Former JRC student threatens shooting at center

CANTON - A former student of the Judge Rotenberg Center allegedly called the center several times early Monday morning, and threatened to shoot a person at the center, according to police.

The suspect was given a summons to appear in Stoughton District Court.

Matthew Swart, 23, reportedly called the monitoring department, which is a 24-hour dispatch service that handles all the center's calls, starting at 2:40 a.m., police said. He threatened to shoot the person who answered the phone during several calls, according to police.

Glenda Crookes, the assistant director of the center, said Swart knew the person who answered the phone, and directed his threat to him.

 School officials did not think the caller was serious, but they reported the call as a precaution, Crookes said.

Canton Police Lt. Patricia Sherill said Swart is believed to be living in Waterbury, Conn. She said two police officers came to the center to talk with the person who was threatened.

The officers have summonsed Swart to appear at Stoughton District Court to answer charges of threatening to commit a crime, which is a misdemeanor.
