About layoffs...

I heard today that at least one former HLA employee who was laid off was refused unemployment benefits because HLA has not paid its unemployment insurance since last August.

This is a serious matter because HLA deducts this money fom employees' checks every week.  Looks like they've just been pocketing it.

I also heard that HLA has not paid any taxes (payroll taxes, unemployment taxes, etc) since August of 2006.

It won't be long now...

With this in mind I wonder if it wouldn't be worth looking into exactly where all of those mandatory charitiable donations from the staff have really been going.  Charity or someones pocket?

As recent as last week they were still expelling students from HLA and insisting that they be housed at RC while parents arrange for future placement.

Let's put it this way; from the time the mandatory pay cut in November to the around December 10th, all but 3 of the instructors and 1 counselor left.  With all of the instructors bailing, some of whom had to retain legal counsel to get their final pay, unless the shleps that are left are in the babysitting service, I can't see how RC is still operating.  It's possible, just not too likely.

Considering the facilty I work for was on the receiving end of a RC referral I must assume that they are in "babysitting" mode. They were operational within the past two weeks.

I can't claim surprise at that what's left of the RC staff is being used to babysit.  It's the culture Buch dictated.  Every weekend RC staff was babysitting the "hold overs" from HLA waiting for the next RC class to start or for an escort service to come pick the kid(s) up and take them to their next destination.
