Naples Daily News:
The demonstrations throughout the nation May 1 were eye-opening for many of us.
A great majority of our ancestors migrated to this country for a number of reasons. They came and learned the language and customs already here. They remembered their heritage and from whence they came, but struggled to make something of themselves and teach their children to overcome and excel. They became true Americans.
What transpired May 1 was a travesty. It showed that those here illegally have no real rights other than being unwanted and ill-mannered guests within our borders, and how complacent this country has become toward our own laws and history.
Those who immigrate here through the proper channels are more than welcome. They are here to become something better than they could possibly become in their homelands, they enjoy the freedoms in our Constitution and are willing to stand and be counted. May they be blessed and continue to enhance our society.
The choice for these people is simple and clear: Apply to be a citizen, contribute to all facets of our society, pledge your allegiance here and live by our laws or return to your old homeland and make your voice heard there.

Naples Daily News:
Many blame President Bush for deciding to go to war in Iraq.
Before the war, we experienced the first World Trade Center bombing, the embassy bombings, the USS Cole bombing and 9/11.
Since the war, we have not experienced such an incident. Our enemy is being engaged in Iraq. Our military is being used to protect America and Americans. That is its proper role.
Bush should be praised, not blamed.
