KERRVILLE — A former cook at Pathways 3H Youth Ranch was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday and fined $6,000 after being convicted of indecency with a child for fondling a 14-year-old camper in 2010.

Testifying against the advice of his lawyer, defendant Helmut Feit, 62, denied the boy's claim that he groped the youth five or six times in vehicles at the Kerr County camp, which serves troubled teen boys.

A former executive chef at hotels, Feit also denied possessing child pornography, despite trial testimony that a computer seized from his Junction home held images of boys engaging in sexual activities.

Defense attorney Stephen Harpold, who asked the jury for probation, urged Feit to not testify, noting that he still faces four charges of indecency in Kerrville over complaints by the same victim, as well as 13 counts of possessing child pornography in Kimble County.

Prosecutor Lucy Wilke, who asked the jury to sentence Feit to 20 years, praised Pathways officials for alerting authorities to concerns about Feit.

Camp staffers became alarmed after discovering letters Feit sent the boy in which he expressed love and discussed adoption.

“Just remember that I'm never away from you as long as you keep me in your heart like I do yours in mine,” said a letter dated Oct, 6, 2010, and signed “Your Loving Dad.”

In another letter, Feit said he sensed the boy was uneasy when Feit rubbed the boy's tummy, which the youth described in court as a precursor to Feit fondling his genitals.

“I want you to know that we are a very loving, close family and believe in close and intimate physical contact,” Feit wrote.

This case actually hit the papers almost exactly a year ago ... when Feit was first arrested. Here's some coverage from back then:

Ex-camp cook faces sex charge in Kerr County

A former cook at a therapeutic wilderness camp for troubled boys in Kerr County was in the Kerr County Jail Monday on $100,000 bail, accused of indecency with a 14-year-old camper.

Junction resident Helmut R. Feit, 61, was fired from the Pathways Three H Youth Ranch in Mountain Home after staff found evidence of an improper relationship with the boy and contacted authorities, said camp administrator Skeet Wilbanks.

"It's a devastating incident for everybody," said Wilbanks, who said Feit was employed for about 2½ years at the camp for boys ages 13 to 17, until being fired weeks ago.

Kerr County Sheriff Rusty Hierholzer said a forensic interview with the camper led to the arrest of Feit Thursday on a charge of indecency with a child by sexual contact. He said there's no indication that Feit was involved with other boys.

Description from Pathways main website:

-------------- • -------------- • --------------

3H Youth Ranch

The 3H Youth Ranch uses the power of nature as a tool to build new purpose, strengthen character and personal integrity in young men.

3HA balance of wilderness living & activities coupled with classroom and vocational education creates a positive environment for boys to grow emotionally, intellectually and physically. The philosophy of the treatment program is based on basic living and socialization skills, building self-esteem and behaviors patterned after aims and ideals of Scouting.

The camp is chartered as a Boy Scout Troop and each campsite is an established Boy Scout Patrol with the boys working toward merit badges and developing skills in outdoor safety, citizenship and teamwork.

The Treatment Team is comprised of professionals that are assigned to each boy according to his specific needs. They consist of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors and licensed child care administrators.

The atmosphere is safe, structured and supervised by a highly-trained team of professionals. An individualized treatment program is designed for each boy. It promotes acceptance of authority, responsibility for personal actions and building skill sets to be successful upon return to the community.

"In my 22 years of working in the juvenile probation field, the results of this program have been the most beneficial to the type of youth served." - Lisa Edwards, Placement Coordinator, Jefferson County

Education
All boys attend school on-site provided by the University of Texas Charter School System. Upon placement, each boy is assessed and placed at his level of need. We have exceptional educators that work individually and collectively to inspire each boy to aspire to his potential.

3H has an on-site computer lab, tutorials and a study hall as a means to prepare the boys for a mainstream educational system. The boys learn vocational skills such as woodworking, welding, and opportunity to participate in local 4H programs.

High Adventure Trips
Every six weeks there is a High Adventure Trip with the boys. The destinations are as varied as Ft. Davis, South Padre Island, Palo Duro Canyon, Big Bend or many of our Texas parks and recreation areas.

Each trip involves camping with tents, cooking out and experiencing the power and challenges of meeting nature firsthand. There is hiking, back-packing, fishing, challenge courses and a multitude of wilderness activities.

Community Service
All of our boys learn citizenship skills by performing voluntary service work in the community such as the adopt a highway program, city and county park service, trail work at state and national parks and various other volunteer activities.

After reading many posts over the months on a range of topics, it is my humble opinion, that most posters, in fact most Americans suffer from the " I am the center of the universe syndrome ". The same hateful speech day after day. The only people more infected than our posters are our children. A kinder, gentler nation is not possible in the the end times. None of you mow foes don't even know this fool. He really isn't white, he's from germany and full blooded german, he had to earn his citizenship, and on my grandmama's grave he was the worst M F er ever. He would yell and scream at you with the worst attitude ever over literaly the littlest of all things. Mountain home, TX-3H pathways, just 27mi from kerrvile to junction. This place is the worst in the world, literaly I would rather give birth to a purple elephant, slurping diarrhea vomet oozing out of a wardhog's anus hole and have 7 elderly miggot leprechauns take a green glowing shis on my chest that smells like rainbow shards while my genitals play chess with each other and see my anus hole be pulled inside out, whatching it regurgitate its own fecal matter. Never in my life do I ever want to spend anymore time being there than I already had to. My last 5 weeks being there, this 14 year old little boy who almost every body wanted to beat the crap out of was always around helmut and he openly admitted to being bi-sexual. This kid looked 97% like a 9 year old and literaly had a 3 year old's voice. Never in my 11 months being there have I seen helmut be kind to a client there. I even jokingly made a $500 bet that they were "getting it on". It's kinda ironic cause I would've won that bet.

A 62-year-old Junction resident, Helmut Rudolph Feit, pleaded not guilty Monday to one count of indecency with a child by contact before the opening statements of his trial.

Feit was arrested in December 2010 after inappropriate letters were found in the victim's bag, reportedly written by the defendant. At the time, Feit was employed at Pathways 3H Youth Ranch - a therapeutic program for male foster children between 13 and 17 years old who have jeopardized probation or their Child Protective Services home placement.

Jurors heard the victim's testimony and were presented other evidence including photographs and clothing Tuesday in the second day of a trial against Helmut Feit, a former youth ranch worker on charges of indecency with a child by contact, which allegedly happened about a year ago.

The prosecution presented evidence including boy's boxer shorts, photographs of the victim and other material they said were found in Feit's home and vehicle. The victim identified two pairs of boxers found in Feit's possession as his own, but in a statement, Feit claimed the boxers belonged to his son.
