So Spring Creek Lodge is to be re-opened as River-view?

I don't recognize these people's names - do you? Anyone?

Mickey Manning's Spring Creek Lodge heritage
« Reply #4 on: April 12, 2010, 03:08:54 AM »
I'm a slow slow bear. I rarely even think in words. I have to "practice conversation" to keep myself tuned up for potential communications with others.  :D

Perhaps some quoted material from Mickey herself would serve best ... to illustrate why this announcement set off warning bells for me.

This is from the 2005 Missoula Independent article "Spring Creek's Short Leash" (by John S. Adams)* which described 16-year old Karlye Anne Newman's suicide by hanging, amongst myriad other indignities:

Mickey Manning, Spring Creek's principal, says the school's detractors should not be believed.

"The population you are speaking to is definitely a biased group that really fervently believes what they are saying," Manning says.

Manning maintains that parents and students who left Spring Creek and today denounce its practices are in denial about the problems in their own families.

"Part of it is to protect themselves from the pain of the reality of what they've gone through," says Manning. "As far as the kids are concerned, they are going to manipulate to the hills, because that's what these kids do."

So, SCL is back up and running. Running from their past into an identical future.

      • Secret Prisons for Teens

It is not Spring Creek Academy reopened. I guess that once SCA closed, a lot of people was out of job. What could they do other than doing the only thing they knew? Locking Kids up?

So former employees of SCA seems to have opened a number of small group homes in the area. Beside RiverView Academy we found Star Peak Crossing. The therapist is a local therapist the parents pay directly and she works for a number of these group homes.

So the seminars etc. are gone. Now it is just a teenage prison and a local therapist if the parents wants to hire her. If they dont, it is just doing time.

We are looking at the sub-contractors. There are summer programs in the area, which are hired as punishment for teenagers in the programs instead of timeout rooms.

It would be a mistake to assume the seminars are not part of this - or that it isn't in many other ways typically WWASP.  They may not be using the old campus (yet) but I'd bettcha they are running this program much as any WWASP program. If they are set up in "family" homes, you have to suspect they are throwing in a dash of Straight Inc as well. Maybe Sembler and Litchfield meet over drinks at one of the Republican get togethers and worked up a new game plan.  If you can learn who is backing this; who owns the property; who is handling the marketing and so on, I feel confident you'd find many familiar names.

I was thinking the same thing. Straight was able to get away with calling itself 'outpatient' because we slept at 'host homes'. Didn't matter than were locked in a warehouse for 12 - 20 hours a day.

Mickey Manning was one of the co-founders of Star Peak. I guess she has since "moved on," as she is no longer noted as such on Star Peak's website.

Incidentally, Mike Chism, Star Peak's other co-founder, is also a former administrator from Spring Creek Lodge.

The gender is incorrectly indicated in this 'New Perspectives' piece from StrugglingTeens below, but it's the same Mickey Manning alright:

    STAR PEAK CROSSING

    Thompson Falls, MT
    Michael Chism, Director
    406-827-7477
    http://www.starpeakcrossing.com

Star Peak Crossing originally started in 2006 as a summer adventure program, expanding in 2008 to include a therapeutic residential program. This "alternative boarding school" is for teens, ages 14 to 18 years old, who struggle with negative behaviors such as: skipping school or dropping out of school, disrespect and anger, physical or verbal abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, low self esteem, social isolation or who may be disconnecting from their families.

Directors at Star Peak include Mickey Manning, who has a BA in psychology and an A in educational administration. He holds Montana and California teaching credentials (UCSB), in addition to Montana and California administration credentials (CSUN) and has 30 years experience in education as both a teacher and administrator. Michael Chism, also a Director, has 12 years experience running private programs for at risk youth, including 11 years as an administrator. Diane Morrin serves as the therapist. She has her BA in Sociology and an MA in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology. Star Peak has currently applied to NATSAP for membership.

The program at Star Peak Crossing includes a structured environment where students earn privileges and trust based on the choices they make. As trust is earned, students move up levels in the program and gain responsibility and leadership. Students are safely and structurally immersed into the local community, with students earning the privilege to attend the local high school and attend local 12 step meetings or shopping at the local stores. In addition, students participate in community service, volunteering for the local Chamber of Commerce with such events as the Huckleberry festival, local fishing derby or cleaning up the local highways. Students receive individual, group and family therapy.

Recreational activities include skiing, bowling, going to the movies or attending community sporting events. Located in the Cabinet Mountains of Montana, students also hike and explore the nearby Thompson River.

[This information came from the Star Peak Crossing website and brochure and conversation with Mike Chism.]

With safety as a cornerstone Star Peak Crossing works to having staffing numbers that are appropriate for the situation/activity at hand. In a van it may be 14 to 1, but in a hiking situation it could be 5 to 1.

The administration staff has 45 combined years of experience in working with at-risk teens both in programs and educational settings. One of the administrators has a MA and credential in Educational Administration and is currently working on a MA in clinical counseling.

From discussion topic SCL on Facebook group Stop WWASP; I think the poster who mentioned fornits had meant to say antiwwasp, since that is the thread he later came up with:

      • XXXX-1 "Pulling out of WWASP" was a joke. They still used WWASPs methods, seminars, billing address. WWASP was actually spread out across a group of LLCs to make this all difficult to piece together. WWASP itself tried to escape their own bad publicity by changing their name to Teen Revitalization.

Spring creek closed earlier this year. A new, smaller program was opened nearby but I can't remember the name right now.

        • XXXX-2 really? its closed? what became of directors?

          [/li][/list]
          • XXXX-1 Let me find the thread on fornits. They are most likely running the new program.
