CANON CITY - Tough economic times have forced the closure of the private boarding school, Royal Gorge Academy, leaving 33 employees without jobs.

The school will close its doors today at 615 Pike Ave.

The institution for teenagers opened in March 2006 to assist youth with educational and behavioral challenges, said Jeff Kwalek, director.

The 6-acre campus, formerly the St. Scholastica Academy, had a rich history as a school. Once an all-girls Catholic boarding school, it was run for 111 years by the Benedictine Sisters before closing in June 2001.

The Royal Gorge Academy brought new life to the old campus after it sat vacant for five years.

"Several hundred students have attended the academy since it opened and some graduates are now attending colleges and universities. The academy is being closed because of financial exigency resulting from declining enrollment," Kwalek said.

"The current economic situation has made it very difficult for parents to obtain loans to enroll and maintai1n their children’s enrollment in a private boarding school.

"We sincerely thank our employees for their hard work and dedication. They have contributed significantly in assisting hundreds of young men and women attain their goals and make positive changes in their lives," Kwalek said.

A former Royal Gorge Academy director, Randall Hinton, was convicted of assault and false imprisonment of two students in August 2007 and served a 25-day jail sentence in January as part of a year of probation.
