Sneaking teen gets caught in chimney

A teen who missed curfew at a Royal Oak residential program for troubled youths tried to slide down a chimney Thanksgiving night. But his Santa act got stopped in its tracks.

The 17-year-old boy became stuck and needed rescuers to get him out, police said.

He spent about an hour inside the chimney, but it took Royal Oak firefighters fewer than 10 minutes to yank him out after responding about 8:50 p.m., said Royal Oak Police Lt. David Clemens.

One of the center's staff members heard moaning from the chimney. The teen had climbed a tree to get on the roof, then slid into the chimney just far enough to be out of sight, Clemens said Friday.

"They had to use a soap solution to lubricate him a little, but they could reach down and get him," he said.

The teen suffered minor scrapes on his back but was taken to a hospital as a precaution, Clemens added. "We're just glad he's not hurt."

An employee at the Judson Center said Friday that the teen, who'd missed a 7:30 p.m. curfew, had returned from the hospital Thursday night and was doing well. The employee declined to give his name, and Judson Center managers could not be reached, but a former residential treatment director there -- Greg Everett -- said this wasn't the first time a resident had tried sneaking in from above.

"Once we had a kid climb on the roof and remove a vent. He got into the attic" but no farther, he said.
