Who are the advertisers?
« on: July 14, 2005, 09:18:00 PM »
I don't have t.v. But if anyone could write down the ads they see when they watch the show, and post them here, that would really help! Then we could start calling in boycotts and writing to them. Thanks!

Just found out one of them is Overstock.com
[email protected]

To Whom It May Concern:

I will be boycotting your products and asking everyone I know to do the same. I am truly disappointed that your company would choose to air commercials during the show Brat Camp on ABC. This show is abusive in regards to the "treatment" methods being used on children and the fact that the children's privacy is being violated. Places such as Brat Camp have had many allegations of abuse and are highly controversial. I ask you to please consider removing any future commercials during Brat Camp.

Excellent job, Ginger!  Thanks!

How's this for the ultimate irony?

Exploiting teens/minors in a made-for-tv-wilderness-therapy-camp AND selling products aimed at adolescent consumers.  Teens DO spend a lot of money, ya know, when they AREN'T LOCKED UP or stuck in the wilderness for months.

The more I think about the creation of this show, the less surprised I am. It's a money maker.  A win-win situation for ABC and the advertisers.  The higher the ratings ... the more money ABC can charge the advertisers.

"It's the money, stupid!"

I must be a real kill-joy. I was no more surprised by this than I was by the World Trade Center attack. I remember that people got a little (really, just a little) indignant when Dr. Phil actually started shipping his guests off to PCS and, I believe, some other camps by name. But for years, daytime talk has been built on the  model of public encounter sessions. I can't watch them at all. They literally make me sick. Yes, even Montel, though I am grateful to them for taking a stab at the issue.

So maybe we've finally reached the tipping point? If so, we can be proud. It took the Germans actually being forced to look at dead bodies stacked like chord wood before they grudgingly admitted that something wasn't right.

Time will tell.

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.
-- John F. Kennedy (1917-63), U.S. Democratic politician, president. Speech, 13 March 1962, the White House.
