Police: 3 pregnant teens attack home director; flee in stolen van

AMERICAN FORK, Utah - Three pregnant teens living in a group home, including one from Illinois, whacked the director in the head with a frying pan, tied her up and then fled in a stolen minivan, police said.

The director, who was tied up with power cords Tuesday, eventually broke free and called police, police Sgt. Shauna Greening said. She also freed another pregnant teen tied up in the attack, she said.

Authorities believed the teens _ two 15-year-olds and one 16-year-old _ left the state and a search was under way. Police said the teens also stole the director's purse, checkbook, credit cards, cell phone and video camera.

The motive wasn't clear. Parents of the girls, who are from Illinois, California and Texas, were notified, police said.

The New Hope home for struggling pregnant teens is in Utah County, about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City. Pregnant teens are typically sent there by parents to get away from problems with drugs or boyfriends, and they attend class and learn about prenatal care, childbirth and adoption while staying at the home, according to police.

A call by The Associated Press to a phone number listed for New Hope went unanswered Thursday.

But the owner, Spencer Moody, tearfully told a Salt Lake City TV station that he would close the rural home. He said about two dozen girls had given birth after living at New Hope.

"We've had a lot of parents call and thank us for giving their girls back," Moody told KTVX-TV.

Greening would not release the teens' hometowns or the name of the director, but said the director "never had any indication that anything like this was going to happen. They were all sitting around doing homework before the attack occurred."

They're pregnant juveniles, Aardvark. They'll probably get off easy, especially given the circumstances (torture pit). It'll all come out at trial, and that's probably why the owner closed it in advance.

The worst thing that could have happened to them was for them to stay there and have their children in that place.

And not only did their actions put this facility away, they also gave hope and inspiration to everyone else in these places.

So yes, Aardvark- Acceptable. More than acceptable. These heroines don't need to be second-guessed on the Internet.

This represents the absolute powerlessness and fear of people who feel they have no choices.  Take a kid, lock her up in a facility where she's routinely devalued, take away hope and accountability, and this is the result you get!

Ask yourself what kind of abject terror makes a young girl behave like this?  

These programs create violence in response to coercion.  This is why we see normally passive kids assaulting staff at these places: they're scared and hopeless.  

Why not whack your captor upside the head with a fry pan when you feel you've nothing left to lose???

Theyre juveniles, the didn't kill anbody, they will be alright.

We should add this strategy to the running away thread. If I remember correctly prevailing wisdom was going against taking a car.. but it seemed to work here? Frying pan to the head stealing car strategy seems effective.

So why is the owner closing the place I didn't really get that part of the story?

What do parents and staff think coercive incarceration is goign to bring? You think the kids are going to come back and thank you like regular teachers or bring apples? Yeah.. maybe apples laced with LSD so they can run while you freak out. I dont know why people are so naive.

Two reasons.

1. The details of the abusive institution will all come out at trial.

2. The other girls now know what to do. Instead of facing a facility full of pregnant traumatized young girls, they now have a facility full of traumatized young girls who will instinctively do anything to protect their babies from this, and now know exactly how to do that. Those three girls' actions galvanized everyone else. The owner can no longer keep the place open under such circumstances as he doesn't have the money to hire who'd be needed to keep them there by main force.
