Warning Signs of a Potentially Abusive Behavioral Treatment Center

A Treatment Center May be Abusive if:

1.Verbal and/or written communication between the client and family members is prohibited, restricted or monitored.

2.The program requires the parents or client to sign a form releasing the program of liability in case of injury during treatment.

3.The program requests/demands legal custody of juvenile clients.

4.The program houses clients in foster homes or host homes instead of allowing them to reside with their parents.

5.The client or parents are forbidden from discussing the daily happenings at the facility. Often this policy is called ?confidentiality.?

6.The client is denied access to a telephone.

7.Client phone calls are monitored.

8.The program uses confrontational therapy.

9.The staff includes former clients of the program.

10.Clients are restrained or otherwise physically prevented from leaving the facility.

11.The program claims that self-injury or cutting/carving on ones body is normal behavior for a client in treatment.

12.Parents are not allowed to stay with their child during the entire intake/entry process.

13.The program inflicts physical punishments on clients such as exercising, running, food restrictions, and cleaning.

14.Reading materials are prohibited or restricted.

15.The facility does not have a clearly visible sign outside the building stating the name of the program.

16.Clients must submit ?chain of commands? or any other such requests for basic needs such as clothes, shoes, personal items and medical care.

17. The program is run or staffed by persons who lack adequate experience or credentials.

18.The program requires parents or siblings of clients to volunteer services and/or raise money for the facility.

19.A medical doctor (MD) is not present at any time during normal operating hours.

20.Clients of the program conduct, participate in or supervise the intake/entry process.

21.Staff members offer to help the parents obtain a court order forcing the client into the program.

22.Clients are observed on any level of the program, while bathing, dressing or using the toilet.

23.The purpose of the program is to treat drug abuse, but the program does not conduct a drug screen prior to entry.

24.The program requires clients to be strip-searched.

25.The program does not allow clients to follow their religion of choice.

26.Staff members must approve friends, siblings, family visits, or employment.

27.Juvenile clients are not afforded an education in accordance with state requirements.

28.Medication is recommended, prescribed, approved or dispensed by anyone other than a medical doctor (MD).

29.Staff members make statements such as ?your child will die without treatment? to the parents of prospective clients.

30.Clients escort/supervise other clients.

31.The program lists a post office box instead of a physical street address.

32.Clients have to ?earn? the right to speak during group sessions.

33.Clients are denied outside activities on any level/phase.

34.Staff must approve the withdrawal of clients from treatment.

35.The program expects total and unquestioned support of parents.

36.Clients on any phase/level are forbidden to speak to other clients.

ISAC will be adding to this list as necessary.

If you are a parent who is considering placing a child in a behavioral treatment facility, PLEASE protect your child. Thoroughly investigate the program and all staff members by contacting local news sources, conducting internet searches, and reviewing court and police records. Be sure to verify all licenses, certifications, and accreditations of the program.

Visit the facility BEFORE you enroll your child.

NEVER place your child in a program outside of the United States.

NEVER place your child in an unlicensed facility.

NEVER surrender custody of your child to a treatment center.

Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you recognize a mistake when you make it again.

Those who sharpen their axes and grind them often cut down the tree.

I've read numerous articles about the various WWASP programs. I've read about the staff member who was sodomizing and otherwise sexually assaulting children. I've read about Dundee Ranch and how the authorities closed it down for cruelty to children and other abuses. Whenever a WWASP leader is asked for a quote about the horrific charges against a facility they always seem to say that those who reported the abuse had "an axe to grind."
I've heard that the WWASP organization pays people to surf around to these web sites to discourage people from exposing their abuses and illegalities.  Perhaps all of you annons are being paid by them to twist the subjects around and to make blind and ignorant threats to citizens who are venting about the abuses at these programs.
The vast majority of American people do not know that this abuse is taking place. These programs that reprogam minds and values are much different than Nursing Homes, psychiatric hospitals and prisons.  Nursing Homes, hospitals and prisons are completely open to public criticism.  Show me a Nursing Home that doesn't allow unannonced visitors! Psych hospitals also allow visitors daily.  Patients are allowed to use the telephone any time of the day.  They have their rights posted in the dining room and at the nursing station. There are toll free numbers posted to report any elder or child abuse. All licensed professionals are under legal duty to report child and elder abuse. Prisoners also have more freedom than children in these programs. They can make phone calls every day. They can have anyone visit them once or twice a week.  They can also file law suits if their rights are severely violated.  Prisoneres have filed law suits because they were not given chuncky peanut butter.  Do any of these kids have the right to call a lawyer, the police, or Child Protective Services? What can they do when they are being BUTT FUCKED by perverted staff?  Nothing. There are no phones for them to use, their mail is censored (and if they refuse to allow staff to read their mail they are severely punished) They have no access to the Internet. If they violently try to escape, they are charged with felonies and thown in jail. Authorities don't believe their reports of abuse, often their parents don't either because their parents are also being programed to accept the punishments inflicted on their children. Soon they start to believe that the abuse is just a necessary part of the program. Parents must be aware of these RED FLAGS. The authorities must do more to protect vulnerable children from abuse. Parents who are truly demented enough to allow this type of abuse shoud be charged with child abuse, neglect and endangerment.  [ This Message was edited by: cherish wisdom on 2004-04-28 13:53 ]

Well gee, do you think parents might want to think about the POTENTIAL for abuse BEFORE they place their child in a restrictive, custodial and therefore, POTENTIALLY abusive school or program?

Nah, leave the poor parents alone.  They can not be expected to think, much less believe, that any of these reports of abusive practices could be partially their fault for LEAVING their teen vulnerable to abuse in the first place.

Can't talk to your residential kid because they have not "earned" the privilege?  That's PARENTAL child abuse.

Shame on all of you for leaving your children to fend for themselves while you, the parent, pretended to care so much about your child's emotional growth.

BULL-SHHHHHIT!

Like I said before, the waspies and PURE people here are a bunch of delusional shitty parents. They want to make excuses for wearhousing their kids in thought reform camps because they aren't up to the task of being a parent.

No one said it would be easy and no one said your kid would be perfect. Fixing them by brainwashing them in places with such bad repuations and countless accusations of abuse is irresponsible and downright abusive.

Wwaspies and Purees, you suck.

Sometimes I think parents need more education than the teens do.

Teens are SUPPOSED TO REBEL. Its how you learn to make your decisions, look out for yourself, and learn to fight for your own interests.

Parents that can't deal with that have no business having kids. Robot teenagers grow up into dependant (and abused) adults. LET THEM GROW.

DannyB on the internet:I CALLED A LAWYER TODAY TO SEE IF I COULD SUE YOUR ASSES FOR DOING THIS BUT THAT WAS NOT POSSIBLE.

CCMGirl on program restraints: "DON\'T TAZ ME BRO!!!!!"

TheWho on program survivors: "From where I sit I see all the anit-program[sic] people doing all the complaining and crying."
