A couple of you have alerted us to the Hyde School in Oakland and the one Hyde is attempting to open in New York City.

Hyde's own website communications report significant problems at the Oakland school: "a wildly off-track class," etc.

Apparently the New York State Education Department is now considering Hyde's attempt to open a school in NYC.  Anyone who cares to share their concerns about Hyde can write to:

Hyde Schools to Open Charter School in NYC in September '06

New York City, NY?The Hyde Urban Foundation is pleased to announce that the chancellor of New York City schools has approved its application for the Hyde Leadership Public Charter School as part of Mayor Bloomberg's plan to revitalize the city's educational system. The application has now been submitted to the New York State Department of Education for final approval.

The school plans to open in September, 2006, with 220 students in kindergarten and grade 6. The Hyde Leadership School will ultimately serve 1100 students in grades K?12.The next step in the process is to consider available school buildings to house the school, which is expected to be located in Harlem or Brooklyn.

The head of school will be Joanne Goubourn, a Hyde and Wellesley College graduate who is presently completing her doctoral degree at Howard University. Ms. Goubourn was the founding director of the Hyde Leadership School in New Haven, CT, and presently leads the Hyde Leadership School of Washington, DC, a K?12 school serving 811 students.

Hyde alumni parent Cliff van Voorhees (Brad '04 Bath) will serve as the school's chief operating officer. Mr. van Voorhees has had an extensive financial management career in London, Africa, and New York City.

The Hyde New York School is the first step in The Hyde Urban Foundation's plan to establish five Hyde charter schools over the next five years.
On August 30, the newest member of the Hyde family of schools?the West Oakland Community School (Hyde-Oakland) of Oakland, CA, opened for the school year with 34 6th graders enrolled. It will serve up to 50 students in grade 6 this year, with growth anticipated to 1100 students in grades K?12. Applications for enrollment are available, and registration remains open.

The Hyde School approach to education has been developed since 1966 at the Hyde boarding campuses in Bath, ME, and Woodstock, CT, and through public school initiatives in New Haven, CT, and Washington, DC. The organization, based in Bath, also includes national parenting workshops and wilderness programs.

The Hyde Leadership Public Charter School in Washington DC opened its doors to 240 students on August 31, 1999. Hyde-DC serves 811 students in grades K?12 and their families from throughout the District of Columbia. Hyde-New Haven enters its tenth year this fall and enrolls 225 students in grades 9?12.

As a public charter school, Hyde-Oakland is open to any students residing in Oakland, California. Families are required to participate in a family interview in which Hyde's academic and character-family programs are discussed. Families outside Oakland pay tuition to attend the school
