Back to the Woods..
« on: March 22, 2006, 09:11:00 PM »
heh i went to SUWS in Idaho.  these places dont teach anything thats useful to a teen.  they're meant to soften them up before being placed in a TBSchool, or some schools use them as punishment if the kid doesnt submit to the program.  the only thing i got out of SUWS was learning how to start a fire with 2 sticks and how to trap mice.  oh yeah, i also had back spasms for 7 years after pulling a muscle in my lower back.  they made us carry our packs using only a one-inch wide strap for the first 3 weeks, then we 'earned' a pack frame for back support.  they didnt need bloodhounds to hunt runaway kids cuz in the last week they certified each group as a search & rescue team to do it for them.

On no, Three Springs--not a briefcase!
Please tell me it's one of those cool ones with a shoulder strap; and not a traditional one with just hand-handles!

If you post next your are considering a couple of "Hickey Freeman Suits with vests," I'm enrolling YOU in a program.

You considered wearing a wire and going to one of these places, and if you catch them blatantly abusing anyone, taking that evidence and going to the authorities?

Then if the authorities dont do anything, go to the media and ISAC  :grin:

OK Three Springs, that does it! A grown up briefcase, and now a real shirt that you ironed yourself. Take your pick: it's either a PROGRAM or a wife.  Which is it?

Tell me more about teaching and living in Korea and I'll muse over what I'd do if I were in your shoes. Here's an idea off the top of my head. Advertise to homeschoolers, historic/aid societies and such as a speaker on... teaching in Korea. Or teach English to Korean immigrants.

Three Springs: A PROGRAM it is then. If I send you to Hugh Hefner's program, you'll have to start out as a pool boy. But, you won't need that shirt with the collar, or that briefcase!

Tourist visa? You're not a US citizen? How'd that happen? Or were you born in Korea?

Anyway, you could always work at SIBS http://fornits.com/SIBS/

There you go Three Springs, just like all "programies," not wanting to give up your "old way of doing things." Of course you have to give up the briefcase!

And just why do you think you will be needing any pens and office suppies in your program, Three Springs?  Don't tell me someone has actually told you there will be any type of "learning or education" going on at a program have they? Give me that briefcase, NOW!

Texas Street Pusan really sucks.
Nong Shim Ramen anyone?

I was quite surprised to see that most places are actually paying less then what I was earning when I started with Eckerd Youth Alternatives.

Funny how inflation will kick you in the pants that way.

Still there are some great possibilities for some excellent employment as a youth counselor. Let me show you what I have found, and with that I will put my comments.

Three Rivers of Montana

Behavioral Health Program for Troubled Teens - Three Rivers Montana

Helping Your Adolescent Get Back on Track

Thinking about a boot camp or "brat camp" for your troubled teen? Three Rivers Montana may be a better alternative. The highly effective Three Rivers wilderness treatment is a catalyst for positive change. It prepares teens to transition on to boarding schools, other placements, or home.

THREE RIVERS MONTANA provides help for troubled teens. Three Rivers is an outdoor wilderness treatment program for troubled teens and their parents. The wilderness therapy at Three Rivers is powerfull help for adolescents experiencing:

    * Oppositional behaviors

    * Defiance

    * Substance abuse and addiction

    * School difficulties

    * ADD/ADHD

    * Attachment problems

    * Adoption issues

    * Low self esteem

    * Entitlement issues

    * Emotional disorders (bipolar, depression, and anxiety)

    * Self harm (cutting, eating disorders, and suicidal ideation)

    * Learning disabilities

    * Lack of motivation

    * Negative peer group

My own read on this is why in the world would you want a kid with learning disabilities stomping around out in the woods? If that is their problem why don't you send him to the library? Further, if you have a kid with bipolar, depression, and anxiety as far as I know isn't that something more suited for a clinical setting? Good lord you want to let kids who idealize suicide run around in the woods with axes and knives????? umm no thanks I will pass...

My next thought was Elk Ridge Wilderness Challenge:

Student Profile

Our eight-week intensive challenge program is designed for teens who are experiencing some of the following behavioral difficulties:

    * Poor School Performance

    * Immaturity

    * Learning Difficulties

    * Oppositional Defiant Disorder

    * Anger Outbursts

    * Poor Peer Relationships

    * Conduct Disorder

    * Impulsivity

    * Family Difficulties

    * ADD / ADHD

    * Defiance

    * Lack of Motivation

    * Alcohol or Drug Usage

    * Depression

    * Bipolar Disorder

    * Mood Difficulties

Anyone want to buy a bridge in Brooklyn? I sware its legal, and really cheap. 8 weeks of slogging through the mud to cure depression.. shit... come on give me a break. Last time I went on a 21 day trip I came back more depressed than I was when I went on the damn thing and I was a staff member.

My next selection is Suws of Carolinas:

SUWS wilderness programs excel at addressing the underlying cause of negative, unhealthy behaviors and working through impasses brought about by internal struggles, rather than confronting outward behaviors only. Common behaviors/symptoms/diagnoses that manifest negative feelings and beliefs include:

Behaviors

Angry Teen

Defiant Teen

Sad/Grieving

Teen Manipulative

Teen Failing in school

Rebellious Teen

Out-of-Control Teen

Impulsive Teen

Alcohol and/or drugs

Running away teen

Symptoms/Diagnoses

Low self-esteem

ADD/HD

Anxiety

Mood disorders

Attachment difficulties

Oh come on what teenager doesn't have some sort of mood disorder? How the hell is running around in the woods going to help your kid with failing grades? How about helping them with their damn homework on a regular basis? And kids who like to run away?? HAHAHAH I hope they have a bloodhound ready!! tards...

Screw it I had about 5 more but the more I think about it the more I ponder going into selling car insurance.

There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is
proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in
everlasting ignorance- that principle is contempt prior to investigation.
