This sounds like an old seafaring song that could've been sung by drunken pirates sitting 'round a table in the Cat's Eye Pub or maybe the Wharf Rat (historical drinking establishments on the waterfront in Fells Pt)... Must be one of the cuts from that Rogues Gallery album you were listening to...arrrr!!

Yeah, it's a real cool record.  Lotsa cool folks on it---Richard Thompson, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Rufus Wainwright, Lucinda Williams, Lou Reed, Ralph Steadman (artist for HST's books), and a bunch of others.  I think, but I'm not sure, that "Jack Shit" may be Johnny Depp, 'cause he had a hand in the making of this CD (prolly to tie in with the movies, although there is no "Pirates of the Carribean" or Disney logo on the cover).  The two song lyrics I posted definitely could have been, and probably were sung in or around the very taverns you mentioned.  I found a pretty old version of "Boney was a Warrior" on YouTube, nothing like the one on the CD I have.  Good stuff, check it out sometime.

Quote from: "Rush - Freewill"
There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance,
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.

A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
"The stars aren't aligned,
Or the gods are malign..."
Blame is better to give than receive.

Chorus
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.

There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them; they weren't born in Lotusland.

All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate.
Kicked in the face,
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate.

Chorus

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.

Chorus

To be ‘cured’ against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level with those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals. But to be punished, however severely, because we have deserved it, because we ‘ought to have known better’, is to be treated as a human person made in God’s image.

LOVE MINUS ZERO/NO LIMIT

My love she speaks like silence,
Without ideals or violence,
She doesn't have to say she's faithful,
Yet she's true, like ice, like fire.
People carry roses,
Make promises by the hours,
My love she laughs like the flowers,
Valentines can't buy her.

In the dime stores and bus stations,
People talk of situations,
Read books, repeat quotations,
Draw conclusions on the wall.
Some speak of the future,
My love she speaks softly,
She knows there's no success like failure
And that failure's no success at all.

The cloak and dagger dangles,
Madams light the candles.
In ceremonies of the horsemen,
Even the pawn must hold a grudge.
Statues made of match sticks,
Crumble into one another,
My love winks, she does not bother,
She knows too much to argue or to judge.

The bridge at midnight trembles,
The country doctor rambles,
Bankers' nieces seek perfection,
Expecting all the gifts that wise men bring.
The wind howls like a hammer,
The night blows cold and rainy,
My love she's like some raven
At my window with a broken wing.

Motorhead--"I'm So Bad Baby I Don't Care"
« Reply #589 on: March 10, 2010, 08:56:17 PM »
I make love to mountain lions,
Sleep on red-hot branding irons,
When I walk the roadway shakes,
Bed's a mess of rattlesnakes,
Voodoo child, black cat bone,
Scratch your back,hear you moan,
I get up, you go down,
Tall building, single bound,
War and peace and love,
Say it if you dare,
Iron fist,velvet glove,
I'm so bad, baby I don't care,
Black-hearted to the bone,
Older than The Rolling Stones,
Been to heaven, been to hell,
Bought the farm, and I won't sell,
Give and take, rise and fall,
Rise up and take it all,
Secret love, I won't tell,
Knock you up and ring your bell,
Kiss the whip, eat the gun,
Tell me it ain't fair,
Midnight victim, hit and run,
I'm so bad, baby I don't care,
I make the blind to see,
Shoot 'em full of R and B,
I make the lame to walk,
Come round and pop your cork,
Wham, bam,thank you ma'am,
Thought I heard the back door slam,
Overkill, walk the line,
Kill the lights, It's lampshade time,
On the road,on the lam,
People running scared,
I'm everything they say I am
I'm so bad, baby I don't care.

"Ship of Fools"
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia

    Went to see the captain
    strangest I could find
    Layed my proposition down
    Layed it on the line;
    I won't slave for beggar's pay
    likewise gold and jewels
but I would slave to learn the way
to sink your ship of fools

    Ship of fools
    on a cruel sea
    Ship of fools
    sail away from me

It was later than I thought
    when I first believed you
now I cannot share your laughter
    Ship of Fools

Saw your first ship sink and drown
    from rocking of the boat
and all that could not sink or swim
was just left there to float
I won't leave you drifting down
but woah it makes me wild
with thirty years upon my head
to have you call me child

    Ship of fools
    on a cruel sea
    Ship of fools
    sail away from me

It was later than I thought
    when I first believed you
now I cannot share your laughter
    Ship of Fools

    The bottles stand as empty
    as they were filled before
    Time there was and plenty
but from that cup no more
Though I could not caution all I yet may warn a few:
Don't lend your hand to raise no flag
    atop no ship of fools

    Ship of fools
    on a cruel sea
    Ship of fools
    sail away from me

It was later than I thought
    when I first believed you
now I cannot share your laughter
    Ship of Fools
No I cannot share your laughter
    Ship of Fools

HEY BABY (NEW RISING SUN)
--Jimi Hendrix

'Hey baby, where do you, comin' from'
Oh she looked at me and smiled,
And looked into space
And said, 'I'm comin' from the land of a new rising sun'
Then I said, 'hey, baby where you tryin' to go to'
Then she says, 'I'm gonna spin, spread around peace of mind
And a whole lotta love to you and you...'

Hey, girl I'd like to come along.
Yes, I'd love to come along.
'Would you like to come along?'
She asked me
'Yes take me along right now.'

'Hey baby, can I step into your world a while?'
'Yes you can', she said
'Come on back with me for a ride.'
We're gonna go across the Jupiter sun
And see all your people one by one
We gotta help your people out right now
That's what I'm doin' here all about

'Yeah yeah, may I come along?
May I come along?
May I come along?
Yeah yeah
Please take me'

In From the Storm (Hendrix)

WELL I,
JUST CAME BACK TODAY
I JUST CAME BACK FROM THE STORM
YEAH
I SAID A, I JUST CAME BACK BABY
I JUST CAME BACK FROM THE STORM
YEAH
FROM THE STORM

WELL I DID NOT KNOW IT THEN
BUT I WAS SUFFERIN', SUFFERIN'!
FROM THE LOVE THAT KEPT ME WARM
IT WAS SO COLD AND LONELY, YEAH
THE WIND CRYIN' THROUGH THE RAIN WAS TEARIN' ME UP
IT WAS SO COLD AND LONELY
CRYIN' THROUGH RAIN WAS TEARIN' ME UP
WOO
A TEARIN' ME UP
I WANT TO THANK YOU MY SWEAT DARLIN'
FOR DIGGIN' IN THE GRAVE, FOR DIGGIN' ME UP

IT WAS A TERRIBLE RAIN BURNIN' MY EYES
THE WIND AND LIGHTNING TOOK US BY SURPRISE
IT WAS YOU MY LOVE WHO BROUGHT ME IN
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH, I'LL NEVER STRAY FROM YOU AGAIN
HEY!

I JUST CAME BACK, TODAY
I JUST CAME BACK TODAY MY BABY ON HER WAY
YEAH YEAH YEAH
GOOD THING
GOOD THING

The Wooden Song

Take me, break me
Tell me a good one and maybe I'll cry
Go with me, show me
Tell me a good one and maybe I'll die
Lately I've been dancing in ceiling fans
Into the kitchen and out the back gate
Well I know it sounds strange but it could be the other way
Round to the ground where I know I must stay
Take me, break me
Tell me a good one and maybe I'll cry
Go with me, show me
Tell me a good one and maybe I'll die
Lately I've been dancing in ceiling fans
Circled in secrets, playing a game
Well I know it sounds strange but it could be the other way
Round to a town where they don't know your name
Together....for a while....ain't no good

Jefferson Airplane--"Mexico"

Owsley and Charlie, twins of the trade,
Come to the Poet's Room
Talking about the problems of a leaf,
And yes, it'll be back soon

There used to be tons of gold and green
Comin' up here from Mexico
A donde esta la planta, mi amigo, del sol?
[The translation is: "Where is the plant, my friend, of the sun."]

But Mexico is under the thumb
Of a man we call Richard
And he's come to call himself king
But he's a small-headed man
And he doesn't know a thing
About how to deal for you

How to deal for you
There are millions of you now
I mean it's not as if you were alone
There are brothers everywhere
Just waiting for a toke on that gold
And God knows how far it can go

You're famous Uncle Charlie
For your Mexican smoke
You're a legend Owsley
For your righteous dope

There were a half a million people on the lawn
And we sang to their faces in the dawn
How long will that young race
Wait for the jailer's time to end?
How long will the Panther race
Wait for the iron bars to bend?
And no no no no no nobody waits

SOMETHING ABOUT THE WAY YOU TASTE
MAKES ME WANT TO CLEAR MY THROAT
THERE'S A MAGIC TO YOUR MOVEMENTS
THAT REALLY GETS MY GOAT
I LOOKED FOR SILVER LININGS
BUT YOU'RE ROTTEN TO THE CORE
I'VE HAD JUST ABOUT ALL I CAN TAKE
YOU KNOW I CAN'T TAKE IT NO MORE
GOT A GUT FEELING
CENTERED 'ROUND LONG TIME AGO
ON YOUR ABILITY TO TORMENT
THEN YOU TOOK YOUR TONGS OF LOVE
AND STRIPPED AWAY MY GARMENT
GOT A GUT FEELING
GOT A GUT FEELING
SLAP YOUR MAMMY DOWN
SLAP YOUR PAPPY DOWN AGAIN
OH MOVE IT UP AND DOWN NOW
OH MOVE IT ALL AROUND NOW

Shadows are falling and I been here all day
It's too hot to sleep and time is running away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't heal
There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there

Well my sense of humanity is going down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing, there's been some kind of pain
She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind
She put down in writin' what was in her mind
I just don't see why I should even care
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there

Well I been to London and I been to gay Paris
I followed the river and I got to the sea
I've been down to the bottom of a whirlpool of lies
I ain't lookin' for nothin' in anyone's eyes
Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there

I was born here and I'll die here, against my will
I know it looks like I'm movin' but I'm standin' still
Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb
I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from
Don't even hear the murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there

I've got a song, I ain't got no melody
I'ma gonna sing it to my friends
I've got a song, I ain't got no melody
I' ma gonna sing it to my friends

Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky

I've got a story, ain't got no moral
Let the bad guy win every once in a while
I've got a story, ain't got no moral
Let the bad guy win every once in a while

Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky

I've got a dance, I ain't got no steps, no
I'm gonna let the music move me around
I've got a dance, I ain't got no steps
I'm gonna let the music move me around

Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky

[Instrumental Interlude]

Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
Will it go round in circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky

I've got a song, I ain't got no melody
I'ma gonna sing it to my friends
I've got a song, I ain't got no melody

The tiger, he looked out of his cage and smiled
He said come here boy, I want to talk to you a while
He said I once was running wild and free just the same as you
But it's one step from the jungle to the zoo

It's one step from the jungle to the zoowoowoo
You better watch out or they're gonna get you too
They clip your claws, cut your hair, make a pussy cat outta you
It's one step from the jungle to the zoo

He said son when you go runnin' through the grass
You better look out for all the hidden traps
They'll feed you sweets and goodies 'til you're too fat to move
Then it's one step from the jungle to the zoo

It's one step from the jungle to the zoowoowoo
You better watch out or they're gonna get you too
They clip your claws, yank your fangs, make a pussy cat outta you
It's one step from the jungle to the zoo

Only one step from the jungle to the zoowoowoo
You better watch out or they're gonna get you too
They clip your claws, cut your hair, make a pussy cat outta you
Its one step from the jungle to the zoo

Words & music by Paul Simon

Many's the time I've been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and I've often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but I'm all right, I'm all right
I'm just weary to my bones
Still, you don't expect to be
Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home

And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
or driven to its knees
but it's all right, it's all right
for we lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the
road we're traveling on
I wonder what's gone wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what's gone wrong

And I dreamed I was dying
I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high up above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was crying

We come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the age's most uncertain hours
and sing an American tune
Oh, and it's alright, it's all right, it's all right
You can't be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day
And I'm trying to get some rest
That's all I'm trying to get some rest
 :agree:
