ALA Goes European?
« on: May 24, 2004, 07:57:00 PM »
Okay, the way I read this program is they offer a Phase I in Mexico,a Phase II in the Czech Republic, and a Phase III in St. George, Utah. Personally, I would not enroll my child in any program that equates normal teenage behavior with "entitlementitis" (see their website for definition of this term).  Second, with all that is going on in the world, the last thing I would want is my teenager to be traveling throughout Eastern Europe spreading the gospel. There are plenty of Christian-based youth groups that teens can participate in right here in the good ole' USA.  How many other faith-based boarding schools are sending kids out of the U.S. on missions as part of their education?

Karen, given the anti-American anti-Christian sentiment in the world right now, I'm curious if you have an opinion on whether it's a good idea for American teens to be traveling in Eastern Europe preaching the gospel? Personally, I think there is a case to be made for keeping these teens in the U.S. where there are plenty of opportunities for them to complete their missionary work right in their own backyard (UTAH).

Well, I am pretty sure the kids aren't going to be preaching the gospel. I believe it will be more of a service type of outreach, similar to Bridges for Peace in Jerusalem.
They do no preaching; they just provide goods and service to Israeli families; for the love of Christ.
Personally, I am opposed to going into Europe.

Karen, would you happen to know how common it is for church or faith-based programs to set up programs outside the United States? It would be interesting to know how common (or uncommon) this is.  Second, what percentage of the population in St. George is Mormon and do you know if any Mormons work for ALA?  I'm curious as to how the Mormons feel about the allegations of abuse leveled against Mormon owned and operated youth programs, particularly since with nearly 200 programs operating in the state, these program are a goldmine for steady employment.

I can't answer any of your questions because I don't know; except one. No Mormons work for ALA.
ALA is a Christian Program; meaning, for the purpose of your question; they do not believe Jospheh Smith was a prophet or that any of his writtings are inspired by God or that any of those who came after him are prophets.
They believe the Mormon idea of personal divinity to be a diobolical lie.
As a result, I imagain a praticing Mormon would be uncomfortable at ALA; and likely not allowed by the LDS to work there.
I honestly have no idea about any of the other questions.

Thanks Deborah and Karen, this is actually a very interesting topic in that it appears many of these programs are owned and operated by Mormons, who are not exactly known for tolerating disobedience (defiance) in their own children's attitude and behavior.  Has anyone ever studied this issue, and if so, published an opinion about their findings?

Some interesting dialogue:

And depending on how deeply you want to get into the issue, here's a link with info scattered throughout concerning the high incidence of depression and prescription meds in Utah- "Prozac Capital" of the nation. Appears that children and unhappy housewives are perhaps being overly medicated in Utah.

The man to keep an eye on in Utah. Could we say, might have a "mental illness" himself. One of illusions of granduer? God Complex? Or is he just plain evil?
Commentary from an indivdual who will remain anonymous.

The psychiatrist you inquire about is Paul Wender, M.D., at the University of Utah.  It seems to have been his life's work to chemically lobotomize the children of the members of The Church of Latter Day Saints, better known as the "Mormons."  He has also pushed Ritalin and the amphetamines internationally as a "solution," presumably for normal children who are or may potentially be too active for him or certain others.

Wender Utah Rating Scale

Donald Klein, M.D., and Paul Wender, M.D. (founders of the National Assn. for Depressive Illness)
http://www.pendulum.org/books/books_mood_depress.html

Wender did his residency in adult psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC.  He trained in child psychiatry Johns Hopkins Hospital.  In this evolution, he entered the inner circle of social engineers and chose his place and work among the religious people of Utah.
Wender Bio
http://research.mclean.org/bio/pwender/

The work of Wender becomes significant when it is realized that the Mormons have been called "the most dangerous cult in America" by the leadership of the American Psychiatric Association.  There is ample reason for this:  They are a large, powerful, moral (meaning they
have a firm grasp of what traditionally constitutes right and wrong behavior and work for the good), family oriented group which works
together as a group to bring about a better society.  For that alone, they are seen and targeted by the  psychiatrists as a group to be
crushed but to further compound their "offenses," as a religion, they "proselytize."

In spite of the fact that the LDS Church has not attacked psychiatry, they are seen as a threat to psychiatry and to the basic "there is no
right or wrong, if it feels good do it," destructive and disruptive "humanistic science" approach of psychiatric plans and programs.  He is one of the "better living through chemistry" boys who will tolerate no religious or spiritual-philosophic approach to difficulties of man.

Make no mistake about this fact: Ritalin (methylphenidate) does and is intended to do brain damage.  This has traditionally been the
approach of psychiatry to the brains of mankind: cut it, shock it chemically, burn it or otherwise destroy, or kill it.

The fact of chemically induced brain damage has been well known in psychiatric circles for some time.  Recent studies using brain imaging
devices confirm this and put the average, overall "shrinkage" of the brains of children after one and one-half to three years on Ritalin
at ten percent.

This became all the more significant when it was learned that most of this damage is centered in the "frontal lobes, the back of the
cerebellum and to the hippocampus (the motion center)."

Thus the erratic if not somewhat disabled later function, appearance and behavior of such children as children and as teens and later as
adults.

Thus as well, the pandemics of epilepsy and Tourette's Syndrome, to say nothing of the pandemics of child suicide wherever Ritalin has
been in heavy use.  This is what accounts as well for the high incidence of these disabilities in Utah, Idaho and Nevada, the three States where Paul Wender, the international guru of Ritalin and amphetamine use on children, concentrated his hunt for the children of the Mormon Church with his so-called studies.  These areas have actually led the world with these catastrophes among their children.

CIBA, the manufacturer of Ritalin and one of, if not the largest chemical manufacturers of brain damaging drugs for children on Earth, is well aware of the damage their drugs do and has been
funding "research" it has designed to shift the cause of the now visible (using modern brain imaging devices) brain damage to children
from the chemicals to the "labels" created by Paul Wender and others such as "attention deficit disorder (ADD)" and "attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD)."  Failing this shift of attention and lots of backup from the criminal elements within the psychiatric and psychological white collar labor unions, the damages claims could be the largest in the history of the United States, even larger than those for tobacco.  After all, the children were all involuntarily treated, parental consent has been a joke and there were no warnings, early or late while the manufacturers have been busily hiding their crimes.

However, they have yet to produce the first child on Earth with the Ritalin specific stereotypical pattern of brain damage who has not been on Ritalin or one of the amphetamines (which apparently serve as well for their brain shrinking purposes) for at least eighteen months
to three years.

I have personally questioned those who did the original "studies" at Woodshole Psychiatric Institute in New York, at Harvard in
Massachusetts and at Stanford University in California.  When I asked them if they had ever seen such brain shrinkage (damage) in children
who had not been on Ritalin, they all fled from the interviews (done on video cameras by the way).  It was obvious that they knew what they were doing and that they had been maliciously and for profit, falsifying "science" to secure those profits from the chemical cartels by hiding for them, the correct source of the brain anomalies now being seen in children and adults who had used their drugs.

It is very important indeed to the drug companies and to those totalitarian elements with whom they associate and who are hard at
work about the business of societal and population engineering, to set this false data associated with the "brain damaging effects of
ADD and ADHD" in place before the rest of us figure out what is actually causing the entire syndrome: Their prescription pharmaceuticals.

http://www.geocities.com/ppdsupportpage ... blues.html
But a solid contingent of physicians remain skeptical. Psychiatrist Paul Wender expresses a not uncommon attitude. "It's all garbage," he says of the panoply of alternative approaches. Solid scientific data supports the effectiveness of antidepressants and ECT to treat depression, he says, and until a similar body of evidence validates alternatives, he cautions against using unproved treatments. "We're not talking about treating depression the ordinary human emotion," he says. "We're talking about depression the potentially lethal disease."

In 1965, there were two major federal initiatives developed with funding from The Elementary and Secondary Education Act passed that year. One was the 1965-1969 Behavioral Science Teacher Education Program and the other was the publication by the government of "Pacesetters in Innovation", a 584-page catalogue of behavior modification programs to be used by the schools.

Let me repeat that: a catalogue of behavior modification programs! Are we talking about programs to indoctrinate children passing through the system to believe values contrary to those on which this nation was based.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/wallace/wallace127.html
I suppose Ritalin, an unnatural drug related to cocaine, is okay to place within children's brains because the State approves of it and has made it legal. Would parents approve if doctors prescribed coca leaves, which South American Indians have used for thousands of years with no ill effects? What's the difference, except one is legal and the other is not? Or that coca leaves are safer than Ritalin?
I'm sure that Rockefeller, et al didn't realize that the boredom and drudgery of public schools would ultimately lead to drug use ? legal and illegal ? so the kids could combat the ill effects of sitting and marching all day. There is also a massive drug problem in similar institutions, such as prisons and the military. Why can't the "experts" see these similarities? Maybe that old joke is true ? "ex" means "has-been" and "spurt" means "drip." Most "experts" are a bunch of has-been drips.

Wow, that's some interesting reading.  Thanks Deborah.  Regarding the now defunct Oregon-based wilderness program Obsidian Trails, click on the link below to read about the restraint death of Eddie Lee. No one was held accountable, as the Grand Jury did not find enough evidence to indict the counselor.

http://www.teenadvocatesusa.homestead.c ... hives.html

Personally, I have always believed ADD/ADHD to be bogus but even if I'm wrong, I still would not advocate drugging millions of kids (mostly boys) as the answer to "treating" kids who are hyper active or under motivated.

Yes, why is it that the majority of kids on Ritalin are boys?  Also, what is the relationship between Ritalin and Tourette's Syndrome?

Placement stemmed from Student's emotional and psychological difficulties- not for educational purposes. In cases where a child requires a residential purpose for medical as opposed to educational reasons, courts have held that school districts are not responsible for the cost of the residential placement. The IEP team determined that the Student was not a child with a disability. Specifically, they found that he did not have an emotional behavioral disability (EBD).

The Czech Republic? I spent a few years in Prague, they picked the right European country to open shop. The Czechs tend to turn a blind eye to child abuse, the best example being the abundant pre-teen hookers of Plzen and other less notable towns along the German border. Also, the Czech authorities are notoriously easy to bribe (European Union be damned!). I remember getting a boot on my car and instead of a ticket under my windshield wiper there was a cop's cellphone number scrawled on a napkin. Mind you, at $300 monthly salary they either go to bed crooked or hungry.

So let's say they do set up a franchise in CZ. Wasn't Moravia Academy summarily shut down by Embassy folks? Besides, it's a lot easier to get a "well supervised," possibly shackled kid through Mexican customs than it is in the EU. Well, you'd think, I haven't smuggled any abducted minors in a while.
