Cenikor founded at the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City. Former prisoners and addicts begin a peer-centered therapeutic community with strict rules and guidelines. Those in the program pledge to direct and support each other to change bad behavior.
1968
Cenikor's current president, Ed Fresquez, becomes a part of the program after leaving prison. Many people he knows also want to change and they get involved as well.
The idea of people helping people through role modeling, self policing and having ownership in the program becomes the tenet for Cenikor's long-term, residential chemical dependency treatment program.
1969
Cenikor outgrows its first Lakewood location and buys a two-story building known as "Mother's Bakery" right around the corner from the first small home. Work is done by the residents to turn the building into a proper residence.
Throughout the years, Cenikor residents have done all renovations themselves, saving on labor costs and also teaching valuable skills.
2004
Cenikor celebrates its 35th anniversary.
