Rape victim punished with a trip to SUWS
« on: July 19, 2011, 01:51:21 AM »
Poor girl. First the rape. Then the isolation from her family. Third suffering the cold in the wilderness. She is of course smiling full time to her parents in an effort to avoid further abuse.

Alleged Rape Victim's Mom Speaks Out About Her Daughter's Treatment

"She came back our daughter again," after therapy in the wildnerness, her mother says.

By Steve Powell · July 15, 2011

The mother of an alleged 15-year-old rape victim in Enumclaw says her daughter is doing much better after going through a wilderness treatment program with a group out of Aspen, Colo., called SUWS.

"She came back our daughter again," said her mother, whom we call "Arletta" because Patch does not name rape victims or do anything to help identify one.

Samuel Shane Alvidrez, 49, is charged with two counts of third-degree rape of a child in the case. He is the owner of the Enumclaw School of Martial Arts at 1362 Cole St. Alvidrez also owns a restaurant and has a home construction remodeling business.

According to charging documents from the King County Prosecutor's Office, Alvidrez had sexual relations with a female student between March 1, 2010, and June 30, 2010, at his residence and at the martial arts studio, where he is also an instructor.

In a statement of probable cause, Enumclaw Police Lt. Eric Sortland wrote that the sexual activity between Alvidrez and his teen student continued into 2011. Alvidrez denied having any type of sexual relationship with the girl, Sortland wrote. Sortland also interviewed a potential witness who said that Alvidrez had inappropriate sexual contact with her when she was a teen between 2001 and 2002. He has not been charged in that incident.

"Other witness accounts indicate that the defendant has been inappropriate with other girls around the same age," prosecutors wrote in seeking $100,000 bail, adding that Alvidrez should not be allowed to have a position with authority over any minors.

Alvidrez's attorney, Richard Warner, did not return a phone call for comment.

Alvidrez's trial is set for Oct. 3. Arletta said the family is glad the trial is going to happen sooner rather than later.

As for the victim's treatment, the SUWS web site says that since 1981 its Adolescent and Youth Programs has specialized in helping troubled and defiant teens to overcome behavioral and emotional problems. SUWS programs help young people to identify and work through internal conflicts and emotional obstacles that have kept them from responding to parental efforts, schools and treatment. SUWS accepts boys and girls ages 11 to 17 and offers a 28-day minimum program.

"It was the best thing for her. They de-programmed her. It was intense," Arletta said. "Before she harbored so much guilt and frustration. We're Christian, and she didn't think God would forgive her."

Arletta said her daughter started going to the martial arts studio when she was 14 in 2009. She wanted to like herself more so she started competing and taking golds in competitions.

"Six months later all she could do is talk about him. Things got weird," her mom said.

Then in January of 2010, "we started to go through hell and back," she said. "All of a sudden she didn't want to be with us."

The mother said her daughter was looking for acceptance, just like many teens. "She did it and felt grown up. He whispered that she's beautiful."

After the alleged sexual abuse went on for six months, Arletta said the abuser called it off, and her daughter contemplated suicide. That's when they went to police. Arletta said her daughter wanted to go to police so that others won't become victims.

The mom said her family has no intention of leaving town. Unlike in some similar situations, she said her family has not been harassed, even though when she's told others in the martial arts studio of what happened they didn't believe her.

"This is our town, not his," she said.

Hello, I just wanted to clarify a misprint in the article dated July 15, 2011, titled “Alleged Rape Victim's Mom Speaks Out About Her Daughter's Treatment
“The article states, "After the alleged sexual abuse went on for six months, Arletta said the abuser called it off, and her daughter contemplated suicide. That’s when they went to police. Arletta said her daughter wanted to go to police so that others won’t become victims."
Fact 1; In June of 2010 Mr. Alvidrez did not stop molesting the girl after calling it off. Stay tuned for Fact 2; IT WAS NOT UNTIL MARCH 2011 that the parents found out that their daughter had been molested and went to police.

Fact 2; IT WAS NOT UNTIL MARCH 2011 that the parents found out that their daughter had been molested by Mr. Alvidrez. They had found out some very disturbing thing about him AND AFTER hearing about these other young women their daughter confessed to them what happened. Then the parents went to the Enumclaw Police. That was 10 months after he “supposedly” called it off. The daughter harbored all off this and in those 12-13 months after the abuse started, their daughter changed. She was depressed and did not feel worthy of life. THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS TO SEXUALLY ABUSED PEOPLE. Also, if you want to know more about Mr. Alvidrez, Google the word Sociopath. The first website that came up was from this address>
http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html. It fits him to a “T”![/list]

Ok last comment…Mr. Alvidrez has been doing this sort of thing in our town and has had been getting away with it for far too long. He thinks he is above the law. Why confess when he has been doing this for so long and has gotten away with it? He thinks that all the other girls he has hurt will not do anything. He thinks he has already won. Let’s prove him wrong. We need to stand up for our daughters and put him in jail where he belongs. If you or someone you know has been hurt by him, PLEASE, Contact the King County Prosecutors office. I believe the lead prosecutor is Rich Anderson. You can probably email him. The KingCounty.gov site list his email address.
The more people that come forward the better the possibility he will be put away.

I just find it awful that such people can be around. And I do not understand why the parents punished the daughter further by sending her to a wilderness program where teenagers have died in the past sharing such an experience with alcoholics and drugusers, which are normally the type of teenagers who are sent to these places. They could have given her some local therapy and achieve the same result.

Alice, Not all programs are like the ones you described. I know for a fact that her parents did a lot of research before finding the right fit for her. They found kids in Enumclaw and Buckley that had attended the camp and both parents and kids raved about it. None of those kids went for drugs/alcohol. The daughter was very thankful to go there and would recommend it to other teens going through similar problems. Does that sound like someone who was being punished? I commend her parents for finding such a wonderful place and for dipping into their savings and putting a lot of $$$$$ out there (it is not free or covered by insurance) without hesitation to help her and for sticking with her through this awful time. Some parents would just sweep this under the carpet and not do anything to help their kids. These parents are not only going the extra mile, they are taking what others ignored and let go on for too long and ending it!

I think its great that they are standing up and trying to put an end to this guys perverse ways. He ruins lots of lives with no regard. Its a shame he has gotten away with this for too long. It says in the article that he owns a restaurant, which one is it?

These kids were attending SUWS when they died: Gregory Owen Jones, age 13, died of dehydration or a fall after his group had been without water for over 9 hours in extremely hot weather. Counselors had been pushing the group to make up for lost time. Rocco Magliozzi, aged 12, died after contracting the West Nile virus while at SUWS.

Founders of SUWS have also had deaths at other of their programs, including the hanging death of a young boy who told them he was going to commit suicide.

Insurance often doesn't cover these kinds of programs for good reason. The fact that SUWS uses teen escort services should give any caring parent good pause.

Those deaths are awful! Here are the news realeases for them. Gregory Owen Jones -aged 13. On July 3 - 1985 died of dehydration. Due to heat wave in the area the first two waterholes were empty and Mr. Jones collapsed and died on the way to waterhole a third waterhole. Some news sources claim that it was a fall.[4]. According to the local sheriff the group had been without water for 9.5 hours in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees [5].
Rocco Magliozzi - aged 12 died July 2006 when he contracted the West Nile Virus. The program sent Rocco to the doctor, who cleared him to return to the desert. When he was taken to the doctor a second time, he never returned to the desert and passed away in the hospital [6]
SUWS is definatly in the wrong for not having water for those kids. Since that happened in 1985 they have come a long way in making sure every child is well hydrated and well fed. As to the West Nile virus, the hospital let the child go with a clean bill of health. How can SUWS be held accountable for that? We can get West Nile virus here in our own back yards. SUWS is often presented with kids who are in horrible shape emotionally and are faced with extreme challanges. Everyone always looks at the bad and not the good. We are all funny that way!

Of possible interest to parents considering SUWS or similar programs is the recently filed $14 million lawsuit against Mount Bachelor Academy and its parent companies Aspen Ed and CRC Health, alleging serious abuse and long term psychological damage suffered by the nine Plaintiffs.

Although not named as a Defendant per se, SUWS is mentioned a number of times in the Complaint of this lawsuit since a few of the Plaintiffs also attended this Aspen program, and consider their time there part and parcel of the abuse. Link for the (52 pp) pdf download of the Complaint:

A recent article, which gives a nice summary of the case and also details some history such as the number of deaths which have occurred in recent years in Aspen programs:
