I have a survivor who has been contacting me on the Kids of Bergen County site. She says she was in "Phoenix" in Marietta, GA in 1994 but that it used to be Straight. She very badly wants to find people she knew or that were there too. Are there any Phoenix survivors here or do they have their own forum? Anyone know? Thanks.

I've heard that The Phoenix Institute opened up in straight's building when Straight Atlanta was closed. I believe ISAAC has info about it on their site. Somebody over there could probably provide more details. I've emailed them a few times and they've been very responsive.

Is the Phoenix Institute still in operation?

Atlanta Straight closed and 11 days later in another building close by opened back up as Phoenix Institute for Adolescents.  Some of the staff and clients followed.  Phoenix eventually closed its doors and was bought out by another treatment center.  I actually went and visited this one, they seemed really good to the kids.  Totally new director and staff, no relation to the old straight ties other than just the building itself.

And they didn't have the documented 95% success rate that we had during my tenure as Clinical Director of Straight, Inc., either.  Most of those clients are now DEAD, INSANE, or IN JAIL.  That's what happens to people who don't get the type of Tough Love that we so compassionately provided at Straight!

So is there a forum for Phoenix Institute survivors or would she possibly find people on the Straight board? Would she fit in well here?

I knew some of the people who carried over to the Phoenix Institute.  My email is: neuroticbish@aol.com

I'd love to talk to her...

I was there around that time and spent 16 months there. Let me know any contact information. It's quite likely we know each other.

Happy Winter Solstice!

I can very well do without God both in my life and in my painting, but I cannot, suffering as I am, do without something which is greater than I am, which is my life, the power to create.

No. Phoenix Institute for Adolescents formed the day Atlanta Straight shut down. The building location moved a short distance and clients were accepted from the closing Straight branch in Florida. Kathleen Cone remained the administrator of the program. Supposedly, all ties to Straight incorporated were severed. Phoenix was supposed to be a kinder and gentler Straight. It achieved that goal in several ways, but at its core it was still Straight; the same program, same songs, same administration, same clientel, ect...
