How is using foul language thereputic?

My son, as messed up as he was a few years ago, at least had the courtsey not to use foul language when he was around me.
Now it is all I hear. He said he was so used to it from elan, that it is hard to break.
I want to break his arm when I hear this. Can't people let their feeling out in a more appropriate manner?
Any social skills taught there? What does swearing teach???

I used to always try to get my feelings off in the slowest, quietest, most polite tone possible; explaining to the staff that it was more therapeutic  :idea: - needless to say, the staff didn't take a shining to that, and it just resulted in yelling in my direction.

I can't remember their explanation for why you had to cuss and yell; I'm sure it was more of the same...

i just recently graduated from elan and understand that your son may be using foul language. really sometimes i swear around my parents accidentally also, but you know if that's the worst that he's doing then you gotta deal with it. i mean my parents don't like the fact that i swear sometimes but theyre happy that ive changed a lot of my other behaviors

I understand completely, when my daughter came home her language was really bad and it was hard to take.  After a few arguments with her about it I began to realize that this was small in Comparison to what lead her to be placed in a TBS in the first place.  She was doing well, going to school, working and found a new group of friends.  The language still bothers me, but I Secretly smile when I see how far she has come and how happy she is.

Cynthia, I graduated Elan about 10 years ago and I still have to remind myself "how to behave like a normal person" ie. not cursing.  Elan taght this terrible habit (as well as others) and bad habits are hard to kick.  Now that I have children of my own, I am better about it because I don't want it to rub off on them.  

I don't believe it is therapeutic at all.  But neither was anything else they did there (corner, restraints, scrubbing floors, wearing signs).  

Do you ever regret sending your son to Elan?

That is strong language in some circles, but when you start talking about the ugly, evil nature of therapy today, no language is strong enough. Like "Wait a minute, whoreface! That's my money that your hired swine are stealing and using up there! That space belongs to me. That is public property, and I am part of the public. You're trespassing! You want to be vaguely careful when you start screaming about killing people. It can be a touchy subject. Never threaten to kill people in front of witnesses. Take my word for it.

From what I hear,
elan is not nearly as bad as in its earlier days. No more physical abuse. I have talked to many recent graduates. I have also talked to people my age. It seems like two different places.
Do I regret sending my son there? That is hard to answer.
I needed to get him away from our hometown, away from bad friends and bad things he was doing. He had received only 7 credits with sub-standard grades at the end of his sophmore year. I was desparate for him to LEARN and hopefully graduate.
I hired a Sp Ed Atty because I really was out of ideas.
There aren't many schools that take kids who threaten to run away.
I hate the way elan operates.
I do think he learned while he was there.(I have struggled with his education since he was 6.)
I think he may have ended up dead or in prison, had he not gone somewhere.
I am greatful that I have my son.
Regret? No.
