Right.  It all boils down to Bain Capital, when all is said and done.

Thus far, I have come up with the following synopsis, admittedly flawed and incomplete:

Ashby Academy is but a small bit of flea feces in the larger picture of what happened.  One of those inconsequential casualties resultant from the impersonal machine of corporate greed.

I haven't dug as far as I can, but so far we do have the following small potato history about "attorney and financier" Michael Beavers:
*  Piedmont Behavioral Health Center, LLC in Leesburg, VA (RTC?) 1998-June, 2004;
*  Beech Hill Hospital in Durham, NH (substance abuse) 1996-2001;
*  BHH had to close due to health code violations; he corrected those and applied for re-opening as a "boarding school" in 2004, but Durham wouldn't cut him slack with the zoning irregularities as of sometime in 2005, he appealed these (outcome?);
*  Meanwhile, he bought the old Shackleton School grounds (which had gone out of business; Massachusetts) in Dec. 2005, this became Ashby Academy, which opened in Sept, 2006.
Now, remember CRC Health Group (aka CRC Health Corporation, Inc.)?  Financed by Bain Capital?  They are the ones who bought up Aspen Ed Group a year ago (September 2006).  For the last couple of years, they've also been buying up quite a lot of other "health care" termed places.  They claim they've been in existence for 20 years, but their website only carries press releases as far back as 2002.  So I can't really give you an accurate profile of their acquisitions activity.  Suffice it to say, it looks like they more than doubled in size during the available press release period.

One of the companies they bought up in December of 2003 was National Specialty Clinics, Inc., apparently based in Tennessee.  However, there was an SEC filing re. an amendment done in June 2006, and Michael Beavers is listed as President, Treasurer, and one of the Directors.  The principle office of this corporation is listed as 28 State Street, Boston, MA; that was probably just the principle office in Massachusetts.  I also found an SEC filing dated the exact same date from West Virginia.  Different branch of NSC, different key personnel listed.  National Specialty Clinics runs Methadone clinics.  They were one of the largest such operators prior to being bought up by CRC.  Now CRC is the largest.

It is my guess that Ashby just wasn't enough of a money-maker for CRC Health Corporation.  Perhaps Allen's "positive intervention model rather than a traditional point-level-privilege system" didn't go over so well with them, since the level system is what is used in all their Aspen Ed schools.

Note:  Bain Capital (headquartered in Boston, MA) bought CRC Health Group in October of 2005 for $720 million.  Yep, it all boils down to Bain Capital.

Still much to find out...
