Does anyone have information about Hyde's current financial status, stability, financial concerns, etc.?

Chief Executive Profile

Mrs. Goubourn, Hyde Leadership's Head of School, is a 1975 graduate of the original Hyde School in Bath Maine, so she is a 30 year veteran of the Hyde process. She completed her ungraduate studies at Wellesley College in 1979 with a degree in Urban Studies,and quickly moved through the management ranks of the U.S. Postal Service. In 1988 she completed a Master's Degree in Human Reource Development at American International College in Springfield, MA and chose to return to the Hyde School in Bath, ME, as a Program Director and English Teacher. In 1993 Hyde chose Mrs. Goubourn to help found and become the Assistant Head of School at the new Hyde Leadership School in New Haven, CT, a school still in existence today. In 1998 she was again tapped to lead when she was offered and accepted the Head of School position at hte New Leadership Charter School in Springfield, MA. Under her lead the school grew from 90 students in 1998 to 250 students in 2001. Her love for and commitment to Hyde convinced her to accept her current position of Head of School position of the Hyde Leadership Public Charter School. She also began a Doctoral program at Howard University in Education Administration. Mrs. Goubourn believes deeply that American education needs what Hyde has to offer, and she plans to make this school a national model for excellence in public education.

MISSION AND PROGRAMS

Mission

Our mission is to serve as the model for the new American public school by revolutionizing the relationship between parents and schools to provide a rigorous learning environment where individuals develop character and uncover a deeper purpose in their lives.

Programs

Hyde Leadership currently serves approximately 450 students in grades K-2 and 7-11 with plans to add grades each year until we are K-12 with 1000 students. 99% of our students are African American, and the majority qualify for free or reduced lunches. Hyde Leadership is the newest addition to a family of Hyde Schools with a national reputation for preparing students for college and for LIFE by helping them do the difficult work of real character development. Although the original Hyde School in Bath, Maine, was founded as a private boarding school (and still exists as such) the families from the District of Columbia who have chosen to enroll in Hyde Leadership are receiving this nationally recognized character education/college prep program FOR FREE as we are a public charter school. The Hyde philosophy has three emphases: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. The recognition of the fact that life is difficult is the main ingredient in the process of growing up. Hyde's program is carefully designed to help adolescents and their families recognize the difficulties of life and to respond to these challenges directly and effectively. Through developing each participant's character - their courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity, and concern for others - the Hyde Leadership Public Charter School helps each person to reach for his or her best honestly, fairly, and with compassion for the needs of others. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. Good character is limited without a strong set of the skills and knowledge which are essential to finding success in the modern world. That is why Hyde offers a rigorous academic program in English, mathematics, the sciences, history/social science, geography, and foreign language to prepare students for college. Additionally, all students participate in co-curricular activities in athletics, community service, and performing arts. Participation in these activities along with rigorous academic studies all serve to develop the individual elements of character. FAMILY INVOLVEMENT. Without parental involvement and commitment, most Hyde students won't reach their fullest potential. Simply put, parents are the greatest teachers and family is the most influential classroom. To model and inspire character, each member of a Hyde student's family is asked to continually address their attitudes, values, and deeper purpose in life - just as the students are doing. To support families in this process, we have created a Family Program that helps build committed partnerships between family and school.

Hyde-DC recent highlights include: * Hyde DC has been awarded Highest Parent Satisfaction among all DC charter schools for two years successively at the Major Achievements in Charter Schools awards dinner sponsored by the DC Charter School Resource Center. * Hyde's Stanford-9 test scores ranked second out of 34 charter schools in DC. Conservative estimates show that Hyde's school-wide average increases indicate its students have gained more than half a school year of academic progress above their grade level peers. * Our junior class (our highest current grade) has the highest average Stanford-9 scores of any junior class in any charter school or non-magnet public school in D.C.. * We have a higher percentage of our junior class taking Advanced Placement courses and advanced math than any other charter school or non-magnet public school in the city: 60% are taking at least one A.P. course and 50% are taking either Algebra II or Pre-Calculus. * Our current freshman class has shown a 45% increase in their Stanford-9 reading scores and a 33% increase in their math scores in the last two years. * We have the highest rate of student participation in athletics and performing arts of any public school in the city. * Miss America 2001, Angela Perez Baraquio, selected Hyde-DC as the location for announcing her ongoing commitment to support character education and recognizing Hyde-DC as a public school fully dedicated to character education. * Former Hyde-DC Headmaster, Don MacMillan, was chosen to meet President Bush in the Oval Office as a representative of a DC public charter school and attended the President at his press conference when he announced his education reform plan last spring. * Hyde-DC has forged a partnership with The Family Academy in Harlem, NY to begin Hyde's elementary school program. Over the past 10 years The Family Academy has demonstrated an ability to teach inner city elementary school students strong reading skills and to significantly outscore similar neighborhood schools on standardized reading tests. * Mayor Anthony Williams chose Hyde as the charter school to visit on the first day of classes, September 4, 2001.

GOALS AND RESULTS

Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending 2001-12-31 00:00:00.0

  • Won Highest Parent Satisfaction among all DC charter schools for two years successively at the Major Achievements in Charter Schools awards dinner sponsored by the DC Charter School Resource Center.
  • Reduced our percentage of students on Academic Probation (failing or in danger of failing three or more classes) from 42% at the end of the first grading period two years ago to only 10% at the end of the first grading period this year. Over half of those students currently on academic probation are new students at Hyde. Currently NOT ONE of our sophomores or juniors are on academic probation. We attribute this phenomenal success to the establishment of a character culture in the school, the tireless hard work of our teachers, and the improved attitudes and work ethics of our students. Over the past two years we have, in fact, raised the level of expectations for our students, and they are responding beautifully.
  • Over the summer we doubled our enrollment, began an elementary school program, and upgraded our facilities to include a fully functioning library and state of the art computer lab.

  • Increase our parent participation from 65% to above 90% so that more students benefit from their parents' character development.
  • Develop, fully integrate, and train our teachers in a technology curriculum that will prepare our students to be savvy users of 21st century technology.
  • Provide intense academic remediation to all students currently on Academic Probabtion so that all students are moved off that list.

Self Assessment

We track our effectiveness by how many families remain enrolled at Hyde each year, how well our students are performing adacemically, (both on standardized tests and in our academic program) and on how much the "character culture" in our school improves each year.
