I was in KHK in 1983, and have been reading your posts with much interest and enthusiasm. Even in Northern Thailand, I can't escape my memories of the Hebron Hilton. The computers in this Internet cafe are early-Clinton-era, so I can't work on them too well. However, when I get back to the States, I'd really like to get in touch with you. The KHK forum has been seriously lacking in meaningful discourse since I first found it in 2006, and I'm glad someone from Hebron is putting in the hours!

The person I'd really like to see pay, by the way, is Kathy Balinger (SP?), head psychologist in KHK at the time of my incarceration. She once called herself "Our God." Or, to quote her almost verbatim: "In here, I am your higher power, I am your God." Was she still running the show in your time? She had full knowledge of the physical abuse going on in Straight, Milford. I've had no luck tracking her down over the years, but I'd love to find her. She is as guilty as the abusers in Straight.

I would PM you, but I can't get my old account to work. Still, I'd love to do E-mail sometime.

Richard

Richard,

I was in there (1983)when you came to KHK and remember even car-pooling to Centerville when you hit second phase. I now live just a couple of miles from where you lived in Centerville.

Sorry that I haven't been blowing my horn in protest but two jobs, two kids, dog obedience training and a band keep my away from my fornits addiction that I acquired a while back.

I also have similar views to why our numbers are so few compared to the straightlings. Although, there is one more thing. KHK  back then was smaller (much) than Milford so the success rate was considerably higher. When that is the case then you have less people carrying it with them so heavily twenty years later. The graduates either were brainwashed for good and they remain programmed to this day, or returned to normalcy within a few years like myself or are too busy to go hunting for something like this.

I found it unhealthy for a while especially hanging around in the straight forums. I would dig up all those old memories and it would completely change my mood and demeanor around the house. The last thing my kids need is grumpy dad b/c he's digging up the past and getting angry about it. It's good to check back in though and catch posts from you and see that there is still some life here.

Keep me posted of future protests as I'm about 90 minutes away.

To remember Staff:

John Poole was the most senior of staff with his little "fuck" buddy Anne and they dished out all sorts of drama in fucked up raps. Big Ben was another Sr. Staffer and I remember Scott Hi as well. There was Kelly (with Farrah Hair) Shit, I was on Jr. Staff training but was smart and split after my 6 mo. was up. When I was training I found out about all the staff that were totally full of shit, banging each other in the offices and doing drugs after school.....it was stupid so I split and decided to rejoin a band since they took that a way for a year of my life.

Kathy Balinger was an evil being and was present for some of the more serious raps as well as tormenting the daily kid who wouldn't budge.......I remember this for Richard......it was not pretty.

I'll check in from time to time.

Stay in touch if you can.

John

John:

Good to hear from you. I would like to find Balinger, but she's out of reach because of spelling errors. Do you remember the exact spelling of her name? If I could get that somehow, it would be easy to track her down via search engines or white pages. It would be good to find her (assuming she's still alive), as her capacity for deception, coercion, and psychological abuse was notable, and she should have to answer for her abuses of power. Also, as I've stated many times on this forum, she had full knowledge of the physical abuse in Milford and elsewhere, which makes her equally guilty. You remember how Straight was used as an intimate psychological weapon against noncompliance? We were always just one step away from getting shipped to Milford, where they'd bloody our faces. She exploited this advantage to the fullest. I'd like to target whatever professional situation she is in, aiming for her peers. Even if they don't believe a word about her former incarnation, it would be justice enough to let her know that people are out there who haven't forgotten. But I think I could hit her much harder than that. We'll see. I need the correct spelling of her name first.

Again, to clarify my stance on the lack of KHK people. In Straight, physical abuse was built into the protocol. In KHK, on the other hand, physical abuse was a spontaneous byproduct of the same system of coercive persuasion as Straight. The creators of KHK decided to form a new program in which physical abuse was not necessarily a daily thing. Therefore, the frequency of physical abuse was significantly less visible, and this is why I believe less KHK people are vocal today. Otherwise, Straight and KHK were/are identical. And remember, the very fact that so-called professionals decided to form KHK, a program based in almost every way on a very destructive system, is telling. Imagine being a professional concerned with teenage drug use and choosing as your model a program that beats, starves, and psychologically rapes children. Why would you even choose this as your model? It's telling, and damning.

Another thing. Did you know that a Zumbiel is on the board of KHK? Robert Zumbiel? Is he the father of the Zumbiel brothers, or one of the Zumbiel brothers himself? The oldest Zumbiel infuriated me. How anyone over the age of eighteen could choose to remain in KHK, regardless of familial consequences, inspired my heartfelt contempt at the time. And still does. Rotting on the pews, I would have given anything to walk freely, without obstruction, into the Hebron wilderness. And people like him had the chance and squandered that freedom for voluntary mental abuse.

So many names. If I get to Milford again, you should take a ride up there with me. There are always potential intakes, and protest will lessen them, if nothing else. I'll E-mail you sometime.

Richard and whoever else... if you go to the KY Sec of State website, business services, organization search, type in Tristate drug rehabilitation and counseling program inc, you'll come up with this:

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info, but I'm afraid it's the same dead-end I keep coming to in Internet searches. Her name is Kathy or Cathy, and I've tried every variation possible including full names. Patricia Belanger, probably the same person here, is still on the board of KHK. I've studied her picture on the Belanger Group Website, and it's not the person I'm looking for. However, the woman I'm searching for could be related to Roger Belanger. Examining Roger might lead somewhere. Marriage could be road-blocking this endeavor also, although anyone as megalomaniacal as her would at least use a hyphen to keep her last name in the bargain.

Richard,
She was apparently before my time, but did ye try Katherine or Catherine?
Just wondering...
If I find anything I will surely let ye know.
Screenplay is closer to being finished by the way, just thought ye should know since ye indicated that ye liked my writing.

Was she an RN?

Or could this be her?

I don't remember a Kathy Balinger.  I worked at KHK from its start until about 1982 or 1983.  My parents are Pat and Roger Belanger, and Pat would not be the person referenced in this thread.  I would be happy to ask my mother about a Kathy Balinger and see what she says, if it helps.

I have a some questions, the answers of which would help fill in some gaps...

Do you know if there was a lawyer from Cincinatti (Castellini) who was working on or closely with the Board of Directors?
What was Dr. Katkin's role and why did he leave?
Did you ever see George Ross in group? Penny Walker? What about Miller Newton?
Is there any documentation you can provide to help solve these and other questions?

I only have copies of the corporate docs, some program materials, newsletters, 2 MI's, one RSA and a copy of one fee recovery court case from near that time frame. I would love to acquire more if they are available.
