Did'nt we start the fire after all?

Consider this....... after my program me and my friends would get in automobiles and DRIVE several miles to these buildings that housed establishments known as GAMEROOMS that were dimly lit caves and we would exchange hard earned cash paper money for barely metallic slugs known as Tokens.  We would then insert these tokens into electronic boxes for the experience of doing all sorts of make-believe things.  Among my favorites was a game where I controlled a yellow smiley face that ate pills and chased these little things that looked like McDonalds French Fry puppets which would turn into ghosts that could kill me if I let them reach the round white "base."  Years later, after finding out I took Lithium, the owner of a popular Carribean restaurant I frequented nicknamed me "Pac-Man," because I took pills with my lunch.

Another popular game was called Asteroids which I was particularly good at.  There was also Centipede, Missle Command, Space Invaders, Galaga, Defender, Ms Pac-Man, and the most wonderful of all machines........PINBALL!  If our children, nephews and neices could have seen what idiots we were and how much of our time we wasted in these places, we could never live it down.

I do however agree that Virtual Reality is creepy as hell.  I played a cutting edge first generation game that was so massive, it had to have it's own air conditioning unit to operate outdoors.  It was a part of Spring Fest at the Pier in St. Pete back when I drove the Trolley.
I won a free game (twenty dollar value) and wore this helmet thing and had to go up and down steps fighting a Knight with a virtual sword and be on the lookout for an attacking dragon.  The dragon attacked, spewing flame and the helmet actually heated up.  I was'nt ready for that one and fell back on my ass and lost a damn shoe!  They also had this motion-ride thing that was a real trip and once word got out, the stoners descended on us like locusts.  It was extremely realistic and actually made me feel dizzy, like I had gone around corners at 80 miles an hour.  Unfortunatly, I have dial-up so I cannot access the site, but I was part of the more "primitive" slideshow display of staff members along with space for comments that was an offshoot of fornits back in 2003.  The only part of the old site people thought was creepy was the constant loop recording of the theme to TWIN PEAKS that I felt was the best all around background music at the time.  Aggghh to each his own.

Inside a warehouse behind Tyrone Mall
we walked in darkness, kept hitting the wall.
I took the time to feel for the door,
I had been \"treated\" but what the hell for?

We builders of the replicas actually agree with you to a point. There are many places in SL where people are spending money for things we don;t understand, paying thousands for an "escort" around sl. Go figure.
But in a sad way that speaks to the lonelienss or perversion of some in our world not sure which. so , while we agree sl produces some absolutely useless stuff as does the real world it also provides something on a scale the interenet never has been able to . That is to allow disabled people to use their creativity either in art or in scripting and make REAL money. Money spent in the REAL world.
If one buys something in sl that money can instantly be transfered to REAL money.
However, there is another point. Over 4 million poeple from all over the world use sl. Thats alot of people that can be educated on Straight Inc.
That is alot of people that can help spread the word. That is alot of people who can write congressman for our benefit to get medical benefits.
No doubt , we did not understand the attraction to sl in the begining but after a few weeks decieded what difference does the attraction make.
The other thing is , sl is making some strides in the REAL world. Its psudo congress is showing that when you remove the lobbyist and bs they are actually able to get things done based on the same information, bills etc that the real congress has to deal with. Sorry off subject.
The thing we liked the most about sl is the real time environment for survivors to hang out. We can gather in a peaceful park and in real time plan the next protest, we can talk about our memories, we can be there for some other survivor who is having a rough day.
We believe if there is an "internet" area out there then there should be straight and behavior center information out there too.

No, I don't think you will get attacked for voicing your thoughts, seems the survivors are not in group anymore I bumped a topic for you cause I thought it was halerious.

I have to chime in here because I have been hanging in the background. I was a little afraid of being misunderstood if I posted.

I was surprised and exicited when Straight was announced in sl.
I have been in sl for six months. I at first thought ummm a waste of time, many play video games and although fun which we all need at the end of the six hours of playing you really have nothing but wasted time.
However, soon I found this WAS different. If you worked hard you actually could walk away in the REAL world with something. For instance, wait before I say that, let me say this, why would people spend 3 thousand lindens for a dress in sl (which amounts to about ten US dollars) I have no idea but they do. They spend in the millions and millions. Like the pet rock. So, I decided to try my hand at designing. I opened a shop and walaa. I waited for real money to roll in.  I found out quickly that much like the real world you can't just do it half assed and expect to make anything. My spouse is excellent at coding. So, we put in some real effort and made scripts and some cool things that people wanted. We now make fifty dollars to one hundred dollars extra money a week.
That is something NO video game could ever offer.
Also, the internet has over six billion web sites. That makes it real hard to be the one that people land on.
In SL it is in the begining of it's life , so in a way your in on the ground floor. Getting poised on the ground floor of this seems to be the right thing as far as business goes. Much like those that had html skills when yahoo first came out. As computers become powerful enough to handle it more and more will use the virtual world. For instance; many shop online now right? In sl if you go to a DELL to look for a real computer to order, you actually have live virtual helpers there that you can speak to. No more waiting for emails or endless "please press 3". It is things like that   that many believe is it popularity.
My husband actually provides security for events held in sl. Such as Concerts by popular artist, clubs and land protection for some places like "Coke". There are ways to hurt the land people have built.
So, at face value it seems pointless and yet it is becoming the next internet.
Online classes are offered by Harvard University, Microsoft has telecomute workers that get dressed and show up working at the virtual office. This saves them millions. They didnt have to build another REAL building and pay electric etc. They built a virtual one and can see there workers sign in.
Pepsi, Coke, are there too.
The Today show is there as well with a virtal plaza just like the one on TV.
It is bizarre on its face but if you go to their main website, on the left is a list of magazines articles that have been written like "Money" , "Fortune" etc. This I think help explains it.
Now, just like in the real world as the poster above stated there are some weird things or sex things where pervs hang.
As for business though it seems to be working.
For those with coding skills, you can make REAL money.
The highest skills in demand in sl is graphic artist, coders, animators.
Companys are paying REAL world nice salaries to help get them into SL. So , if you can build the virtual meeting place for the fortune 500 companies you stand to make some real money.
It is not a get money quick thing though. You have to have a skill set.
