I suspect people will have more to say about the political background of this tragic event...perhaps this thread should be moved to Tacitus' Realm.

yes but moving it would then imply that this discussion is about the politics of it, rather then just having it be an open discussion about the day/event, which was probably the posters intention.  just my .039894 cents.

Yeah that thought occurred... It was the paragraph that included "religious fundamentalism" and "war and death and destruction" plus my response to it that caused me to consider the suggestion...but I think it's fine here after all.

///To this day, I still have not seen the footage of people jumping out of the buildings. By the time I tuned in, that stuff had been pulled off the air. ///

The history channel has a documentary on that day that shows this footage. It still chokes me up when I see it. It was at that point, on that day, I broke down and cried.

Just remembered this:

On this subject - I ran across this bit of 9-11 tape [a while back] I thought I'd share it with any of you who feel up to watching it. I consider it a tribute to the man; and indeed all those who have died at the hands of those who seek our destruction. We should not forget just what a terrible thing we are dealing with.

I was scrambling for grocery money, looking around the house for items with money back guarantee and saved receipts. Found something good for $35. Somewhere in the middle of that rather pressing business, my then 8yo daughter caught onto the news. We didn't really have time for that bullshit. Ambrose Bierce came to mind; "War is God's way of teaching geography to Americans. My main thought before leaving the house was "well, I guess it finally happened, maybe now people will pay some damned attention to international policy." After finding the streets empty like I hadn't seen since Christmas sometime in the early `70s and the few people who were outside or at work in a state of total shock and awe, I though "Nah, probably not." and went back home to cook some cheap assed food for dinner.

I'm thinking not so much about where I was that day, but about what went on yesterday, on the 6th anniversary. It was pretty much another Tuesday unless you turned on the TV.

I pretty much forgot 9/11 was coming up until last weekend. When I woke up yesterday, I thought about putting up my flag, but I couldn't find the damn flag in my messy garage. As I got in the car to go to work, I noticed none of my neighbors had flags flying either, so I felt better about not being the only one who didn't exactly remember or commemorate the day.

Then I read something on a news site about how we Americans seem to have forgotten this event, and how the signs around the Freedom Tower construction site talk about all the square footage of office space that will be created, 'cause after all, it's all about the real estate. And about how we so completely cleaned up and sanitized the site that if you didn't know better, you'd swear that nothing had ever happened, that nothing had ever been there before.

And somewhere on the chain-link fence that surrounds the site is a sign with the names of all the victims, in tiny print that you can hardly read.

I was getting ready to go to bed. All of my friends thought it was some elaborate war of the worlds style prank.
I can not imagine any job worse than being the 911 lady who had to try and calm those people in their final moments.

They were right about it being some kind of war of the worlds style prank? Please do tell what you mean exactly by this statement.
Do you think that the planes were being flown by Americans under the control of the government to create some kind of diversion? Or maybe there were no planes at all and all the people in NYC that actually SAW what was happening were just paid actors doing their job and all that film footage that was broadcast all over the world was just some really good cut and paste job. Maybe there were bombs in those buildings placed there by the members of congress to upset and confuse us so we would no longer question our president.

 Pleeeeease!

I lost a very good friend that day that happened to be on one of those planes. I have heard with my own ears one of the tapes that has not been released to the public so when you say this was some kind of prank, you insult all the lives that were lost that day.

If the govt. had anything to do with it they would of taken advantage of it better. They would of not waited a couple months to attack afghanistan and wouldn't have waited two years to attack Iraq. If the US govt. new about 9.11 and cynically wanted to take advantage of it for foreign policy reasons they sure did a horrible job. They could of attacked all the countries they wanted, basically done whatever they want the month after 9.11 instead they waited six years before contemplating taking on Iran.. some conspiracy.

I personally don't think the government had anything to do with 9/11, but it wouldn't surprise me if they have good reason to keep Osama alive, whether he is actually still breathing or not. He is much more valuable alive and on the loose, as a rallying cry for the so-called War on Terror, than he could ever be as a captive or a corpse.

Yeah, he supposedly released some video last week, but how do we know who made it and whether it's really current sound & images of him, or some digitally doctored old footage? We all know how easy it is to completely fabricate video these days and put anything or anyone you want together in what looks like the same space & time, and make it look totally real.

Guest you are quite obviously retarded, so I commend you for typing anything remotely coherent .  It took from August 1990 until February 1991 to get enough force together to kick the shit out of the Great Romance Writer the first time.  For the Warpigs to roll through Afghanistan by Christmas in 2001 was at least as impressive as the Russian invasion in '79.  They didn't wait six years to contemplate taking on Iran, there have been Special Forces operating in Iran for at least three years and a bombing plan has been fermenting for just as long.  A determination to invade Iraq using the Sept. 2001 attacks as a pretext was made by the current gangsters in Washington within days.  It's not a conspiracy, it's called history.  Get someone to read it to you.

Hmmm. He should be more discrete with his desparate need/attempt to gain acceptance from the white boys. It's pathetically obvious... remember the kid that went around kissin ass and humoring the in crowd to gain favor. Always felt bad/embarrassed for those ones.
