Taking over the world
You guys actually had raps like that?? That is scary. I guess that was just more of a background thought that everyone was led to believe. People used to say things like "well so and so could use the program" all the way from Sadaam Hussein to the local paper boy who was late every day at your house.

A funny thing happened while we were moving where my girlfriends 12 year old daughter found an old pipe in a box and FREAKED OUT. She is a DARE graduate and it was amazing how well (sic) it actually works on these kids. She instantly looked at her mother and I as hard core druggies and that we were completely evil and bad. I barely smoke pot at all anymore since it's just plain inconvienient in my life. You could definately see Betty's influence in the way she reacted and it really scared both of us at how this girl is about to go into the high school and then everything she's learned at DARE is going to be questioned in her mind. When her best friends experiment and turn into "Hard Core Druggies" then what is she going to do? That's a position that I've read is the worst part about DARE is that it creates a social rift with drug abuse rather than being an educational experience.

I'm suprised they don't use the term druggie friend etc.. Who knows maybe they did.

Tattoos
Actually, they finally legalized them again up here. A bunch of the local piercing shops now offer tattoos. The owners need to take anatomy 101 at an accredited college and go through a basic state inspection and they're all set. I was pretty psyched to see that. MA is full of religious based blue laws. Remember when it was illegal to work on Sundays when we were kids. Still can't go to the liquor store on a Sunday unless it's the holiday season (I guess it's ok to drink on Sundays at Christmas) Do you remember when Kitty Dukakis drank rubbing alcohol on a Sunday. She ended up in the hospital. Some towns are still pretty backwards, in Stoneham you can't drink standing up at the bar you have to be sitting and you have to eat if you have 2 drinks or more. Smoking is pretty much non existent in all the bars except for a few cities that refuse to let the smoke nazi's get to them.

But I still won't drink my tap water no matter how safe they tell me it is. It's disgusting. You could fill your pool with it and wouldn't even need to add shock it has so much chlorine.

Hollywood
I honestly feel bad for Robert. This poor fuck has to sit there and be the poster child for drug abuse and the only reason why is because he's a celebrity. If he was just some nobody, absolutely noone would care that he was in a hotel room with an ounce of coke and a blow up doll. Same thing with Strawberry, he's a crack head with the world watching him. The only reason why Downey Jr. got caught was because some faggot sounding papa razzi loving asshole (did you hear the tape??) figured it would make him famous or at least wealthy. I'm glad there was a protest because this whole thing with him makes me sick. I guess that's the price you pay to be famous but the way he's been treated is absolutely riciculous. I always say to my girlfriend that they should just let the poor bastard go and live his own life. The sad truth is that a story about him relapsing or what not get's the "eyeballs" watching the screen and that's really what it comes down to is how many "eyeballs" are watching the screen at once.

I'm sorry but this thing with him has always bothered me and needs to be stopped.

Websites and Cheesecake
Well, I lied. I guess it's going to be a bit longer than this afternoon since my street seems to be missing a certain box on the telephone pole. So we will wait and see when the almighty AT&T decides to hook me up with a descent connection.

As for your visit up here Sully, I'll definately be around both of those days. We could even take a swing by that other restaurant I mentioned to you in Burlington and see what kind of trouble we can get into. That would be a trip.

See ya,

My Website...
has been down for a little while but should be back up this afternoon. We moved and AT&T should be here later on today to hook me back up. I'll post the new link to the board once it's back up and running. I'm also thinking about moving the entire site to a 3'rd party hosting company that I work with so that it'll be more reliable as Mediaone isn't the most stable service I've seen but we'll see.

I'll check back in later on.

If you could ask Newton or Semblers or whoever 1 question?
I agree that it would be a complete runaround answer from them. These people felt, feel, and will feel justified that what they did was right and that we basically deserved it. I think they truly feel that they have found the answer to the worlds drug problems but if it wasn't for those damn abuse laws, they'd be able to cure the universe of all it's evils.

I wonder sometimes who brainwashed the brainwasher's, was it Art Barker? Chuck Dedrich? even further back?

I wouldn't bother asking them anything because I already know the answer. Now if the question was what would you physically do to some of these people if you had the chance....

hmm.......

Re: Atlanta, GA Straight, Inc...Anyone left saved from suici
Brian,

I wasn't in Atlanta but I was in Boston from 89-91. They booted a kid out of our group and sent him down there he might have been in around the same time as you. His name was Josh M. he was from Massachusetts. Real nice kid he just wasn't too happy being there. I'll send you his last name in an email if you don't recognize him right off the bat. But I'm almost positive you were there at the same time.

Let me know if you know him.

DARE kicked out of NH School
I was in NH yesterday and read an article about how the Portsmouth NH school system is getting rid of DARE and switching to a longer (3 year) program called Life Skills. Has anyone ever heard of this program? New Hampshire is a major critic of DARE from other articles I've read. There are even investigations regarding fraud in some towns. I'm going to poke around and see what I can find.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / still supporting straight...

Re: still supporting straight...
Sully and all,

That's too bad about your mom, like you and I discussed on a few occasions I'm in the same boat. I gave up trying to talk to my mother about it years ago. She made a comment like if she had to do it all over again, she would and it practically broke me. Like others have said, it's almost too much of a mistake for parents too handle. I've also never really told her or my father what went on there, I think it would be almost hurtful and I just don't have the balls to do it. Remember when my father was asking you if Straight helped etc.. he's starting to see what went on and like he said he spent ALOT of time and money on the whole thing. That probably pisses him off the most about the whole experience.

This past weekend the whole thing sort of came up at a family get together. I'm not really comfortable around my mom at all and most of my family knows it. There's just a built in tension that can be seen by everyone in the room. Denise (my girlfriend) got really upset at a comment that my brother in law made about how the problems between my mother and I are pretty much my fault or "self induced". It goes to show you how people just take the attitude like we should just get over it or whatever but the whole thing got me thinking. Would you tell a rape or molestation victim to just get over it? It's easier for my family to just basically deny that anything bad happened than to really sit down and think about it. I tell Denise that it would take 25 months for me to explain the whole thing to people because, for the most part,  unless you've lived it you just don't get it.

Hopefully one of these days I'll get the guts to just point my mom to Wes's site or something like that. For now I just think that it would be almost mean. Eventually I will, it's just a matter of time. Although it's probably not the right thing, not bringing it up has been the easiest thing for me to do.

Take care,

Scott

A funny dream...
Unfortanately, I've had dreams along the same lines as you as I'm sure alot of people around the world have. They usually revolve around the coming war and Arabs.

This however was different. It was actually a relief from the other types of negative dreams that come.

I guess you had to be there.

A funny dream I had last night...
I was back in group and then somehow managed to escape. Then Slim Shady (eminem), who had been intaked and also escaped, stole a plane and  crashed it into the building.

I was chuckling to myself when I woke up.

I think I need to stop watching the news.

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / Interesting Message on Elan Board
« on: May 01, 2001, 02:59:14 PM »
I recently recieved a phone call from a local contractor who I have done buisness with over the years. He was called by Elan to evaluate/repair a variety of problems throughout the complex. He could not believe the condition of the facility explaining its run down condition, and comparing it to a shanty town. This was no surprise to me as I have recieved many calls over the years from contractor friends seeking payment for services at Elan, thinking perhaps I had some pull with Joe, which we know is nonsense.

After a brief conversation with my only remaining friend still working at Elan, I learned that the Poland complex need for repair exceeds the value of the property. This coupled with a score of existing liens from suppliers and contractors seeking payment has the Poland property stalled in court. The real estate industry calls this type of property a White Elephant.

This has already effected the resident population as parents who visit expect better conditions for thier 50K. It was trendy to get well in log cabins in the 1970s, but not in the 00s when you market yourself as a private school for college bound kids.

Factor into this the incredibly bad press Elan has absorbed of late, and there you have a real mess.

I expect a slow demise for the Elan School. The gross mismanagment of the facility on a buisiness level has them ankle deep in red ink. I predict that Elan will slowly gear down toward a scheduled date to close. The current owners will liquidate everything and retire. They are at that age, and all of them deserving. Sharon has to be spent from twenty years of running the entire operation and maintaining a relationship with Joe. Jeffrey has upward of thirty years into Elan and is in my opinion one of the few decent directors. Marty was/is the only regional director to have run all facilities at a time when the resident/staff population was at its highest. The program nose dived with him gone in the 80s.

I clearly see the three of them leaving Elan in the next few years, closing the school and selling the property.

Thanks, John
