I'd like to encourage each of you to encourage Gov Huntsman to sign legislation that may improve the conditions for youth seeking treatment in Utah.
The email address is:

Here's a copy of the letter I sent - please share yours....

RE:  Legislation to better regulate Utah Teen-Industry.

Dear Mr. Huntsman:

I'd like to encourage you to go forward and approve any and all legislation that may improve the conditions for teens seeking residential treatment in Utah. As you are aware there are numerous teen programs, boarding schools and boot camps in your state. There have been many reports of untherapeutic and inhmane care.  My own child, diagnosed with severe depression and post traumatic stress, was essentially tortured while she was a patient at Provo Canyon School in Orem Utah.  The brutal care she received and witnessed was in no way appropriate for her diagnosis.  As a licensed Registered Nurse and mother of five I continue to be shocked as reports of abusive care in Utah facilities surface. More must be done to protect the children who come to Utah for therapy and rehabilitation.  Many of these children have diagnosed mental illnesses, and must be protected from abusive measures.  These children have little to no contact with the outside world and are often severly punished when they attempt to disclose the abuse they experience or witness. My own child was punished with a week-long isolation and seclusiong for discussing the brutal care she was receiving in a group therapy session.  She was also punished for telling other girls to write grievances.  I continue to be dismayed that these types of programs continue to progress in Utah.  Once again, I admonish you to move forward and do all that you can to make this teen-industry safer for all involved.

Sincerely Yours,

Pass it on to all involved.

We discover in the gospels a groundwork of vulgar ignorance, of things impossible, of superstition, fanaticism and fabrication.

RE: Legislation necessary to Better Regulate Utah Teen-Industry.

To The Editor:

I'd like to encourage the governor and other law makers to move forward and approve any and all legislation to improve conditions for teens seeking residential treatment in Utah. There are numerous teen programs, boarding schools and boot camps in Utah and there have been many reports of untherapeutic and inhmane care that have been read by people throughout the nation.

My own child, diagnosed with severe depression and post traumatic stress, was essentially tortured while a patient at a prominent facility in Orem Utah.  The brutal care she received and witnessed was in no way appropriate for her diagnosis. As a licensed registered nurse, law school graduate and mother of five, I continue to be shocked as reports of abusive treatment in the Utah teen industry surface. More must be done to protect the children who come to Utah for therapy and rehabilitation. Many of these children have diagnosed mental illnesses, and must be protected by the state from abusive measures and inappropriate behavior modification. These children have little to no contact with the outside world and are often severly punished when they attempt to disclose the abuse they experience or witness. Hence they are extremely vulnerable to every type of abuse.

My own child was punished with a week-long isolation and seclusiong for discussing the brutal care she was receiving in a group therapy session. She was also punished for telling other girls to write grievances. This type of mental abuse would be considered torture and cruel and in-humane.  Yet it was done recently by a facility listed as a hospital on the utah.gov website.

I continue to be dismayed that these types of programs continue to progress and thrive in Utah.
Once again, I admonish the lawmakers and people of Utah to move forward and continue to make this teen-industry safer and more therapeutic for all involved. The entire nation is watching and waiting.

Sincerely Yours,

Leters are really imperative - if the governor and lawmakers feel that no one really gives a damn - they wont do anything.  I've heard that enormous weight is given to letters - for every letter written it is estimated that about 1000 people feel the same way.  Some pols actually weight the letters pro and con before making a decision. I urge all to write - even a few sentences will help the cause.  Sometimes the short letters get printed first.

Something like this could be used as a sample letter to cut and paste:

I'd like to urge the governor, authorities, lawmakers and people of Utah to do all that they can to make the lucrative Utah teen industry safer and more therapeutic. There have been disturbing reports of abuse, death and maltreatment of youth seeking therapy and rehabilitation in Utah.  The entire nation is watching and waiting.  Passing legislation aimed at reform is a good start!

This is a sample letter that can be modified with your own ideas or personal experience. Remember to keep the letters less than 250 words......The letter above is about 60 words.

I have always thought that all men should be free; but if any should be slaves, it should be first those who desire it for themselves, and secondly those who desire it for others.  Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.

--Abraham Lincoln

I'm sure that the employees and program parents are going to write letters - and if we don't then those letters will carry more weight.  So write and have your kids and significant others write as well.  The more the better.  Also write to the editors of the papers.....

I sent mine this weekend by e-mail and also sent letters to the editors of the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News. I'd like to encourage all to do the same - even if it's only a few sentences. These letters do make a difference.  See the link for Huntsman and the newpapers above....

March 15, 2005:

Dear My Name

Governor Huntsman received your correspondence. He asked that we respond.

Your comments and concerns have been noted by the Governor. He is grateful for the insight you have shared regarding this legislation as well as your desire to voice your opinion to public officials. It is important to notify some state legislators of your concerns as well, as they are the proper department who files legislation.

The input of concerned citizens is of great value and represents a tremendous resource to state government as a whole.

On behalf of the Governor, we'd like to thank you for writing.

Sincerely,
Governor's Office of Constituent Affairs

There's so many abusive programs in Utah - like Majestic Ranch and Provo Canyon - we really need to write these letters.
