The Troubled Teen Industry / What's This Forum about REALLY?
« on: August 12, 2003, 07:41:00 PM »
Deborah-
Very interesting stuff.

I also seem to remember a book that had a great impact on me many years ago: "The Banality of Evil" by Hannah Arendt (sp?).  It dealt with the existence of such things as concentration camps, and how people can go about their day-to-day lives knowing such things exist.  Reduced to their essence, such behaviors become easy to tolerate and, well, boring. It explains otherwise decent folks who are irked at t.v. coverage of African famine broadcast during the dinner hour--and those who are able to listen with an uncritical ear to the words of Mr. Ken Kay.

You're joking. "...except for #5"?!
This is The Big Lie technique in action... the savage warmongering Poles invading the peaceloving Third Reich...  Yeah, it's a lie that rises almost to that level.

The Troubled Teen Industry / WWASP PR INFORMATION - Important!
« on: August 12, 2003, 01:35:00 PM »
Is it starting to occur to everyone that these ANONYMOUS  pinheads, snipers and propagandists represent the very best that WWASPS can muster in the way of a "defense"?

Viewed in that light their (his/her?) annoying repetitive program blather simply makes me smile.

The wheels of justice grind slowly, but I can hear that sound too.  It's still off in the distance-- but obviously WWASPS is worried.

"Betsy"
I can't see much point in devoting a lot of time and effort in trying to really communicate with someone who faces the world with a bag over her/his head.  And I've gotta assume that your eyes are closed under there, too, or else you have a real problem in the area of reading comprehension. (Did you "graduate" a WWASPS facility, by any chance?)
According to you, anyone who takes the position that WWASPS should be held accountable for the damage they have wreaked on thousands of families in crisis-- and all in the pursuit of $$-- qualifies as "PURE supporter extraodinare".  Not so.  Over a thousand FAMILIES, so far, have signed on to the anti-WWASPS class action.  Most of them will offer what documentation and assistance they can to those litigating the case--and move on with their lives. The vast majority do not support PURE, or anything else for that matter, because there is simply no educational entity out there worthy of support. (It's a geat yawning chasm--resembling the gap between your ears.)
In surveying the landscape, I personally don't see ANYTHING worthy of my support.  Anyone soliciting my advice on what on earth to do to re-direct an at-risk child gets no answers from me.  But as a parent of a former Casa by the Sea inmate I can and do tell them what to avoid-- based on the evil perpetrated on my family in the name of "emotional growth" and profit. And I can and do suggest questions to be asked. That's all I have right now-- lots and lots of questions.
So if you truly think that my speaking out about the harm that WWASPS inflicted on my family necessarily means I SUPPORT anyone or anything that opposes that vast moneymaking monolith-- I sincerely hope you state your case from the witness stand.  Huron will shred you like cheese.

The Troubled Teen Industry / Shutting Down Tranquility Bay - URGENT!

My husband and I would like to thank you.  I came across the PURE website around the same time and in the course of the same journey that landed us here on Fornits.  We were searching for information, and the fact that you took the time to chronicle your experience with Casa was a real eye-opener to us-- and a big help as we struggled to come to terms with the enormous evil that suddenly confronted us.  I still have a problem sometimes getting my mind around the idea that so many people are so fully committed to such evil...
Never have we had any dealings with Sue Sheff, or anyone else associated with PURE.  But I would also like to thank them for providing a forum on which you were able to post your story.  Information is power.  We all have the ability to weigh and evaluate sources of information-- and then make up our own minds as to what is or isn't credible.  Anyone who attempts to limit my access to knowledge is in a very, very real sense my enemy.
So, all you anonymii who are so quick to question the honesty, motives and sincerity of everyone who does not share your very narrow views-- how about exchanging the PAPER bag for a plastic one?  Ignore that little printed warning about suffocation-- the world will go on nicely without you.
And Lee, your Casa story so closely mirrors our own that it rang like a big brass gong!  Thank you for speaking out.
You too, Karen. I hope you realize what a difference you've made.

The Troubled Teen Industry / A Personal Request
« on: August 08, 2003, 02:53:00 PM »
Please do not pretend to agree with me-- we do not even inhabit the same planet.  Please do not attempt to speak for me-- we do not speak the same language.

The only comment I will make here is that your responses all seem to be the same-- never mind what the question was.

A paper bag over your heads would seem entirely appropriate. I'm thinking Dorian Gray here.

Carey-
The "uproar" you refer to is the sound of many, many people smacking their foreheads with their hands in despair and saying "enough already"!

Stop talking quite so much and listen.  Your stridency is forcing many to oppose you who do not voluntarily chose that path.

I find much to admire in your words and deeds.  Step back for a moment and refect.

To Spots-
I wanted you to know that you have many silent supporters who see the futility of jumping in on this particular issue. It appears to be impossible to engage Carey in rational discourse.

One of my most unshakable beliefs concerns the importance of honoring the differing opinions of people of good will.  An example would be those who see abortion as a personal exercise of a woman's right to choose-- and those who see it as murder. Both are valid issues of conscience.

But I don't think you are dealing with a person of good will here, Spots.  I see her taking your passion and your pain and using it in a pathetic attention-getting attempt.  My advice is to let it go and get on with what's important.  Carey is not important here.  Ignore her.

To Carey:
Pick up a dictionary and look up the word "personal".

The Troubled Teen Industry / The Source, the WWASP In-House Magazine
« on: July 31, 2003, 11:16:00 AM »
Yesterday we received the July issue of The Source.  It was my intention to copy and paste an article contained in it on this forum, but I was unable to get my computer to perform that function.
The article purports to be the words of a May graduate of Dundee Ranch/Carolina Springs Academy-- the 2 Narvin Litchfield properties.  I was struck by the accompanying photo of the child, head on her mom's shoulder, face devoid of expression. She is standing with her smiling parents and a younger brother. She is not smiling. She appears to be completely without affect or animation.
I will quote from the article.  Anyone interested in reading it in its entirety can go to http://www.wwasps.com, select The Source, July.  It appears on page 15 under the title "Experience...the Best Teacher."

"I have met some awesome people who I know are going to stand for my greatness and who will stand for who I am. I was able to have the experience of going to another Program for three months.  I went to Costa Rico and had many different experiences that I would not have had at CSA.
"When I left for Costa Rico, it was the day before my birthday.  I wanted to spend it with people I knew, and with my family.  However, I had a great experience on my birthday.  I was able to spend it with people I did not know.  I think that it was unique and know I may never experience anything like that again."
She goes on to discuss being on "probation" twice at Dundee-- and how that made her a "stronger" person.
I will limit myself to simply commenting that given what the world now knows about what went on at that time and that place--Dundee after Amberlee Knight left-- the fact that this child survived at all is testimony to her "strength".
But to read her words and see her face is to get punch-in-the-gut sense of what it must have cost her.
This is one article that I really believe was written by a kid.  I have no trouble imagining her speaking those words--head down, voice a dull monotone-- all the life and animation completely sucked out of her...
I was reminded of the words of British journalist Decca Aikenhead, at the close of her "Last Resort" article on Tranquility Bay: "...she looked like the saddest girl in the world."
I can't even speculate as to WWASPS' motive for printing an article of this nature. Is it supposed to SUPPORT the Program??  Maybe Anon could enlighten me.  I feel like I've stumbled into Bizarro World, where everything is reversed.  Also, maybe someone could be more successful in copying the entire (1-page) thing and posting it here?

The Troubled Teen Industry / Coldwater the Movie
« on: July 24, 2003, 12:45:00 PM »
Carey,
I have been reading your posts over the last few days with growing amazement.  I have seen you attack, and viciously I might add, not only anyone with an opinion that differs from you-- but seemingly anyone who attempts to express ANY opinion at all.
You write off a careful, well-reasoned, thoughtful observation by saying the writer sounds "like a lawyer".  This is not a bad thing when the subject under discussion is a legal issue.  And the justification for your venom directed at those who are open enough to hope for a net gain in the crusade against BM facilities as a result of a "fictional" movie dealing with the subject?  It would hurt courtroom credibility!!?  Sorry, but you can't have it both ways.  (Actually, I don't think you have made a case for it EITHER way...)
I feel sorry for you Carey.  Everything must be either black or white-nothing in between- in that tight little insulated world in which you live.
But it offends me when you attack people such as Karen and others.  It seems to me that she has made heroic effort to remove self-interest from her anti-WWASP efforts.
Lighten up with the "Ohmigod!!".
And by the way, what DID Tim Weiner have to say? My guess is you didn't reveal that because it didn't feed into your paranoid little fantasy.

The Troubled Teen Industry / Dundee Will Return
« on: July 14, 2003, 10:52:00 AM »
Hopefully Narvin Litchfield's insurance carrier has been closely following the accounts in the press of the Dundee closure.
It seems to me that he was originally quoted (widely) as saying he had a $2,000,000 investment in Dundee Ranch.  NOW he is saying that the DAMAGE alone, attributed to a "handful" of rioting kids, will cost $2,000,000 to repair.
To paraphrase Ken Kay: You may think I'm just playing dumb...or maybe I really am dumb...

FaceKhan-
Quite possibly "Narvin" is a fish. My husband, who's done quite a bit of fishing- tells me that a "Dace" is a species of minnow.
Needless to say, they're all starting to smell a lttle fishy right about now...

Anonymous-
My son was "nurtured" half crazy by a gang of poorly educated,ill-trained sadists whose ideas of "fairness, justice, integrity, honesty and TRUTH" included passing out used razors to a population of boys whose previous adventures ran the gamit of risky behaviors.  And then they either censored or trash-canned completely his e-mail home asking if you could contract HIV or other really bad diseases that way.
By the way, you can--even in the fairy land that you seem to inhabit.
Your "farming" analogy doesn't pass the smell test, Anonymous--but you certainly have a free hand with the fertilizer.
