They were projecting... they still are. Back then, it was the parents (okay, some of them) who were smoking dope in the 60's, hell bent on atoning for their sins thru their children... and religion. Now it's become a hybrid Munchausen's syndrome / Status symbol. These poor parents (figuratively speaking) have had their LIVES disrupted by these horrible children. Those poor dears! And from such a fine, upstanding family! It's almost cool to have a "kid in rehab" these days.
