I start my thesis in 2008.   It will center around the TBS industry, possibly using CEDU as the model. Unfortunately, it will be a quantitative analysis. (Qualitative is more fun to write.)  I don't even think there are longitudinal studies to draw from (for good reason), but I know I have to conduct interviews. It has to be a data-based study.

I may be begging for interviews in the Spring, but for right now:

1. does anyone know of any quantitative studies done for CEDU, and also, on a different topic (but one that will be addressed when discussing the psychological vs. physical abuse of the program):

2. Why didn't CEDU employ restraints as part of its methodology in breaking down kids? Other places did. Was this a moral or legal imperative?

A young woman who was in a Master's program did her thesis on Cedu/RMA in 1991-1992 while Doug was Headmaster.  He might be able to give you the citation.  Her brother had graduated from the program.

I would also try doing a dissertation search on ProQUEST using multiple databases (Dissertations & Theses; Dissertations & Theses: A&I; ProQuest Psychology Journals; Psychology Module; etc.).  My guess is you will find multiple master's level theses.

Thanks, Mad! Doug Kim Brown would make a great interview, but I am surprised you suggested him knowing my position on these programs.  He would make a GREAT voice from the other side, though!  What's his position these days (on Cedu), do you know?

God help me, there's another program up there for 18-24 year olds, Echo Springs. The swill they are dishing up on the ES web site is exactly the kind of crap her parents eat for breakfast. I fear we are never going to see my niece again. She'll become staff. She'll open her own school. She'll pour Koolaid.

I've not asked him his position on Cedu, per se, but he Heads another school (that is quite different than the Cedu program).  In the very least, however, he supports some type of "therapeutic boarding school" model.  I have no clue whether he would agree to an interview but I would be surprised if he wouldn't provide you a reference for any theses on Cedu or RMA.

If there is one thing I know about Doug is that he has no qualms lying to further his own ends or to cover his own ass. However, I am not certain how smart he is. I'd err on the side of caution and assume he is.

Did you form that opinion of Doug as an older student / as a post-grad or a combo?

I'd be interested in hearing how he earned that reputation too.

post-grad.

I spoke with an ex-staff who had bad dealings with him, and I totally trust his word, because he was one of the few cool people there who tried to snap us out of it.
