Calories and hunger
« on: July 30, 2007, 10:19:34 PM »
Just yesterday I had my monthly party for my best class of English speakers. Every month the best behaved class that speaks the most English gets a pizza party. It cost me 20 bucks a month and it helps them to have something to work towards.

I noticed right away two things:

1) 13 year old boys eat like animals.
2) They also eat alot, far more than I managed to anyway.

So to the point of this post:

How many of you lost weight or gained weight in the programs? I seem to remember alot of the kids at 3 Springs either loosing a bunch of weight or putting on a bunch of weight. Seemed to vary from kid to kid.

At Eckerd's they tended to gain more weight. Probably because the food was about 10,000 times more edible that the crap they fed at 3 springs.

Well what say you?

well... My daughter LOST weight in Tranquility Bay and she was there for about 7.5 months..... I'm not sure how much she lost, I will ask.  I could tell by looking at her that she lost quite a bit though...

I'm sure alot of her weight loss had to do w/TB.  She says the food totally sucked there, not "American" food. I also have to factor in that she's had problems with her weight (thinking in the past that she was fat, not eating, etc) when personally, I think, her probs were the normal teenage stuff. I had the same probs growing up... just NORMAL stuff.  She has NEVER been overweight, if anything underweight or normal.  Regardless, no kid should be in any program.

Definitely no kid should be in a place like Tranquility Bay.

Interesting topic.  My daughter maintained her normal weight.  But, she did gripe about the food ... alot.  Of course, she is the world's fussiest eater. ::bangin::   The facility where she was employed trained chefs.  So by my standards the food was good ...

Many girls did drop some excess weight in her program but ...  in a lot of instances you saw weight loss because they didn't have access to fast food and junk food.  Junk food was a treat.  Kids today (Americans today) consume WAY too much garbage food.  Our waists certainly reflect this.

One of the very few benefits that my daughter got from being in her program was a new comfort with her own body.  Being removed from the 'hypersexual' high school environment gave her some time to learn to be OK with her healthy ... although not rail thin .... body type.

Yeah high school can suck like that.

I'm thinking more of wilderness programs though. Intense hiking with a questionable diet. I'm pondering an experiment of some sorts to satisfy my own curiosity.

Well, I was in a Straight copycat program, not wilderness, but... I first went down to less than 90 lbs (had been 115 and skinny when I went in) then after being starved into eating dairy, I put on a lot of weight. Probably up to 130 (most I've ever weighed except for when recently pregant). And I was soo sick. My face was horribly bloated... I looked awful. Comparing before during and long after photos is shocking. I look completely different. Healthy before, healthy now and drugged (not drugged, just looked like it), bloated and waaay out of it during. I can't look at those pictures, they make me feel ill. It's like I was a completely different person. I'm a small little hippy chick, but in there I was something else. Not alive really. Remembering is foggy, and that's for the best.

Rachel I remember you talking about your lack of access to Vegan food at that place.

Scary, and at the same time not at all surprising. At three springs very little effort was made in accommodating the dietary choices of the kids. Every now and then they would allow parents to send food for Jewish kids celebrating the fast, but that was about it.

Equipment

As we all know, the “equipment” was reused as students “graduated” so the realistic cost needs to be divided by 5 since it is likely that the lifetime of most equipment would last 5 student cycles. I am going to fetch the prices from internet searches- (why the hell not, I am bored.) Realize that these prices will actually reflect inflation, and will not take into account a bulk purchase discount that was likely a factor.

2 army surplus wool blankets $19.95 per (new) $4.00 per once you factor in the re-use. We each got 2, so $8.00
One surplus rain pancho- $18.00/5 = $3.60 per
10’ nylon chord (pack chord) 1000 ft costs 59.90, so divide by 10, you can supply 100 students, so $.59 each, divide by the 5 use factor- $.12 per
6’ Nylon strap $5.00 / 5= $1.00 per
2 1 liter water bottles $5.00 each / 5= $1.00 * 2= $2.00 per
1 non serrated kitchen knife $5.00 (we each got one new) $5.00 per
1 Russel Athletics hooded sweatshirt- $15.00 / 5= $3.00 (mine had a huge burn hole in the hood, and dried food, and dirt all over it- it was definently well used)

That does it for equipment- Total? $22.72

That leaves $15,977.28 to pay for proper medical care. But what about provisioning? Lets analyze!
Again, modern prices and portioning may vary- not to mention the bulk pricing that was inevitably taken advantage of.

Food stuffs (calculated using average serving size vs. bulk purchase of raw foods) Provisions were refreshed on a weekly basis for a “typical” 63 day program. I will also factor in the cost of a live sheep (remember they murdered that one for all to see at ”sheep kill”)- plus a grocery list of the items I remember being present at that jolly little festival. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I think this is the most scientific way to weight the calculations

Rice= 1 serving =180g 1 week=14 servings (lets pretend like we always ate twice a day) 1lb=373.2 grams 2 servings per day = 360 grams, for the sake of simplicity lets round up- per student consumption 1 lb rice per day. A 50lb bag of rice costs $50.00 at $1.00 per pound- average student cost? $63.00 (1lb of rice per day is an obtuse measurement)
Lentils= 1 serving= 90g *2 per day 180g. (lets call it 1/2 lb per day- pretend!) 50lb bag of lentils costs $24.00 or $.48 per lb- typical student consumes 32lbs*$.48= $15.36
Oatmeal= 50lb bag =$19.52 student consumption 1lb per day -63*$.39= 24.57
Germade= (cereal cream of wheat) 50lb bag = $13.77 consumption 1lb per day 63* $.28= $17.64
Brown sugar= 50lb bag $41.39 or $.83 per lb. consumption 1/8lb per day $.10*63= $6.30
Raisins= 15lb bag= 16.25= $1.08 per lb consumption ¼ lb per day total 15.75lbs*$1.08= $17.08 per
Hulled Sunflower seeds= 50lb= $62.50 /50= $1.25 per lb. 1/4lb per day= 15.75lbs consumed in 63 days= cost $19.69 per
Flour= 50lb bag = $10.05 or $.20 per lb consumption 1lb per day* 63= $12.60
Powdered milk= 50lb bag $61.24 = $1.22 per lb 1/4lb daily consumption 63/4= 15.75lbs*$1.22= $19.22 per student

Total groceries? $195.46

Lets take that from our tally
$16,000.00
-$22.72 (equipment)
-$195.46 (groceries)
$15,781.82

We have completely outfitted, and fed our camper, and we have spent just over $200 bucks.

Gotta take into account “Sheep Kill”
1 sheep= $85.00/ 4 groups of 15 campers each- so factor is $85.00/ 60= $1.42 per camper
10 boxes of stovetop stuffing= 10*$18.30= 183.00/60= $3.05 per
3* 5 gallon containers of powdered Gatorade. 1 packet yields 2.5 gallons so we need 6. Each costs $3.95= $23.70/60= $.40 per
150 potatoes- $.24 each= $36.00 / 60 = $.60 per
60lbs of rice @ $1.00 per= $60.00 / 60= $1.00per

Total for Sheepkill?- $6.47 per

Grand tally? $15,781.82- $6.47= $15,775.35

What is left? Operating costs?

Insurance: well, we know the vehicles were uninsured per the investigation, so scratch that.
Employees: The “salaries” of the higher ups is a question, but what do you think they were paying our supervisors? Not much considering their qualifications.

Thus far, our summer cost less than $300.00- seems like there is a lot of room to move there.

Oh- and just for shits and giggles, a “section” of 60 students yields $946,521.00 after the expenses I just calculated.

That is damn near a million bucks per section, with 3 sections running concurrently year round.

$$$$$$

Somebody was a little bit greedy eh?

This is from a young man who was in Challenger Program.
Although the information may be out of date, it shows what the Wilderness Programs have as far as food ect.

yeah after 2 and a half years of rice for almost every meal it gets old.  Though the rice the Koreans use is the most worthless drek ever. They refine till all the decent stuff is removed for a better appearing rice with a sweeter texture. Eating a bowl of rice in Korea is about as useful as licking up a bowl of granulated sugar.
