Why's Dr. Bernie Still on Payroll at Whitmore?
« on: May 11, 2005, 08:52:00 PM »
The Sudweeks say they "are no longer in the teen help business" ---so why is their highly publicized PhD, Dr. Bernie Farrow still on the payroll?

And why's Dr. Bernie running an ad on Struggling Teens trying to recruit students from CEDU?

This make sense to anyone?

Why pay this guy if there's to be no therapy?

Why advertise for a population of students that NEED therapy---if none is to be offered?

Sounds like a very good question for Ken Stettler. Whitmore needs to be licensed and regulated, OR CLOSED DOWN!!!!

I'm wondering if anyone has started a class action suit, if anyone has been abused at either school.  And I'm wondering who really had degrees at Cascade, like MSW degree or a school counselor degree?  Just curious....87 grad

Cheryl Sudweeks thrives on GROUP GROUP GROUP. No one, not even Ken Stettler can stop her marathon all night Group Sessions. The woman thinks SHE'S a therapist---and will not give that up!

What is Dr. Farrow's background in the teen help industry?  This name sounds very familiar.

He worked at Cedar Mountain Academy, and was let go because of "credential problems." Seems Sue Scheff was referring there. Can "read all about it" in the WWASP v PURE transcript where it seems Ms. Scheff was "all confused" and thought "DR" Bernie was an MD. Well, he was called "doctor" right????? Now he's at Whitmore, and there they call him a "school counselor" now that Whitmore and Mark Sudweeks claim they are out of the teen help business and that NO THERAPY goes on at the Whitmore any longer. Hmmmmm...... Rumor is "DR" Bernie's PhD is the mail order type. Perhaps that is being checked out. MOUSE posted a few weeks ago that "DR" Bernie has his wall practically covered in Diplomas, and MOUSE seems to know just about everything that goes on at the Whit, so that is probably true.

Is there a link to the WWASPS v. PURE documents that discloses which programs PURE refers to and how much they pay for referrals?

Page 379 of WWASP v PURE Transcript:

Sue Scheff states: "...at the time I thought it was doctor MD."

The attorney asks, "That was a MISTAKE you made about the DIRECTOR of a program your were REFERRING to?"

Scheff: "Yes."

This "DR" Bernie reportedly works at the Whitmore Academy, and Sue Scheff appears to still support the Sudweeks and this place? Amazing.

Sheesh ... if this isn't a classic example of what happens when parents get into the business of helping other parents, I don't know what is.

And make no mistake, PURE is a business.

Why doesn't it appear that PURE is standing behind these parents now? Why the support to the owner that is charged with abusing the kids that PURE referred to the Whitmore? What happened to "parents helping parents?"

State investigates boarding school in Nephi

By Kirsten Stewart
The Salt Lake Tribune

Even as Whitmore Academy owner Cheryl Sudweeks contests charges of child abuse, state officials are investigating new abuse allegations at the Juab County boarding school.
Neither state nor county attorneys would discuss the precise nature of the ongoing probe.
But Sudweeks' lawyer Jim Merrell confirmed the investigation.
"They're pulling out all the stops to find some way to find as many chinks in my client's armor as possible. They've been investigating these kinds of things for months and months now. I'd be surprised if anything came from it," said Merrell.
Sudweeks appeared Thursday in Nephi's 4th District Court for a preliminary hearing on misdemeanor child abuse charges stemming from a two-year investigation allegedly involving students enrolled at the school in 2003 and 2004. She has filed a written plea of not guilty to all seven counts of abuse and hazing.
Juab County Attorney Jared Eldridge motioned to have Sudweeks barred from direct or indirect contact with the alleged victims and any juveniles under the age of 18 now in her care.
Fourth District Judge Donald J. Eyre granted the no-contact order for the alleged victims, but did not address Eldridge's latter request.
Eyre then recused himself from the case because he is an ecclesiastical leader in unit of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to which the Sudweeks belong. The case was reassigned to Judge Lynn W. Davis, who has yet to schedule the next hearing.
Whitmore is not currently licensed by state officials as required under a new law. Inspectors want to bring it under regulation, arguing it qualifies as a therapeutic facility, but the school is fighting that designation.
Regulators are still drafting the new therapeutic rules, however, and Licensing Director Ken Stettler says, "We have to give people the opportunity to comply with them before we can order an injunction."
Whitmore - which has about 32 students, ages 12 to 17, and is located in a historic mansion on Nephi's Main Street - also was recently cited with numerous fire code violations.
In addition, three students ran away from the school in June. Parents of the three runaways, at least two of whom were retrieved and shipped home, believe the boys were assisted by school critic Joyce Harris of San Antonio, whose daughter allegedly suffered abuse at Whitmore in 2004. Harris denies the allegation and says a Whitmore employee facilitated their exodus.

It appears key that inspectors argue that Whitmore "...qualifies as a therapeutic facility, but the school is fighting that designation." Mr. Ken Stettler seems to be giving the Sudweeks ample opportunity to comply with the new law before ordering any injunction. Why not simply comply?
