Castle's rant on CA prop 8. I now pronounce you nothing.
« on: November 07, 2008, 03:03:15 AM »
Yup, it passed. Thanks to out-of-state influence mostly. Queers can't marry... in California. California? Wait, isn't that the faggot state? Yes.. Yes it is.

I know there are a lot of people who say "well, fuck marriage anyway. why do gays want to have to deal with the same bullshit that hetero couples do?" You know, the whole jaded, marriage-is-a-totally-fucked-up-institution-anyway, thing.

Well, you kow what? Fuck you. I'm not getting any younger ok? I want someone who is legally obligated to stick around and love me until I die... or until I piss them off enough that they have to divorce me.

You would think that I would have a better chance of being able to legally marry someone, since I'm "bi", (I prefer the term "equal opportunity") But no. I'm also trans. and since I'm trans, there is a bit of an inconsistency regarding what sex the law views me as. One thing I do know is that a marriage between a woman, and someone who was born a woman but is now a man, is still technically a same-sex marriage. However, I can also easily have my drivers license say "M" instead of "F". All I need is a note from a doctor. I can also have my birth certificate changed to say that I was born male to begin with. That, however, will not alter the law which says that a marriage between a woman and an FTM is same-sex. What it *could* do is also make it impossible for me to marry a man.

And this, my friends, is where identity politics falls flat on its face. I can't get married, because some dumbfucks in legislation and idiot voters haven't even bothered to consider how goddamn irrelevant gender is when it comes to marriage, anyway. OMG, you married someone of the same sex, so you're gay, and you married someone of the opposite sex, so you're straight. So what does this mean when I tromp into city hall with either a man or a woman in tow, and demand to be married. Am I both a dyke with a chick and a faggot with a dude? Regardless of either, it's nobody's damn business anyway. And if there was no idea or belief that there is any difference between a "gay" and "straight" marriage, or (dare I say) a "gay" and "straight" ANYTHING, I might actually be able to call someone my wife or husband.

If the voters and legislature in this country can't even come to an agreement on whether or not it's ok for certain people to marry based on their gender preference, AND WHY THIS SHOULD EVEN BE AN ISSUE OR WHY ANYONE SHOULD EVEN CARE. I have little faith that they would even be able to wrap their raisin-sized brains around what the fuck *I'm* supposed to be and whether or not I'm even allowed to betrothe something that is human.

So what's the latest on the marriages performed in SF? Are they void?

Raisin brain is right. Prop 8 is clear evidence we're barely evolved. How is this not discrimination?

Castle,
You are awesome. Seriously. I agree 100%.

There was a case in TX years back where a trans married a same sex person.  You can find the article in The Texas Observer http://www.texasobserver.org/article.php?aid=1816. It is my favorite liberal news magazine.

At least one of the folks that ultimately brought us Provo Canyon School is indirectly behind all this. One of the founders, forget which one, was involved with those experiments on gays at Brigham Young University where they tried to make them go straight by way of all sorts of coercive and inhumane means (including electric shock)... There were quite a number of suicides as a result of this sick endeavor. "The Values Institute," was it? I don't have time to go looking for it now, but the most righteous of the Mormons are very vehemently against gay marriage...

To me, the whole thing is an issue of sexism. If the state didn't truly see difference between gender, if the state truly saw and treated both sexes as equal, it would not be able to tell the difference between a same sex or different sex marriage. The fact that the distinction is made at all says a lot about how far the country has yet to come on this issue.

That msnbc video clip brought up an interesting point....  Following a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1967, mixed-race couples were permitted to marry.

shit, that was basically yesterday.

How about some affirmative action for miscegenation and what ever 'ation' it is for same sex marriages?

This is just so friggin ridiculous!!  I got into an argument with an attorney (staunch Rep./Soc. Conserv.).  My mother is his secretary and we work in the same building and I was over at their office showing her my vacation pictures.   "Sam" noticed that I had gone to Key West for Fantasy Fest (had a fucking BLAST!!!!) and started off on yet another of his rants about how gay marriage will destroy "traditional" marriage.  I had had enough.  I've known this man for 30 years and for the most part we've had fairly respectful sparring sessions about politics, but he's really off the rails about "teh gheys" and I've explained to him that I have family that is gay and very close friends that are and that I really hated how he spoke of them and to please not do so in front of me.  Whoo, runon sentence.

Anyway, for some reason it really got under my skin so I went off.  I told him that it wasn't "the gays" fault that he was so fucking insecure with his own sexuality or marriage that the fact that two guys marrying in California was going to either turn him gay or make him get a divorce.  I point blank asked him "Sam, as long as no strange men are randomly trying to stick their dicks in your ass, what the fuck do you care what they do with their own lives?"  Mom ran out of the room (she hates confrontation) and Sam didn't know what to say.  I was still seething when I got back to my office so I did a GIS for "gay porn", copy/pastaed some of the most offensive I could find and sent him an email.

Yeah, probably not the wisest or most mature response but I was pissed and I doubt he'll make those remarks in my presence anymore.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but considering who your mother is (the person who left you in program, let your dad terrorize you) her politics are not  suprising, somehow.

Anne,
Thank you for doing what you did. Living in TX, I hear that kind of shit all the time. My life is endless stickers that say "W" or "Family...". During this election I heard so much nonsense. If you try to argue with these guys they shout over you.  A person who was one of my closest friends and I really got into it. It has become a really sticky situation with him. It is as if it is nice that you are a lesbian, but the Bible says....

The Bible Belt is one tough place to exist. The East Coast was an easier existence, and I want to move back there. I have had enough of conservatives!  iamartsy
