History
Hyde was founded in 1966 by math teacher Joseph Gauld. Mr Gauld was interested in providing education based on character development rather than academic achievement. The organization, based in Maine, also includes national parenting workshops and wilderness experiences. Outdoor activities are incorporated into the educational scheme and a Outward Bound like experience is provided to many if not all students. That is a place where well to do families can send their children who are having difficulty in other educational environments. Many students are there because their parents believe in the educational theory of character before performance.

Curriculum
Although Hyde is typically categorized as a college preparatory school, the school administrators regard their primary purpose as preparation for life. Hyde helps students learn, embrace, and adopt a character compass that will guide them for the rest of their lives. This compass has five points:

1. An explicit philosophy of character in the form of the Five Words: Courage, Integrity, Leadership, Curiosity and Concern. 2. The most dynamic student peer culture in American education; 3. A dedicated faculty that will go to the ends of the earth to help kids and families connect with their potentials; 4. The opportunity for the parents, the primary teachers, and the entire family to participate and gain individual and collective strength.

In the media
In recent years, Hyde has received national recognition. In 1993, Joseph Gauld’s experiences were published in his book Character First: The Hyde School Difference. Television shows, such as ABC’s 20/20, CBS’s 60 Minutes, and NBC’s The Today Show have aired full segments on Hyde, and the Hyde character concept has been featured in publications such as Education Week, Insight, The New York Times, USA Today, The Boston Globe, and The Wall Street Journal.

The Hyde of today continues to uphold its Five Words as the core values on its boarding campuses in Maine and in Woodstock, CT, as well as in its public school initiatives in New Haven, CT; Washington, DC; and the Bronx, NY.

     No shit!

I do believe that site was started by "Brock," but Hyde apologists keep messing with it.

See these threads for more details.  First link includes an earlier version of the Wiki article.

I especially like this little tidbit (from Surfer Mouse's cut-and-paste above):  "3. A dedicated faculty that will go to the ends of the earth to help kids and families connect with their potentials."  I think at this point we all know exactly what certain former Hyde faculty wanted to connect with, and where their "dedication" springs from!!

Maybe it is necessary to create a website with privately paid hosting
to  present information about Hyde as well as links to other pertinent
information.

This sugar-coated description of Hyde is about as believable as the Bush administration's description of what's going on in Iraq; a used car salesman's passionate sales pitch about a defective car; a criminal defense lawyer's closing argument about the remarkable virtues of his guilty-as-sin client; and a public relation firm's press release on behalf of a dying firm that's desperately trying to raise capital to stay alive.

In other words, you can put as much lipstick on a pig as is humanly possible, but it's still a pig.

Someone should turn out the lights at Hyde, close the door, and announce that the school's sad run is over.  The Gauld  mystique has run its course.

The public relations firm should hire some professional writers, or it will kill us all with bad writing instead.

This does not make sense.  If you follow a statement with a semicolon, you lead the reader into anticipating that said statement will be explained, or listed, whatever the particular case may be.  The statement "This compass has five points:" begs to have those five points enumerated.  Rather 4 points about Hyde in general are enumerated, one of which happens to be those five almighty compass points, thereby thoroughly confusing the reader...

There may be a lot of lipstick on the pig, but someone doesn't know where the lipstick is supposed to go...  I'm sure you can think of the punchline to that one, ha!
