 inch round pvc pipe with big fat end caps.

loads of good things in there.
