Personally, I think the documentary done by Monty (SELF MEDICATED) has a better chance of being seen by the public either on the big screen, television or DVD. The French Documentary reminds me of the A&E one and also, Dateline and 48 Hours. All well done but all focusing on the "controversy" which is why viewers, however shocked they may be, aren't shocked enough to do anything about this issue because it is seen as being a LAST RESORT.
Second, it must be noted that until it's illegal for parents to kidnap their kids and ship them out the country, there is nothing to stop parents for excercising their PARENTAL RIGHTS to raise their kids any way (and anywhere) they choose, as long as it's legal.
Those who disagree are forced to go to court and persuade a judge to remove a kid based primarily on custody disagreements and/or disputes as to whether a child is at risk of maltreatment due to an existing medical condition, etc.
Frankly, I think the documentary should be seen in the U.S. but don't have high hopes we'll see the kind of outrage generated by other nations. You have to remember, this is America where kids as young as 12-13 years old can be tried in adult court and sentenced to LIFE IN PRISON WITH NO POSSIBILTY OF PAROLE. That is barbaric.
Only last year did the supreme court rule against the practice of executing people who committed their crimes while still a juvenile.
The problem is systemic. It's how we look at children who can not (or will not) behave in accordance to society's rules. Those who come in contact with the justice system are disposed of while others who have committed no crime but back talk their parents, have sex, drink, etc., are disposed of into these programs.
THROWAWAY KIDS. Not illegal ... just immmoral.
