Why were you sent to Elan ???

Elan 4 never burnt to the ground and is still standing today. The inside of the place has been vandalized with spray paint and such.I was in e-4 from late 81 until mid 82.This is not the same group as Dianne's.Her class exceeds ours in notoriety but we were close. We also had to be disbanded.E-4 when I was there had isolation cells on the third floor.

I think I remember reading about the isolation cells at survivors many years back. They were similar to what you would find in a mental hospital? Also students that did not comply were sent to them for long periods of time?

Ask Jackie from the Close the doors site.I bet she could give a more accurate description than I.I remember them being more like mental ward cells with a square hole in the door. It's hard to remember it was so long ago.The outside doors of the house had electric locks and alarms.I wonder how we were supposed to get out if there was a fire.I don't remember if there was a fire escape or not.

Jim,
During your time @ Elam, did you have to earn your pants and laces as a new resident? I did, but later that was phased out and very rarely did a shot down or even a corner person for that matter have their laces taken away.

It used to go when I first came in, I had to earn pants and laces and wear sweats for about 2 weeks. You actaully would get your pants privs after a week of being there, then the following week earn your laces.

Then when one was shotdown, he/she would automatically loose their laces and pant privs and have to wear sweats during their SD punishment.

Not long after my arrival, this was all phased out and it seemed like the rules became alot easier.

I can only imagine how bad the old school people like you, arthur, and others during that time had it bad.

Arthur used to say that we were in a water downed elan, which I can see his point, because we had alot less bullshit to go through unlike you guys did.

I was just wondering , what other hard times did your era have to go through?

I don't think laces were taken away unless you did or said something indicating you were a flight risk, and a lot of people did.Personally what I hated most about E was the constant snitching and the regular beatings.

In my time when we would get shot down our shoe laces were taken away and we had to wear shorts and a tee shrit. If we didnt have shorts they would cut our pants and make shorts,if we didnt have a tee shrit they would cut the sleevls off our shrits. I myself had my shoes taken away from me when I was shot down. My socks would get so wet and nastey. In the winter it was worst to wear that getup because It was very cold to be wearing a tee shirt and shorts in the back woods of Maine in the winter. What a bunch of ASSHOLES they were hu, what am I saying they are STILL ASSHOLES.  This is Screann, I didnt sign in.

Also the rooms on the 3rd floor of Elan 4 always had the little windows in the door, because they were class rooms at one time and those doors always had locks on them I think there was 5 class rooms at the end of the hall. One of the rooms was filled with computers that we never used. One teacher I remember Miss Libby she was nice, all the guys like her because she was so pretty. My son is in Maine right now on vac, hes gonna look for Elan and go in and tell them off. I told him I wish I was there Id do more then that.

I guess it was better at the time I was there becuase alot of things atrted to changes, better from, worse.
We were no longer required to cut our haif, we were no longer banned from wearing concert tees on the floor. Laces taken away and pants was phased out. The only thing that got worse, was the cigarette policy. It was you could get 6 pks a week. to people under 18 would only get 10 single cigs a week.
