Mom Of Mummified Baby Heads To Court
By Kerry Loring, Asst. News Director

Bradford, Jessica Nicole
WHITMORE, Calif. -- The young woman accused of letting her secret baby die and then decompose for six weeks at a boarding school for troubled teens is scheduled to be in court Wednesday.
Jessica Nicole Bradford, 23, is slated to be arraigned in a Shasta County courtroom to face murder charges in the death of the 4-day old baby. She faces two counts: 1) open count of murder and 2) willful harm or injury to child or death.
Bradford was arrested Sunday at the Julian Youth Academy on Tintagel Lane outside of Whitmore, east of Redding.
KRCR News Channel 7 has learned Bradford is a current employee of the academy and lived in a dorm on the 250-acre property on Tintagel Lane. She is originally from El Cajon, a suburb of San Diego.
The Shasta County Sheriff's Office says they were initially called to the school for reports of a deceased infant Sunday evening. Upon arrival, deputies found the mummified body of a infant girl and determined Bradford, the infant's mother, was responsible in the child's death.
A lengthy interview with Bradford revealed startling details about what transpired over the past few months. The Sheriff's Office says Bradford told them she got pregnant while working at the academy and that she gave birth on or about September 19th. She told investigators she hid the pregnancy from everyone, including her boyfriend of three years. She originally told investigators the baby was stillborn, but later admitted that it lived about four days before dying.
Bradford told investigators she thought about giving the baby up for adoption, but later decided against it. She admitted to neglecting the baby by not giving it any food or breast milk. She said she kept the baby in a vacant building on campus for the first four days it was alive and would check on it periodically while she still worked, visited her boyfriend and drove to Redding at least two times over those four days.
Bradford said she didn't name the baby because she didn't want to become attached to it.
After the baby died, she kept the child hidden in her room for six weeks until a co-worker discovered it. Sheriff's logs reveal employees found the infant wrapped in blankets in a laundry basket. On Friday, when she realized someone might have seen seen the baby, she moved it to a utility closet, where it was eventually discovered by deputies two days later.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the baby was in a mummified state of decomposition. It was a fully-developed, full-term baby.
Bradford is being held on $1,000,000 bail at Shasta County jail.
The Julian Youth Academy (JYA) is Christian residential boarding school for troubled teens. According to the organization's website, JYA was founded in 1993 as a non-profit private residential school for struggling teenagers in need of full-time supervision and redirection. It accepts students ages 12-17 and has another campus in Southern California. The academy has leased a 250-acre ranch formerly known as Shepherd's Ranch and the Cascade School, east of Whitmore, since 2009.

POSTED: 11:43 am PST December 22, 2011
The young Whitmore woman accused of murdering her four-day old baby and hiding the mummified body waived her right to a preliminary hearing Thursday morning.
Twenty-three year-old Jessica Bradford chose to waive her hearing. She is scheduled to reappear in court Jan. 3 for possibly a date for a trial.
Bradford has pled not guilty to charges of murder, and child abuse.
Bradford was arrested on Nov 7, at the Julian Youth Academy in Whitmore after the body of a mummified baby was found in her laundry basket. Bradford worked at the Christian school for troubled teens. She told Shasta County Sheriff deputies she had the secret baby on September 19 under a deck at the school so no one would hear. She told deputies the baby was a stillborn, but she later admitted the baby girl lived for four days. It's a rather morbid, but important, role you play in the saga of the TTI. Do you not have a website where you list and give details of all of the kids killed in program?
