Weekends for Newcomers
« on: January 30, 2005, 09:48:00 AM »
Hey DC, or anyone who knows now or remembers:

What do newcomers do on the weekends in their host homes?  I've been trying to remember myself, but I'm drawing a blank here.  I just remember the things we couldn't do:  leave the house (or even go outside), watch TV listen to music, read, etc.  We couldn't even assist in cleanup after meals because we weren't allowed in the kitchen, and we weren't allowed to touch cleaning supplies.

You can only write so many MIs and talk about your "druggie past" so many hours a day.  What else do you do?

Depends, were there just you and oldcommer,or was there six or eight kids around?
We would just sit around and chat while the mommies would gossip and such like a tupperware party.ONLY ONE doughnut for you,now sit THERE and dont move,do you like glazed or jelly filled?

I used to chat with them politely about how I felt that I did not belong in there, and they really felt offended about that as if I was throwing their precious gift in the trash. The oldcommer dad got so pissed off that he dragged me by my hair out of his car in the parking lot after group and tossed me to another family.

It was MIKE ZUPPARDO's dad (uncle) that dragged me out of the car(LIFE program).MIKE ZUPPARDO later had a hair salon in south Sarasota.

Well, you were throwing their precious gift in the trash!

That Mike Z. guy sounds familiar - wasn't he one of the founders or something - or his father?

Cleaning and coloring.  Neither of which inspired me to want to lead a "straight" life.  When I had to stay at the Rez, we had to clean there too but then you spent hours just sitting and wishing it were time to go to the building to break up the monotony and that was the only time that I ever wished to go to the building.  Although I did hate Sundays because of Susan and Jeff Crandall would be there to confront everyone and make the entire day miserable.

Glad I missed the Rez years.  Sounds like the rules were different than in the host homes.

Be glad that you missed the rez years.  It was run by oldcomers with a host "parent" who basically slept there and set the alarm.  But you were at the mercy of the oldcomer who was usually someone pissed off that they were stuck at the rez with their same clothes for days and no toothbrush.  That pissed me off when I would have to stay at the rez on a school night and have to go to school wearing the clothes that I wore the day before.  Talk about feeling like an outcast when kids at school would notice that you had the same thing on unwashed for a couple of days.  And if you complained you would end up at the rez for several nights and your clothes would get stuck in the clothing area waiting to be searched.  I know that staff did that shit on purpose because I remember them talking about it when I was on staff.  It was that kind of vindictive bullshit that just made no sense to me.
